GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ What Am I Doing Wrong?

Posted by: Rated Htr Jul 11 2008, 11:57 AM

Am I doing the exercise right? I feel like I'm doing something wrong.

I Think I don't mute the strings, the 3rd one I believe, but even though I feel like that I have no idea how to stop it, not even after wtaching Pavel's Sweeping Basics blink.gif

I don't think you have such a bad muting problem here- more about seperating notes with the left hand.

You should practise this a little slower- as you right hand seems to want to accelerate past your left hand so maybe going a little slower will help synchronise them. Once you have them playing together then you can get some speed later with the metronome.

Thanks Deep, Will take that advice in my mind smile.gif

I had some trouble with it too. Im using firefox. Ended up right clicking and using save link as instead of just left clicking the link.

Yeah I also did that with firefox but it says "this is not a film file"...also tried to open with different players..

Watched it now as well.

I agree with DeepRoots. Practice a little slower with a lot of focus on the synchronization, as well as timing - maybe play the arpeggios with 8th notes at 80 bpm. No acceleration allowed, or change in note duration! smile.gif

Posted by: Giacinto Jul 11 2008, 02:11 PM

dude you are way too fast... always practice arps. with your metronome!
you problem is with your left hand.. try to hit every note clearly. add speed later.

cheers

One more things to add if I may. smile.gif

You are not playing note E on 12th fret on high E string while ascending,why is that?

Posted by: Rated Htr Jul 11 2008, 02:29 PM

@Video
Maybe because it's mpeg, you have to download it...Loading it for me didn't worked as well and I saw others have it in WMV so maybe that's it laugh.gif

@Muris
Hmm, Gotta review that...
I find to have problems with turning the angle of the pick when ascending, I have to lift my hand to make the angle right, don't know if I'm suppose to do that and maybe that's why I don't hit it

I see.. smile.gif

Well,when doing sweeping you shouldn't change the angle a lot,
that way you'll have no issue to switch from ascending to descending. smile.gif

Well, Check the new video to see if it's better...I was just doing what Pavel said, you gotta move your pick to your direction and than opposite direction, atleast that's what I understood laugh.gif

Direction is going down or up,ascending or descending,sweeping.
But if you change the angle of the pick too much
you might find it very difficult to execute. smile.gif

Do you think I change it to much on the second video?

Posted by: Caelumamittendum Jul 11 2008, 03:04 PM

Your arpeggio goes like this, right:

CODE
Spor 1
      E   E   E   E   E   E   E   E      E   E
E||------------------15--12----------|----------||
B||--------------13----------13------|----------||
G||----------12------------------12--|----------||
D||------14--------------------------|--14------||
A||--15------------------------------|------15--||
E||----------------------------------|----------||

That is a somewhat irregular arpeggio, concerning lead playing, I'd say. But more of the style that would be used to arpeggiate a chord with clean non-distorted playing - though of course, everything can be played!

This is actually what I thought you were attempting - which I'd say is more often seen in lead playing:

CODE
Spor 1
      S   S  S  S  S  S  S   S  S  S  S  S Q
E||------------------12-15p-12------------------|-------||
B||---------------13-----------13---------------|-------||
G||------------12-----------------12------------|-------||
D||---------14-----------------------14---------|-------||
A||--10h-15-----------------------------15------|-------||
E||---------------------------------------------|-------||

I'm watching the first video and you DO change the angle a lot,
just watch the whole descending part,you kind a twist the whole fist when going down.
Now,if you take a look at some very fast sweep players
you'll see that there is no movement like this,
first of all you don't have enough time to do that
and second,there is no need to do it.

So try to keep the same position of the fist and pick,
just like when you're doing some regular AP lick,
it'll be much easier later when you get used to it. smile.gif

A for the arpeggio you're playing,
you have a odd groping here which isn't very often,
4 notes in ascending and 5 in descending.
But if that feels comfortable for you then go for it. smile.gif
To have it more common you should just add note E and high E string 12th fret ,
then 15th fret played with upstroke,pull of to 12th and continue the sweep
with all upstrokes.

@Caelumamittendum
OMG! I didn't recall doing the pull-off loool laugh.gif

@Muris
Will try, I'll upload a new video in a second

I know I'm being exagerated but this is a technique that takes time to practise and I don't wanna start it wrong because than I can't get out of it sad.gif

Take your time on arpeggios, yeah! It's a technique that really takes some time to get clean and good-sounding.

Posted by: Rated Htr Jul 11 2008, 03:28 PM

I'm thinking of doing like...First try a maximum speed at metronome than practise for weeks like 50% of that speed, 60 % to get a clean sound but I first need to see if I'm doing it right smile.gif

Yes,always keep it clean and slowly at beginning! smile.gif

But do not loot at the time,
just do it until you get it right, my 2 cents wink.gif

Just did my take on my two examples.

The first one, the arpeggio you played, is how I imagine that being used in a chord context. You see, it's the same notes, just played an octave lower - as a regular C chord.

The second video is how I think a regular C arpeggio would be played around the 12th fret.

Third video is the picking hand for the C arpeggio.

Sorry for the bad playing and video quality - I hope this clears up some things and such.

Hmm I see...well, it does explain some parts, let me see if I can do another take (Yeah another one laugh.gif ) To see if I nail it down smile.gif

Sure, man, go ahead and record something! I'm no expert on the topic, but I'll do my best to help.

Posted by: Rated Htr Jul 11 2008, 04:15 PM

Already did, just check the first post, sorry you have to download it, will try to get wmv in the future wink.gif

Posted by: Caelumamittendum Jul 11 2008, 04:34 PM

Alright, man, I just listened. I'd say that you are getting there, however all dependent on what kind of arpeggio you want, and how you want it to sound, I think there are a few things to be corrected.

On this one now, you play the hammer on/pull offs on the top faster than the other notes. If you speed it all up by 50%, I think you'll have a difficult time playing the "top" notes on the high e-string that fast. Instead, if you play everything, including the hammer ons/pull offs, you will have a lot more even sounding arpeggio. smile.gif

Posted by: Rated Htr Jul 11 2008, 04:41 PM

Thanks man, I don't think I need to upload another one just to do the hammer on/pull off slower laugh.gif
Thanks for all the help, I guess now it's up to me to test my patience smile.gif

Posted by: Caelumamittendum Jul 11 2008, 04:44 PM

Sure, man, it was my pleasure doing this! smile.gif
I got to test my video/webcam/sound quality as well.
