Posted by: Alex Feather Aug 9 2012, 05:57 PM

Hello! I am very happy you have decided to join my theory mentoring program!
I have a few questions before we will start!
-What are your goals?
-What is your weakness?
-What is your strongest point?
-Your favorite guitar players?

Theory questions (will help me to get a better idea where to start! )

- Harmonize G major scale
- Build A7 chord
- Write ii - V - I chord progression starting with Cmi7
- D mi7 - Bb - Gmi - F What key this chord progression in?

Looking forward to start working with you!

Hi!
I am really looking forward to the mentoring program!!!

-What are your goals?
improve my guitar playing. I just wanna be able to play whats in my head and express myself better on the instrument. It´s hard for me to think of the logical "next" chord when I am writing songs and creating solos is a thing of its own.

-What is your weakness?

well, I think I am bad at playing by ear and I somehow often seem to play the same licks and phrases over and over again. I know that there are modes but I never really understood them. And I think I am a sloopy player.
-What is your strongest point?

I use and mix different styles in the various band situations so that I often end up not playing the obvious thing. For instance I learn some country licks and phrases and use them in the next rock song and somehow they fit and do not sounds too country but fit into the song.
-Your favorite guitar players?

Andy Timmons, Steve Vai, Adrian Smith, and dozens of others.....

Theory questions (will help me to get a better idea where to start! )

- Harmonize G major scale

Gmajor, Aminor, Bminor, Cmajor, Dmajor, Eminor, Fis mi7, Gmajor
- Build A7 chord
A, Cis, E, Gis
- Write ii - V - I chord progression starting with Cmi7
Cmi7, Es, Bb
- D mi7 - Bb - Gmi - F What key this chord progression in?

F major
I am happy to answer more questions....

Looking forward to rhe program

Hi! I like the same players as you are! smile.gif
I did a track with Andy Timmons and Steve Vai!
Both of them are amazing players!

You have made a few mistakes:
To harmonize G major scale you made one mistake in the end on F#mi7b5
G maj7 - Ami7 - Bmi7 - Cmaj7 - D7 - Emi7 - F#half diminished or mi7b5
A7 is a dominant chord so 7 should be flat
We will have A- C# - E- G (instead of G#)
For ii - V - I chord progression we will have
Cmi7 - F7 - Bbmaj7
It is incorrect to use E# it is exist but used in very rare cases in this situation we need F otherwise you will have #IV not V
The key progression can be in two keys Bb and F
here is how to look at it:
D mi7 - Bb - Gmi - F
F major scale harmonized:
F - Gmi - Ami - Bb - C - Dmi - E dim

Bb major scale harmonized:

Bb - Cmi - Dmi - Eb - F - Gmi - Adim

You can see that the triads are the same in both keys so unless I will be using 7th chords it can be both!

Let me know if you have any questions and we will move on! smile.gif

wow, must be amazing and a memory for a lifetime to play with andy timmons ans/or steve vai!!!

I have a few questions:
the A major scale is:
A Bmin Cis D E Fis Gis A --> so why is there a G in the A7 chord? doesn´t the 7 mean that you add the 7th degree to the triad?
Is the 7th always diminished?

If so then I see why you can only see what chord progression you have when there is the 7th degree used...

very tricky.....

I think your confusion is coming from cis smile.gif
Let's start calling sharp and flat and use symbols # and b
It will make it easier for you in the future!
You are using abbreviation from classical music and there is nothing wrongs with that, but using # and b will make your life easier!
Now! A7 is V of D major scale which is
D - E- F#- G - A- B - C#

If we will build A7 chord we will get A- C#- E- G

I think you are talking about Amaj7 which is G# and if this was the case you would be absolutely correct!

Let me know if you have any questions or need help with anything!

I didn´t see that there is a difference between A7 and Amaj7 - I always thought that if there is only a letter without anything (f.i. maj or min) than it is always major...
so when do I use maj and when do I use nothing?

Another huge question is how to apply all this theory to the guitar......

