GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ Punk Collab - Guitar Solos & Vocals Required!
Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Dec 23 2015, 09:29 PM
Hey friends! Welcome to my new collab!
This one is based on a Punk Rock backing track taken from my new http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/20-Punk-Bands-In-one-song/.
If you listen to the backing, you'll identify 3 parts from the lesson (DieToten Hosen, Rise Against and Social Distortion) You can go to those parts in the lesson to learn the chords and rhythm.
You can record solos over the whole backing or you can choose one part and solo over it. The same goes for the vocals, you can create lyrics and vocal lines for the part that you like more.
Tempo: 90 bpm
Guitar Solos:
If you are planning to solo over this one, you can use G major over the first (Die Toten Hosen), A minor (Rise Against) over the second one and G major over the third one (Social Distortion). You can use also use the Pentatonic scales.
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/scalegenerator
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/scalegenerator
Vocals:
Everybody is invited to record vocals and write lyrics.
Files:
You can share audio files for the audio mix and also a video or picture for the final video.
Deadline: January 10th
Who is in?
FINAL VIDEO & COMMENTS:
Ok friends! This is the final video for this amazing collab!!
I’m really glad with the final results of this one so thanks everybody who joined this one and specially Gitarrero for writing lyrics and singing vocals for this one.
Participants:
Gabriel Leopardi – Rhythm Guitar & Vocals Gitarrero – Vocals & Guitar arrangements Trigger - Lead Guitar & arrangements MossRoller – Lead Guitar Phil66 – Guitar melodies in verse Kristofer Dahl – Epic Guitar Solo Procyon – Second Epic Solo Tflava - More Guitar epicness! Todd – Classic Metal Guitar Solo Chris GLP – Punky Solo
Some extra comments:
Gitarrero: You have composed really tasty vocal melodies and lyrics for this one. I think that it’s time to form your punk band and tour with Die Toten Hosen! Your guitar track is also epic and could be full used if this weren’t a collab with many players. By the way, I noticed that the verse riff fits great in the mix. Keep rocking!
Trigger76: Your solo is very tasty. I love how your tone fits with the backing. I think that the use of wah wah and the guitar harmonics are killer choices. Everything is perfectly played so you rock mate. Congrats!
MossRoller: Your phrasing is very tasteful, I enjoy listening to your hole solo over and over. Except by some little sections where lines direction is not totally defined, the overall is killer! Thanks for the cool looking video!
Phil66: I’m glad that you’ve decided to join this one! It’s a pity that I didn’t receive a video from you but your name is shown on screen. It’s not easy to add a guitar solo when vocals are sounding, but in this case, your solo fit great! Thanks mate!
Procyon: Your solo is really cool and could be an instrumental song by itself. You managed really well structure and have a very Satch feel. Well done!
Tflava: You are a very hard worker student and I’m glad to find that your playing is becoming very musical. There are things to clean in your solo, and technique to adjust but the idea is clear and cool to hear. Keep working!
Chris GLP: Killer solo, perfect technique and Gibson Les Paul warmness. Your solo is very enjoyable and fits really well with the style. Thanks for your entry!
Bleez: As I've said via PM, there was something wrong with the scale choices for your solo so I couldn't make it fit. I'm sorry about it!

Don't worry about changes, you can jam over the first section in E minor if you are not comfortable with changes.

Hi, Well I'll give this a shot. I patched together a few rough guitar takes. Not sure if this very punkish though.
Hi mate! Thanks for your take! I like what you've done over each section! There are many cool ideas that will help me to build a great song. The only parts that shows little issues are the connection between parts where you keep a note which doesn't fit good with the new part starting, but this is not a problem because I'm going to combine this with other takes.
If this is your final take please remember to share the only guitar file.

Hello Guys,
Here a first shot. Just some ideas. Maybe you have some advice?
Thanks already.

Hi Tim, thanks for your recording!
Your takes over part 1 and 2 sounds better to me. The first one (over Die Toten Hosen) could be improved by targeting more chord notes. You are playing a very melodic idea so most of the notes are long. I recommend you to re-check them and see which ones could be switched by a chord note which will make your solo more connected with the backing. I suggest doing this exercise: Choose the note that you like less from the solo and change it for a third of the chord that is sounding. Then tell me if you feel it improves it.
The solo over the second part starts ok, but then the ideas are not clear, you need to re-work the following phrases. Try simpler stuff.

Hi everyone, Well I still needed to record a video, so I tried to fix those ugly notes on this take.
That red Rec light and trying to play standing up... Would you like the 'guitar only' files from both takes or is the one from this video fine?
I found out it's really important to light up that green screen...

Lots of tasty melodies and a really cool looking video! You rock mate. Thanks a lot!
Please share the guitar only file from the video take.
Anybody else working on this one? Any lyrics or vocal ideas?

Much harder than I anticipated to come up with ideas. I think it's harder for me with fast paced backing. Also this time of year messes with routines and schedules

My knowledge of punk is fairly limited, this is my first quick stab at it, admittedly it sounds like the love child of Green Day and Blink182 ;-0
So here are the final files... still not as perfect as it should be, but I had to do it now because I will have only little time for guitar playing in the near future
I tried to create some sort oft punkish video... ?!

Hey mate! This is great! It sounds VERY punk. It's simple, catchy and melodic as the great bands would do it. You can polish your playing a little more but it's not totally necessary for this collab. I'll wait for your guitar only take and maybe a video?

Hi Gab, I have also tried to play something to the second part of the track... I have made my own solo so "difficult" for me that I am at the absolute limit...
Fyi I don't think this is correct, it should be 90 bpm.

