Sometimes, having a nice rhythmic line in a solo is better than just play 21309824509843095835 notes per second. And this is a very good example of that. Great video!!. Thanks to share. Do you know Bireli Lagrene?. He owns the rhythm too

Sound (5) Sounds just like the original! biggrin.gif

Is this something like jazz shred? It seems hillariously difficult to me

I didn't like it too much to be honest with you guys.
This is standard rhythm changes chord progression and John wasn't really describing changes but rather riffing trough the solo. The best part of the whole solo was chord stabs, for me at least...

Are you talking about lessons? That's some other guy showing his song. I saw John Pizzarelli with Tommy Emmanuel and some other people. The guy is a guitar beast but I do agree that these changes were not that much complicated. I think they still sound good and looks like a hard task to do this type of groove without any mistake or a wrong note.

Check this one out smile.gif I was really impressed

I was referring to original video he was playing in. This chord progression defines Jazz from Blues music. Its I VI II V with modulation to IV chord then IV minor back to turnaround into the I. B section has series of dominant 7th chords (extended dominant 7th patterns) and finally they bring it back to I. AABA form , rhythm changes. Every jazz musician plays this.

What I didn't like in the whole solo was there were rarely any guide tones in his soloing. Harmony is beautiful for rhythm changes and he was playing it like he was doing blues soloing. That could work for a chorus but not more in my opinion. Thats why I didn't like it.

2nd video is OK, I liked piano players jazz lines way more by the way!!!

I will post some video pretty soon for you guys...

This is something that perfectly describes what I was saying above!!!

Double time, riffing, guide tone soloing, jazz lines, chromatic approach, diatonic approach, linear playing...

Just awesome !!!

Here is another one !
Sony Stitt solo played by guitar player. Again Rhythm Changes and again awesome soloing.

One more OLEO rhythm changes.

I know man what you're saying smile.gif But this music is not for musicians and analisys. It's quite commercial type of jazz and swingy feel. This is for us to enjoy, for people that like cool music. That's how I see it at least. I didn't care if he went back to the root through extended and altered chords or through normal triads smile.gif I was just saying that I liked the music.

I know what you mean but my trained ear can't enjoy riffing blues type soloing over rhythm changes for couple of minutes. I want to hear alterations and cool approach patterns, thats what gets me going at least wink.gif

I think in many ways that being a guitar player keeps us from enjoying music like we should. I am always analyzing the players chops, or the chord changes etc. We need to remember that most music is meant for people who know NOTHING about music other than they like it or they don't. How else could Britney Spears sell TONS of records yet most people don't know who Steve Vai, Joe Satriani or a host of other musical geniuses are. smile.gif

Its not only for guitar players, its for all musicians that develop their ear. You simply start to enjoy more things in music not just ones that are on surface. Music like Britney Spears makes is for billions of people with predesignated formula. Most of the songs are same, have same arranging tricks, catchy chorus , very diatonic and repetitive etc
That doesn't hold my attention, I need to hear Coltrane Parker Brecker and these other guys take me to Jazz land smile.gif

I can enjoy anything that has quality. I can't say that John Pizzarelli is not a good player. I like his playing because it does catch my attention and I guess that's because he is good. Of course there are better ones but saying that he is not good because his solo was bluesy over some good jazz progression is not my oppinion. Bluesy solo over jazz chords can be quite attractive as well.