It is very simple! Every time you have V(dominant) chord it will be 7
Every I and IV will be maj7

To apply it into your playing I have created a backing track!
http://soundcloud.com/alex-feather-akimov/chord-progression
The chord progression is:
Dmi - Bb - Gmi - F
I would like you to create a solo pretending it is in the key of F
You can use
D minor pentatonic
F major pentatonic
F major scale
D minor scale
Try to be as melodic as possible and let me know if you have any questions or need help with anything! smile.gif

I am on tour with a band called Red Elvises right now plus doing a few clinics in Montana

hi!

here is my first try on your chord progression.. the solo guitar is a little too loud and I just started to record after jamming for same time and there are some mistakes but I wanted to uploade a first take to hear your opinion on it.
It is plain improvisation...as I said I just noodled around and recorded with the br 80...

 ChordProg_Impro_1.mp3 ( 4.52MB ) : 279

by the way..red elvises has a great band concept!

Yu did a very nice job! The sound reminds me of Santana!
What guitar you are using?

Also good job on the solo! I would like you to:
- make it shorter like two runs through
-Let's limit the position and the scale!
Use only two D minor pentatonics
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/scalegenerator

http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/scalegenerator

When you will start playing try to build up the solo and start very simple and slow and develop it towards the end!
Question and Answer technique will work great for this type of solo!

I used an Ibanez RG560 from 1991 with the neck pickup which I changed to a Di Marzio Air Norton..

Thanx for your comments ... can´t wait to start practicing and recording my new takes...

You did a great job!!! Very melodic and smart solo!!! I like it a lot!
Now I would like you to use two shapes of G minor pentatonic

hi!
thanx!

on question:
playing the D minor shapes over the key of F is logic to me, but playing G minor - what does this mean in a music theoretical sense... G minor is the second degree of the key of F.
Is this just a way to use all the 5 shapes? or is there a deeper theoretical aspect behind? now we are coming to the theoretical stuff where I know that there is something but I cannot visualize it....

can´t wait to try the shapes and listen to the difference to the D min shapes.....

We are not in the key of F anymore! It's now Bb

G minor is VI of Bb that's why it works!

Oh, I am stupid!
of course, G min is the minor that belongs to Bb (the VI like A minor to C)

now I get it!!!
I should have known this on my own.... dry.gif

Hi!
After jamming for a few times I hit the record button to record a solo using the two boxes of the Gm pentatonic...and here is my take:

 Chord_Impro_Gm.mp3 ( 1.71MB ) : 136

I somehow found it easier to solo with the Gm than with the Dm... I think it was somehow easier to sound melodic in Gm.....

You did a great job!! I like your take! Nice melodies and nice playing!
I would suggest to have more space between phrases and also use question and answer technique!
Here is an new challenge! smile.gif

Here is the chord progression from last assignment!
Dmi - Bb - Gmi - F

I would like you to play different pentatonics over each chord!
D minor over Dmi and F

great!

I really like your tasks and I start to think about what to play about what progressions and - as a very important thing I think - try to hear different colours of scales over different chord progressions...

changing the scales during the playing will involve a lot more thinking but I look forward to trying and hearing what it sounds like...

what do you mean by joining me? do you also play a take wiht these scales and the given progression?
would be very cool!

for the solo: I didn´t think much I just jammed around and hit the record button after some time....

I think you did very well! You had some great moments and I liked your ideas a lot1
A few suggestions:
Turn down gain a little bit so your dynamic will come out!
Also try to have more space between phrases question and answer technique will work perfect for it!
Do you know what Q&A is? If not I will explain it in details!

hi!
the gain setting on this one was not intended... I had the wrong setting when I recorded and couldn´t get the distortion out if the signal (I am very, very bad when it comes to recording techniques). I am absolutely not satisfied with the sound but I didn´t get it right...
I found out was the problem was and my next recording should sound better...

Q&A means, that I play a phrase and then answer with another phrase and so on, am I right?... I have´nt used the Q&A technique in the past..don´t know why but I never really tried it, but I will try to incoorporate it into my next take....

Hi!

Had a little time and started to work on our solo right away... I tried to come up with something that maybe connects a little with what you are playing....still some mistakes but there are parts I really like. And I changed the tone on the guitar recording...

 Gm_Solo_take2mp.mp3 ( 1.37MB ) : 154

shall I record another take or do we move on to the next task?

one other thing: your solo has three notes (0:07) and one bended note (0:14) that have an absolutely amazing tone to it.... these 4 notes alone are worth listening to the solo endlessly rolleyes.gif ..... how do you get these tones? are you doing some micro bends? sliding? and how do you get the guitar tone you are playing with??

Those tones are chromatic scales! I will make a new challenge based on it so you can start practicing those scales and will explain you how to add passing tones into your playing!

