GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ Beginner Question About Reading Tabs

I was reading a tab in Guitar World magazine today, and saw that listed underneath the tab itself it said "fingering" and under each tab note, there was a number...either 1-2-3 or 4. Does this mean which finger to fret the note with? If so, does 1 refer to your index finger or litte finger?

1 refers to the index finger.
