GMC Forum _ Competitions _ Lick Of The Day - New Competition!

Ok, guys,
Here is the first competition. Your assignment should you choose to accept it is to invent a new lick of the day, and Video it for us all to learn. You must abide by the following rules:
1. The total video must be no longer than 30 seconds (this is a guide not an absolute rule - 35 seconds will be ok, 40 seconds is too long)
2. You must play the lick once at full speed, and then again at slow speed to illustrate the technique
Judging will be by Forum Poll with the head competition moderator (me!) having casting votes if necessary.
Criteria to be considered for judging will be:
1. Coolness of lick
2. Standard of playing
3. Standard of slow illustration
4. Clarity of video
5. Quality of supporting materals (Tabs, Scales, Explanation)
There will be a separate category for people who can't record video - audio only entries will be judged against each other. The same rules will apply, but obviously the licks won't be judged on video quality!
One important point to note is that a simple lick played perfectly is more valuable than a complex lick played badly - imagine this on the front page of GMC, we want quality and simplicity not ultimate flashiness!
You have until the 23rd of February to submit your licks - there will be a separate thread just for licks - use this thread for questions and comments about the competition in general or the merits of specific entries 
Voting will start on the 23rd, winners will be announced on the last day of the month.
Since we have 2 categories, there will be 2 main prizes.
For the audio category, first prize will be:

Also, the runner up in each category will get:
In order to make these licks as high quality as possible, I strongly recommend that you supply a tab, scales and explanatory text as appropriate - in every way these licks should rival those prepared by our founder and inspiration Kris! We will make backup material part of the judging criteria.

Can one have mutiple entries?

(I took Robin and skennington as example 'cause they already posted here)
Oh, and how about the background of the vid? Does it have to be a single coloured wall?
In other words: is it a problem if there's a bed/closet/... in the background?

That's up to you - but think about how others will view it during the voting

Can I post more licks? I have few ideas and cant decide on what one to choose:D (sorry I somehow skipped that post:D thoutgh I read this thread 2 times up and down completely:D life is strange:D )
Btw. I want to record audio via mic, but video will be recorded on camera... Is there a possibility ty complete it in Cubase? Or do I have to fix sound in Cubase and then merge it in Win Movie maker?
And can I talk when showing it in slow motion? Like notes and tips on how to nail it etc..

Hi Jakub - no talking allowed, just the fast and slow demonstrations
You can record the sound separately and merge them afterwards if you like - a lot of our instructors do that for their lessons.

Not sure I follow you mate, 2 seperate catorgories, audio entry and video entry, an entry into the video catorgory isnt going to win the audio catorgory?
as there is a limit of 2 entries per person you could do a video lick and an audio lick, but they`d have to be different entries if you know what I mean (at least I assume that). Saying that, I think you need to look at the prizes too, if you dont own a webcam or want to try and win one then you`d def make an entry into the "audio catorgory", otherwise do a video to try and win the effects pedal.

By that first edit I ment, that someone posts one video and one audio lick - so he already can record video.. and he wins audiolick contest, but since he has a webcam, he will just sell it.. 
To summarize my post - you have a bigger chance to win (one of those two categories), if you send one video and one audio lick, than if you just sent two video licks.
As a solution I see, that you can send only video or only audio licks..

personally I feel, it`d be pretty poor to enter a comp to win something your gunna sell, I think this audio catorgory was opened for people unable to record a video anyways. which makes the competition fairer for all members

Sure it does, I am all in favor of that buddy! VIdeo lick section is great idea, I am just afraid, that it might be abused - thus I recommend sending your tries only as video or only as audio:)
Just my two cents I have my own experiences from these contests and people can be really cheap if bucks are in air... Which surely is not the problem of GMC'ers:) But just for being sure

I can record video , I have a digital camera but I would love to have a web cam, If I win Im going to use it, Im not going to sell it , thats why I already uploaded my video and Im going to upload an audio lick to for the competition. I hope I win in both categories.

But when participating in both categories, you would still have bigger chance to win than someone, who has the webcam already and thus sending only video's.
The bad logic, that I see is, that if you post one video lick, you have better chance to win, than if you post two videos, because of your videos, stealing your votes

Great idea for a comp.
Just a question will there be any feedback from the judges on the content and quality of the lick even if the lick don't win for future reference?
I do have a lick in mind or is it a riff, (does it matter?)....I'll have to post it and see.
It will be in audio tho cause I've no video camera , unless I do it a a series of stills and do a flick book...hey a flick lick book ...it could catch on

Jakub, thanks for your input - I guess my view is that your chances of winning are influenced more by the quality of your lick than the amount of times you enter.

I would like to compare this contest to t-shirts desing contest:)
First of all, "Lick of the day", in my opinion, is much more important for getting new members - I doubt, that i will attaract more than a few with t-shirt On the other hand, the Lick of the day is one of most important free parts of GMC - I am sure, that lots of todays members (me included ) came here day to day to check out the "Lick of the day". And one day, they told themselves... "Man... look at that HUGE lesson archive with HUGE number of licks of the day... now that would be something! ". Due to this, I would choose the more experienced to decide on quality, cleanliness and supported materials (scale, theory and some text) and to place their votes. I myself, after half a year of playing, dont feel competent to compare licks of 5 years and longer playing guitarists
Second reason is, that I believe, that instructors (and we can surely include seniors, admins etc..) can stay more objective when judging - I can imagine a situation of me, writing to my buddies here on GMC to put a few votes for my lick (I wont do it of course ) And even without sending PM's.. some members might just vote based on their personal feelings - say he doesnt like blues, there will be blues lick (better) and metal lick (worse) and he will vote for that metal, just because he doesnt like blues.
To summarize it, I am fully convinced, that Instructors, as much more experienced players, than most of us, members, can better decide quality of playing and can stay objective

I know i dont need to enter a 2 minute solo, but i gotta lick thats about 20 seconds long, well, it a repeating pattern really.

IMO i reckon everybody should have the chance to vote- but instructor feedback would be great.
And yeh man the competition is so tight, i must have recorded 50+ takes of my first entry till i was happy (still not 101%)- really have to step up your game for GMC.

I think your right, but I can live with a couple more days and there needs to be MORE entries so the weekend should give some extra time for peeps to record

I actually want to give a little extra time to get as many entries as possible.
Jakub, I thought about your points and decided to do it this way:
1. Open Poll by members for placings
2. I'll ask the instructors to critique the entries after we have the results.

So the actual results will be based on the members opinions?
Will instructors be allowed to vote in the poll?

Then that members can vote on the licks but instructors will comment and give feedback.

Hmm, I think you might want to re choose your webcam. I know reviews usually are not that reliable. But that many and I would hate to see someone have that and not be able to use it very well.
