Here is where the magic happens: the REC board turns bedroom guitarists into real pros. Remember - it doesn't matter if you fail or pass, as long as you keep posting REC takes you will progress.

The entries will be graded by a number of instructors. After grading, members will be accredited with the appropriate points if they pass, and adjustments will be made to their REC level.
Passing grade is 6 or higher.

Original lesson: Blues - get that shuffle by Gabriel Leopardi

Okay, this isn't perfect by any stretch of the imagination but I need to try to overcome my "rec for rec syndrome", I've overcome my "rec for mentor syndrome" but this is the next level. When I played this at 80% speed, Gab said it would have been a 10 in REC Zone, I've been working really really hard trying to get it to 100% and got it pretty close, obviously this take isn't my best but I know you have to judge it for what it is. I initially learnt it using alternate/econ picking then I noticed that in the lesson Gab was using all down picking so I re-learnt it. I ain't no James Hetfield that's for sure. Any advice greatly received. It's also my first level 4 REC and it was much harder than I expected. Thanks

Hey Phil,

The feel is great - but we can hear the tempo is a tad too fast for you. It's mainly at 00:10 with an audible miss because of fast consecutive downstrokes.

To me it's clear here that you use more wrist than Gab and this prevents you from getting that machine like consistency for the faster tempos. It is a common "mistake" as you practice slower - to disregard that the picking motion needs to get smaller , more consistent and more efficient as you push speed.

You can probably get away with the wrist movement up to 80% speed but then you will hit that brick wall.

It might not be obvious when you watch Gab play, but his picking movement is very small and comes all the way from the shoulder. So he can afford to use less wrist because the other parts of his arm also assist in getting "around" the string.

If you can get this into your playing as you practice slower, you will likely experience more gradual resistance as you increase the bpm - rather than getting stuck at the last 10%.

Keep up the killer progress - it's an 8 from me.

Hey Phill!

In general it is quite pleasant take.

When we go into details, we can spot several issues. I experience problems with finishing licks, before position shifts - these notes are often fretted poorly.

There is not enough control over picking hand - when you have to pick a few notes in a row with downpicking, you tend to loos the control and precision.

Sometimes there are also pitch issues.

In the final note I wonder if it's a matter of setup or a dead note of your guitar - you can hear it almost immediately turns into harmonic, instead of ringing out.