To get a guitar tone I am using AXE FX II so it is a modeler
For the album recordings I use amps and mics mixed with AXE FX
What type of software do you use? I might be able to help you out!
I would like you to add a few licks into your library! ::
For the next assignment I would like to change a track!
This is a standard II - V - I progression in E
So the chords are:

Try to use at least one of them in your solo! Would be really cool to hear it! smile.gif

To get a guitar tone I am using AXE FX II so it is a modeler
For the album recordings I use amps and mics mixed with AXE FX
What type of software do you use? I might be able to help you out!

I use the Boss GT-10 and directly plug into the usb port of the my computer...
when I rehearse with my band or play live I plug the Boss GT-10 into a fender fr115 or a marshall power amplifier (only has volume knobs) and a hughs and kettner box...
but I am looking out for something to improve my sound.... not sure yet what could be a good option...I have to change something - maybe another amp will be a good solution..

right now I am on a business trip in greece mad.gif but I will start to work on the new task as soon as I return home next week.. smile.gif smile.gif

Cool you have a nice equipment already! smile.gif
Having a real amp might be problematic because of the microphones and your room
In order to get a good sound from your amp you need to crank it up and have a soundproof room so there is no echoes and any noise it will be very loud and I don't think your neighbors will appreciate it:)
The best way is to use a modular! I have heard that new line 6 POD HD it is not too expensive and you can get a lot of great sounds out of it!
Greece is cool! smile.gif What city? I have been in Greece a few years ago! I like it a lot!
Take your time and I am looking forward to continue working with you!

I was in Thessaloniki and returned ill cause of the aircondition in the hotel..outside temperature was 35 degrees!

So right now I am not able to play the guitar and practice but I hope that I will be up again tomorrow..

what amp do you use when you play live? do you go directly in to the PA with your axe II

I heard the axe ii is abslutely fantastic...but very expensive.. is that right?

hope to upload my first 15 licks solo soon...

hi!
I was just tryoing out your licks but I cannot open the guitar pro file...without the puitar pro file it is very hard to learn the licks cause the written tabs don´t show the length of the notes....
it would also help if there is a recorded version of the licks then I can hear how they sound...

thanx in advance..

by the way..great backing track!

hi!

I worked on your licks...there are some pretty cool licks there..

here is my first take.. I am not so proud of the beginning and I think it gets better after the first 30 sec. or so.

it was not so easy cause this is not the kind of music I am used to but I like jamming overthis track very much...

Sounds beautiful! Some licks were a little bit off but the whole idea is great! I would suggest using Q&A technique at the start this way your solo will build up nice and smooth! I like what you did already just a few tweaks and it will be perfect! smile.gif

here is another take... its really cool jamming over this track..

one question:

the progression is in Eminor... and you just put in some cromtic notes when you created the licks?

The chromatic trick is very simple all you have to do is fill out the gaps in between with passing tones as long as you are resolving into a chord tone it will sound good! I would suggest to play a little less in the beginning and try to develop your solo also I was missing dynamic in the beginning! This simple tricks will really help you develop a very solid solo!
I like your playing a lot just some polishing and you will do great! smile.gif

so..here´s another take...
i have very limited time to practice right now but I really try to find at least one hour every second day...

but I really tried to bring in some q&a and some dynamics...not sure if that worked...

and you just told us (in the chat) about the tonal soloing system which I am really interested in...

So do you have an idea what my next assignement will be?

Great!

I have prepared a very cool exercise for you it is based on II - V - I progression
Chords are" Emi7 - A7 - Dmaj7 this exercise includes all chord tones
By doing it you will develop your technique and will learn all chord tones that you can use over any II - V - I progression!
Also it will make your brain to think in a different direction and will give you more freedom when you are playing!
Here it is!

hi alex!

I justed wanted to tell you that due to health issues and especially due to my work agenda for the autumn month I have close to zero time for practicing. The only time I can pick up the guitar is when I try to be at the band rehearsals....

But, after christmas everything will get better and then I will start practising again and will work on the chord tone assignment....
Can´t wait to work on my playing again!!

Any news about your new job??

hi alex!

back again with a little more practicing time. feels great!!!
I started to memorize the notes of the chord tone exercise and can play them to the backing very slowely...should I go on praticing until I bring them up to some speed?
because right now I really have to concentrate while playing them-......

any news about your new job?
