As in yesterday's poll a lot of GMC members have mentioned that alternate picking is one of the areas they want to improve, so I thought I post one of my exercises on alternate picking.

This is a lick from my first album Sharp Guitars From a Flat Planet. The song is called "Streamline" and this segment is in the key of C lydian. This key has the same notes as the G major scale, but its root is C, so the seven notes are: C D E F# G A B. Notice the raised fourth, which gives the famous lydian sound to this scale. Without this raised fourth, the scale would be simply called C major.

Let's see and hear the exercise:

As the tablature shows, each note should be picked twice (up and then down). Use alternate picking throughout the whole section. Of course, make sure that you choose an appropriate tempo for yourself, where you feel comfortable. Raise the BPM with a metronome/MIDI drum track with increments of 5, for the best results.

Thanks a lot, very useful indeed. In the poll sweeping got actually more votes. Can we expect some useful exercise for sweeping also ?
