I am building a desktop computer for recording and was wondering if anyone had an opinion on what operating system will work best for that application. I am so used to using windows xp that I am hesitant to make that switch based on the things I have heard about vista. Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks biggrin.gif

It is best to use XP for now. Vista is a clumsy, buggy software that still needs a lot of refinement. I would install Vista when new Windows version arrives - in a year or two.

The downside of this is that (32bit) XP can map only 3GB of RAM, so if that's about you're gonna need in the next year or two, than go for XP. If you are positive that you will be using 4GB or more RAM, then install Vista I guess.

Also if you do want Vista, take a great care to get all the components that are Vista ready, which means you have drivers for them, and they can work on Vista. A lot of hardware (and software for that matter) still cannot work with Vista so it is good to be cautious.

No reason against XP 64bit. I'm not really a 64bit XP user so I really cannot tell how it behaves. If it is as good as 32bit, than it is great I guess.

One of my friends said me once, "don't use the last software, it's full of bugs, always is better the penultimate 'cos the bugs are resolved".
So that's the reason why I keep my XP biggrin.gif

I used it , worked just fine ! You just need to make sure there are drivers available for your hardware that your are going to use (mostly recording hardware)..

I have vista and it is far from great. My computer crashed completely a few months back and the only choice I had was a Vista computer unfortunately. I was considering to switch to linux but a lot of software doesn't work on Linux. so...

These days you will pay too much money for a macintosh because Apple has a big name now : /

If you want to be safe I highly suggest you take XP. Vista will become a lot better the upcoming months though, I hope.

My main computer at home is still running XP, this is where I normally work with Pro Tools, and it is a very stable and reliable setup. On my laptop I am using Vista, and I have to say that so far (I switched to that laptop about a year ago) I never had any problems with Vista. I have a Pro tools setup on that laptop too and it is working perfectly fine, so I don't see any problems switching to Vista. YOu have to make sure though that all the software and hardware that you want to use is compatible with Vista, without proper drivers it would turn into a nightmare for sure. And you also have to be aware of the fact that Vista needs more resources compared to XP, so the same computer will work a bit faster with XP compared to Vista.

I consider myself an experienced Windows user, and - since service pack 1 - Vista is rock stable.
Haven't been able to crash it yet. smile.gif

Without the service pack it's a complete waste of effort. laugh.gif

I wouldn't hesitate to get Vista, especially since they are not keeping XP warm for much longer.

Now - the real choice is between a Mac and a PC.
I mean, they tried really hard to match Mac OS, but failed.
Vista as an OS is far behind.
But definately a worthwhile XP upgrade.
IMO. wink.gif

I have to agree with jacmoe about Vista beeing much, much, much... MUCH more stable after SP1. But I'm still concidering to "upgrade" to XP again, just because Vista use to much resources, in my opinion wink.gif

The next computer I'll buy will be a Mac though tongue.gif

I like more XP and there are a lot of hardware driver isues with vista. Vista just use to many resourses just to run. Being the case trhat everything works just fine I'll strick with XP until it becomes obsolete.

You argue this point very well sir laugh.gif

I've avoided vista so far-because of all the advice from this forum in particular I'm still on xp. I'm thinking about switching to 64 bit for when i switch pc though- as it will be a real power-house of a pc biggrin.gif

My machine is built to run Vista, and it does.
I find it snappier than XP which came preinstalled with it.
Got Vista as a so-called Vista express upgrade.
Went back to XP, but returned after Vista SP1.
My machine is faster and feels more responsive now, running Vista as opposed to XP.
That's a fact.
Same hardware, same me.

I am not religious about it. laugh.gif

I am fond of Linux, but I just have to accept that the software I use the most is not written for any other OS than Windows. dry.gif

I'm sticking with XP. Whenever i use Vista it feels sort of like driving a Ferrari with a Scooter engine. It looks good, but it just doesnt perform as it should. Atleast not with the software i usually use the most.

I have two computers, one with XP the other with Vista. In the late there has been a few updates for Vista and I have found that it is now running as stable as XP. Also the update directly targeted the sluggishness and now my Vista computer, while being nearly the same computer, out performs the XP. Initially I hated Vista but now I love it.

new machine - go with latest (I refuse to speak actual Evilsoft names as my tongue may turn to fire should I do so)

existing machine - stick with what you have unless you have some serious reason to "upgrade", whatever that could be escapes me.
