4/ 4 - Simple/ Complex?

Hey guys! I often hear people complaining about the fact that 4/4 is boring and they need complicated time signatures in order to stay happy. Well, in my opinion, it's a lot more interesting and groovie to transform the 4/4 into something different by paying attention to the way you're phrasing or extracting notes from here and there in order to create tension. Yes that's true that you can accent different beats within a bar to make it sound more complex than it is.

And then there's rhythm displacement which is a whole subject on it's own................... for example the drummer can be playing 4/4 but the guitarist can be playing a riff in 7/8 that cycles over the drum beat at different points.. weird but amazingly effective. Dream Theater do it a lot smile.gif
