what do you think? smile.gif

Posted by: Adrian Figallo Apr 22 2010, 11:17 PM

i dont think they rehearse that much, liked a lot randy and steve, and LOVED travis as usual, but, i think the guys told him to really play flashy "in the travis barker style", i know that guy can keep some amazing grooves too.

on the other side i'm not diggin orianthi lately, TOO MUCH media on her side you know..., she's good but come on, can think on at least 20 guitar players that can fit better there

edit: second watch, i love the vai solo, old school smile.gif

I didn't like it at all.

I liked the cover! I really love this song and this version sounds very interesting! I like the drummers groove, simple yet powerful! smile.gif

That makes two of us sir sad.gif

But I usually dislike most LZ covers to be honest.

I've watched a lot of of Orianthi stuff and I hate to sound sexist but I really feel that if she wasn't woman that she would be just another guitar player......and an average one at that. I don't get what all the hype is about her......oh yeah.....she's a woman. wink.gif

You have Steve Vai on the stage and you don't even let the dude play a solo.......that is a CRIME!!!! mad.gif mad.gif

Def. a little awkward, obviously not rehearsed!

I didn't like the altered arrangement of the song.... and too much focus on the singer.

I would have to say I give it a thumbs down tongue.gif

Check out the live cd that made Mike Portnoy, Paul Gilbert and Daniel Gildenlow playin' Zepp' songs. It's truly amazing

Now that sounds like an extraordinarie line-up!
Well, I expected a 4-minute Vai solo at the end, since the video last 9 minutes, but they stripped the songs to 4 minutes alltogether...I also don't like female singers like Mary J and all of that kind, too much whining and long notes in their singing for my taste. Sorry, I expected better.
We will hear the original song quite often in the next weeks in Germany, as there is a huge group of people who will buy Led Zep's classic to make it number one in the charts, thus avoiding the new "german idol" single to become number one. Yep, that idea was stolen from Great Britain...

I'm with the naysayers on this one too..

Everything about it was OK, not great.

Does anyone else think that Mary J Blige look like her wardrobe is straight out of Gene Simmons closet? LOL!

I admit I am not a fan of Mary J Blige and the whole sunglasses inside an already low light setting kills me everytime. I agree with others when they say if it had been rehearsed some more, and there was a different singer, this may have been better.

I'm also with Adrian on Travis Barker, he's awesome and can most definitely hold a groove! He has some serious drummin' skills.

oh yeah, that DVD with Paul Gilbert and Portnoy is really good, and funny

It's all good, good cause, and nice cover. It's not original, but hey it's not meant to be. It's a good collaboration, who ever participated, doesn't matter who is in who's not, as long as it sounds OK and it's for the good cause IMHO. I think all artists on stage deserve respect, and they can all do this song very well, so an all-start like this is a positive thing smile.gif

Have to agree about the media, they're working hard not to waste the opportunity on her behalf. As for her playing, she's mostly "just a little fast" and not terribly interesting. In fairness to her, usually she sounds WAY better than she did on the idol stage. I dunno what happened exactly but her tone was terrible at that show, we watched it in HD here on a nice sound system and I could barely hear her over the rest of the band.

P.S. Vai did get a little solo time in there, unless I misunderstood what I was hearing, it sure seemed to be his fingers playing what I was hearing though.

There is a nice 10 minute film about the "making of" for the studio version of this collab on Steve Vai's website. It is entertaining in it's own right and gives some background on why this song was chosen. I don't like Orianthi's tone on that one either, and I'll join the crowd in saying I am not impressed with her in general. I guess there is still a premium on "oh look, that supermodel can play a guitar!"

But in the Vai video, MJB's performance is much more polished and nice.

Posted by: Santiago Diaz Garces Apr 27 2010, 06:34 AM

But it's always great to see a hot chick playing guitar. Hahaha

/yawn

Poor Vai that has to be on Idol in the first place...

IMO they ruined one of the best rock anthems ever.
