Pentatonic - Minor pentatonic + blues scale (minor pentatonic with added raised 4th) and major pentatonic
That applies in Rock , Blues , Metal , Funk

Modes

Dorian is predominantly used in Funk then Rock Blues and then in some Metal.
Metal uses mostly phrygian dominant (5th mode of harmonic minor)

Blues uses Mixolydian from major scale the most since its all dominant 7 chords.
Rock uses Ionian (major scale) as well as Aeolian (natural minor scale).

This is very basic brake down - hope it helps you smile.gif

In blues it is good to use major and minor pentatonic of the same key. This will form something similar to dorian mode when combined. Also blues scale.
In rock, you can use any mode, but major and minor scales within a key are used a lot. It is best to know all the modes equally well, so you can do some nice licks on top of any chord progression.
In metal, any mode is good, but minor scale (Aeolian) and Harmonic Minor are often used in many tunes.
In funk you can use just about anything, but everything that stands for blues you can use here as well, and beyond, meaning you can insert some jazzy licks, and chromatic passages as well.

Here's a quick guide to some styles and there most common scales (these are not in order of msot commonly used scales):

Metal: Aeolian, Harmonic Minor, Phrygian Dominant, Phrygian, Blues scale/Minor Pentatonic
Rock: Blues scale/Minor Pentatonic, Mixolydian, Aeolian
Blues: Blues scale/Minor Pentatonic, Major blues scale, Dorian, Mixolydian (both of the last 2 are quite uncommon)
Celtic: Major and Minor pentatonics, Mixolydian, Dorian
Jazz: All modes+modes of melodic minor scale+chromatics+blues scale/pentatonics
Pop: Ionian, Aeolian
Neoclassical: Harmonic Minor, Phrygian Dominant
Fusion: Same as jazz though more prominantly Dorian.
Funk: Pentatonics, Minor, Mixolydian, Dorian

I just want to add that all these styles can use anything and still fit in with their style, these are just commoanly used scales i.e. I think Joe Satriani has probably used every common scale and every mode in in at least one song, but those songs still sound "rocky".

Hope this helps

You pretty much *have* to learn the 7 modes of harmonic minor and Natural minor. Eventually Melodic minor aswell, depending on your style.

The answers to the qeustion you just asked may narrow your thoughts down alot IMO.

Here's funny thing.
Per example, you can use minor pentatonic for all those styles you listed.
But it's not always just about scale and notes,
it's about expression,phrasing,notes choice etc.
The way you approach this scale will give you certain style you wanna get,
it maybe sounds a bit fuzzy for you atm but you'll realize what I'm saying in a while. smile.gif
