Hello all:

I was with GMC way back when (I think 2006 - looks like my member number is 901) up until a few years ago when the prices went up quite a bit and I got busy with other things, and tried a few other learning programs.

I am looking to get back going but was wondering if there is a tutorial or a post for new members to help maximize my new experience with all the different features, such as video chat, mentoring(When I left the mentoring program was just getting going), and collaborations. To be quite honest, my first time around I felt overwhelmed by all the options and couldn't keep it all organized so I didn't use it much (had too many videos bookmarked- deer in headlights syndrome).

I don't have a lot of time (run my own insurance business), am probably older than most (put it this way, I am teaching my 12 year old son guitar and he will quickly be surpassing me - speed seems a lot easier for him). But I have learned there is no shortcut to guitar and practicing is required if you want to improve - I just get stuck on what I should be practicing at this point so a lesson plan would help. Guitar is theraputic for me, and I also play at my chuch a few times a month (rock worship like Hillsong United, Switchfoot, etc).

I was almost to the point of getting a teacher but it seems expensive for what it is so I thought I would see what GMC could do, maybe with a mentoring program to give me that one on one type experience with a customized lesson plan (which is what I think I need at this point).
I would say I am intermediate, but self taught, I have learned some bad habits, that are more beginner level. Style is definitely rock, but would want to get better at blues too (since most rock guitar is blues influenced).

Favorite guitarists are Slash, Edge, EVH, Hendrix).

So where do I start and how do I learn about all the hidden secrets of GMC?

Thanks for all your help,

Michael

PS - And on top of it all, looks like I can't spell very good from my title - "Ben rather than "Been" - unfortunately an edit won't allow me to change that - Sorry.

Hi welcome back

The typo error "Ben" just made me curious to read this post biggrin.gif

Where to start is hard for use if you don't know you goals but maybe the guitar series are a good way to start and also the GMC theory PDF

Maybe think about your goals first but here is a start:

series: https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/video-les.../lesson-series/

Therory PDF:https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=33779

Regards
Robert

p.s. Hillsong United rocks indeed

Hi Michael! Your post really makes sense. It's difficult to choose what to work and how and that's why we are here to guide you in this learning progress. I'm now giving the Vchat sessions course that you have already discovered and there is also a Led Zeppelin collab now ready to join at my personal board. This is the link: here
Cosmin has started to mentor students and I could do the same if you want it. You can choose the instructor that fits better with your tastes (Cosmin, Ben, Sinisa, Alex or me) and ask for being mentored. I recommend it 100%! smile.gif

Hi Michael, welcome to GMC !

Here's a post I made about using the video chat https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_fo...showtopic=41145 so you can get into the swing of things !

I always recommend choosing small but manageable goals.. enough to challenge you to improve but achievable so you're always making visible progress. Getting a series of small successes under our belts is crucial for us to keep our enthusiasm. As always, feel free to ask anybody anything on here ! smile.gif

Welcome back! smile.gif Todd here. I do our Saturday Video Chats and I'd say....START GOING TO VIDEO CHATS! smile.gif You'll find out which instructors have a style of play and teaching that works best for you and you can learn wads in video chat and ask questions in real time.

Also, find some collabs that seem cool and you will get personal feedback on your playing. Many are video collabs which is even better for critique.

In short, jump in and get dirty! smile.gif

Thanks for all the tips guys. Just checked out Gabes video chat lesson today - He can shred for sure. Way beyond where I am at presently. I think I will spend some time checking out the Chats and such and maybe going to the series lessons to set a foundation. At some point I will want to plug into the mentoring but I am not sure where I would begin (I know bits and pieces of stuff.

I am not sure if any of you think this way , but I feel like going back to the basics and buidling from there but being more thorough this next time around. I think one of my biggest problems is trying to move through the lessons too quickly without practical application - Applying them - i don't spend enough time learning other bands songs.

I need to get some speed in my picking (Not crazy speed but faster) and need to develop some dexterity in my right - Hit too many wrong notes.

Well its all about the journey.

Sounds like your next chat is on AP so I am going to try and get in there as its one of my goals.

Yes I do.. I've read this advice so much, not just about guitar but any activity.. when you've either had a long layoff or you've just got to a point of frustration, then it's best to take some time practising the basics and getting some good results to give you confidence and a bit of clarity and purpose smile.gif