Hi Chris! I've missed this one at first. I think that your solo sounds interesting. I would only like to suggest to practice it a bit more to polish the phrases and the connections among them.
Just a detail, in the first bend you are reaching a note that is out of scale, try bending to a chord tone. The chord sounding there is Am so you could bend to A, E or C.

Haven't had a lot of time to do much with this and thought I should tidy what I had up originally and get it posted so you at least had something to work with so anyway here it is attached my Green182day effort ;-) , the vid(as punky as I could make it look...errr sorry) is downscaled to get the upload to work, hope its ok. Audio is clipping a bit on the vid but figure you'll be overlaying a new mix?
I started audio from point 0 and included your pre-count.

Hey man!
I tried to make the best of it. Hope you like it
Here is the guitar only an the vid of the recording.
Thanks I added some dissonant/out of key notes when you switched keys for some punk flavor I'm using this in todays chat lesson also. Looking forward to the final! Used Th2 and a brunetti (italian) head. Here is the patch.
Gabe, I hate to say it but the first section seems to be G Major, not E minor. I did solo in E Minor in the first part and it gave it an out of tune/dissonant sound which sounded punk so I kept it but it's entirely out of key IMHO The first sections Rood notes are actually G Major.
I know it's a bit late to say this now as the due date has past, but for those who struggled a bit to make E Minor fit, don't worry, it's not you, it's just punk music!

If you are planning to solo over this one, you can use E minor over the first (Die Toten Hosen), A minor (Rise Against) over the second one and G major over the third one (Social Distortion). You can use also use the Pentatonic scales.
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/scalegenerator
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/scalegenerator

Vocals:
Everybody is invited to record vocals and write lyrics.
Files:

Deadline: January 10th
Who is in?
Posted by: Phil66 Jan 9 2016, 10:09 PM
Okay, here's my go. It actually is about as good as the many many punk bands I saw in my youth in backstreet pubs, a lot of them didn't really know what they were doing they were just enjoying it and making a statement with their lyrics so I think I can get away with this one being a bit shoddy I couldn't think of anything for the piece before this so I've faded it in.
After posting this I realised I hadn't checked my tuning, when I did it was not good. Sorry Gab. This was a total improve and probably the best feeling I got so I wouldn't be able to reproduce it. I can try tomorrow to come up with something again if you want as I know you won't use something out of tune. I'm so angry with myself and my ear isn't good enough to notice, especially when playing short notes and as quick as this. I guess I was being a little bit too "live punk" as I suspect they were very often out of tune when playing live, like Mr Jones .
Posted by: ChrisGLP Jan 10 2016, 12:02 PM
Hi Gab... here my try for the second part of the collab... it was a very good improvisation training for me
The bendings at the beginning and the end... it was the first time that I wanted disharmonious bends
Hey mate! As I've said via PM, this idea sounds good to me! Could you please share the lyrics here to let me or any other GMCer add some backing vocals for this one?
Also, remember to share the only vocals final takes when you have them.

Hi Todd, you're right! It's my fault.
However, as both G major and E minor share the same notes, and I suggested using Pentatonic scale I think that this shouldn't have been a problem, unless using too much C note over G chord... (as you did ). This note is part of the scale but it's a fourth which is not a great place to stay too much.... except if you are SO punk rock.
Posted by: Gitarrero Jan 11 2016, 07:51 PM
Hey Gab,
here are the raw vocal files. Two for the chorus (I sang one version more aggressive and one a bit higher) and a separate one for verse 1 and verse 2.
My guitar files are in my post above.
As for the video, can you give me time till tomorrow to record it?
Christian
Oh, here are the lyrics:
Verse 1: Sitting in my office, got punk in my head listening to Bad Religion and Minor Threat my boss comes in and takes offense I swear someday I will Rise Against.
Verse 2: I come home to my wife and she kisses my neck but I can only think of Anti Flag from the backyard I can hear my Offspring but I turn up The Ramones and then I sing
Chorus: The KKK took my baby away now I just play guitar all day don't want no job or a family just play guitar at GMC
You nailed it!! I spent waaay to much time using the C over the G chord thinking it should work. If it wasn't for this I'd have never noticed. But the dissonant sound gave it a punk vibe so I kept it all

Sorry Gab,
I missed getting a picture to you in time, I've been at a trade show all day so couldn't do anything today, I've sent you some before I noticed this had been posted
Thanks for the collab Gab, this is awesome that students and tutors alike have made a song that could be on an album. My monitors must not be very good, I can only just hear my part We should release "GMC: The best of so far"
Ready for the next

YEAH!! This is an amazing result!
Looking back at it, my take felt a bit out style wise - it's safe to say I feel 'outdone' by GMC students You guys rock!
And I got a very warm feeling by seeing Gitarero lead the punky way

I think I'm happy that I made you feel warm, Kris

I'm glad that you liked!! I can't stop listening to this song. Gitarrero you have to write your own Punk album!
Kris, I love how your solo fits in this song. The backing goes mid tempo, progressions changes and your solo is so expressive. It gives the track a very refreshing feel.

Congrats to everyone on another fine collab. Great job everyone! Except for Kris. Kris! Sit up straight man, and quit trying to eat your guitar while soloing! Sorry , I just couldn't resist yanking your chain a bit on that one.

Thx Kris... I have made this backing with EZKeys Grand Piano... With this software you can choose different styles (ballads, blues, etc.). Each style consists of different modules (intro, verse, bridge, chorus, etc.). Now you have the possibility to combine these different modules as you want and create the chords and speed... and much more possibilities... Its awesome!
Laurent, lets wait what Gab decides which collab is the next...

Even if Gabriel decide to do another thing, nothing forbid us to do something with this BT.

Yeah, very hard,
I'm getting better at relative pitch very slowly but perfect pitch is light years away.
Are you confident it is in the key you said?
Cheers
