Thanks mate. For my second or third time 🤣
I had to study more theory to have a solid background and understand more things. I also discovered in the last years what works for me and what not.

But i am glad to be back and Looking forward to work together with yall.

I have some things that i'm working on for the coming months .

I started the lesson rhytmic funk development from Diego budicin and wil working on that one. Im also working on the song sanitarium from metallica and wil revord it in a couple of weeks i think.

My goal is also to study the modes and im working on improvisation with it to cover 2 or 3 style in one mode and record it. They are the 7 normal modes but also 3 modes of the melodic minor and 2 of the harmonic minor.

For my Technique Am i focussing on my legato and study that from a lesson book. In the future i will also do bens land of legato and another legato song.

At least im working on latin improvisation. Rhythm and lead.

So as you can hear i do a lot but i've made a schedule so i don't forget my goals. My main focus is improvisation and i made and maybe will make some arrangement in different styles.

If its ok i will send you sometimes some improvisation or recordings so you can help me.

Thanks in advance man.

Hey mate,

Here my first improvisation. Jazz ionian. I tries to stay in 2 areas with my solo and to end some times on the extensions. The 9th or 13th.

Hi mate!! Nice first improv!!

The quality of your video is amazing! When practicing improvisation, and mostly when learning to improvise over jazz and fusion backings, I think that it's good to work on different concepts each day. In this Jam, I can see that you are exploring the scale shapes, and creating linear phrasing. It's very important to continue doing it to get more and more familiar with this type of phrasing.

The main thing that this improvisation is lacking is to use wider intervals in your phrases. This is a characteristic of jazz and fusion players.

Some concepts/techniques that helped me with this:

- Using Hybrid Picking.
- Superimposing triads and arpeggios.
- String skipping.
- Superimposing Pentatonics

Have you ever tried these ideas?

Posted by: tflava Oct 28 2020, 04:02 PM

Hey mate.

Thanks. I recorded it with my audio interface this time.

Thanks for the feedback man.
I will focus on some wider intervals and will super impose some arpeggios. I think i will first super impose all the triads that excist with in the G major scale so i can hear what it sound.

And maybe later i can trie to superimpose the 4 note arpeggios over the chords then.

I will also try to super impose other pentatonics. I'll keep you updated. Thanks a lot

Hello man.

i'm also working on your song rock ballad licks.
here i have record myself at 70 bpm.
I will focus next week(s) on getting it at 82 bpm.

Maybe you have things where i have to care extra.

And do you play it clean or with a Light toch of overdrive?
thanks.

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Oct 30 2020, 02:07 PM

Nice!! It's cool to see you playing this one!! smile.gif

This lesson is full of small details. You are playing the whole thing tight and clean except by the last lick that has timing issues.

I think that you need to continue playing this one in order to feel more comfortable with the different parts. You need to feel more familiar with the licks.

And then, the following things to polish are:

- Articulation: Notes duration.
- Bending and Vibrato
- Dynamics & groove

How?

Work again on smaller section trying to get the more of these elements.

Posted by: tflava Oct 31 2020, 09:09 AM

Ok thanks. I will focus on it and try to practice each part seperate.

Hey man.

here is my new jazz improvisation. I tried to superimpose the Bm7 and Em7 over it. And also to impose the B minor pentatonic scale over it.
The other triads didnt sound right for me over the track somehow. Maybe because of the 4 or 11th in it.

I also liked to play the F# minor pentatonic over it but didnt use it in this improvisation because it put me in the Lydian mode and i wanted to stay in Ionian. I also tgried to make wider intervals.

Here is also a rec from Rhytmic funk development. I have to studie hard on this one to get the groove and the licks under control and sometimes i rushed a bit. But i wanted to record it in this stage so you can hear the progress ( i hope so then laugh.gif )

Thanks in advanced mate for your help.

Hi mate!! Good stuff here!

I can hear that you are using all those concepts now in your jazz improvisation. There is still room to get more comfortable with them but this is definitely in the right direction. I would continue working on this ideas while adding this two elements:

- Motif development
- Incorporating some jazz licks into your vocabulary (you can borrow them from Stephane's GMC lessons)

But again, those wider intervals and superimposing tricks are making your phrases more jazzy/fusion style. Keep going!

The rhythm lesson is also on the right track, but it obviously need more work in order to make all those grooves sound tighter. At this point, I feel that you should dedicate some time to work on small blocks instead of playing the whole thing over and over.

Posted by: tflava Nov 2 2020, 08:03 AM

Allright thanks man.
I will try to focus on motifs now and try to incorporate all the other things. I have problems learning Licks because i forget them soon butt i will listen some more to jazz Licks.

I will also move forward to another backing track butt still practice the jazz sometimes to get more comfortabele with this style. Thanks

With the funk i will now work on the parts alone and build the speed from 50 percent using guitar pro. I will take another Rec over a week and see how the progress is then.
Thanks

Hey man.

Here i recorded the rock ballad.
I have problems with the speed lick in the beginning.
In the lick in 00.30 i used my fourth finger and a slide instead of my third finger but i will also trie to use my 3th finger and see if that works better for me.

greetz

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Nov 5 2020, 08:42 PM

Cool!! This is getting better mate! Yes, those two parts need special attention so I would isolate the licks and work on them as exercises. These are also cool licks to incorporate into your own vocabulary when improvising.

Besides that, there is room to polish articulation and other details but this is much better now. You are on the right track!

Posted by: tflava Nov 7 2020, 08:40 AM

Allright man. Working on it. I'll try to play those Licks every day to get the proper speed.
And i will sure incorporate that lick in my arsenaal 💪
I think that its good for me to use some more sequencial ideas like these Lick in my own improvisation.

I'll keep working 👍

Hey man.

Here is an improvisation of me practicing my latin rhythm and lead.
I tried to comp in the background and play the changes.
I tried to only accent one or 2 notes during the 3 chord because its so short.
Im curious what you think about it. smile.gif

I also keep on practicing the funk.
This is a week further now so i thought i show yhou the progress.
What do you think of the tone? It is hard to fill tghe backing track zo i have a little delay. i thought it was ok but im curious to what you think about the guitar sound.

Thanks in advance man!

Hi mate!! Great job here!!

Your latin jam sounds cool!! The first name that came to mind while listening is obviously Santana. That's why I would like to suggest working a bit more on phrasing, articulation and rhythm. His vibrato can also be good to take some inspiration. Notice how his phrasing is more defined, and how he uses shorter and longer notes, and repetitions to build his licks. I don't mean that you need to copy him, but you can get some nice ideas from his soloing and incorporate then in your own vocabulary.

This is just a random vid, search for him on Youtube:

(solo starts at 00:49)

The funky rhythm needs more work yet, but you are on the right track. You tone sounds good to me, it fits perfect with the backing track. I think that you should isolate the trickier sections to polish them.

Congrats on your hard work mate.

Posted by: tflava Nov 10 2020, 07:00 PM

Allright thanks man.
Im a big fan of santana thats also why i want to study some latin rhythms and lead.
What do you think of the chord comping? I tried to use multiple chord out of de Ddorian mode and play different i version to maintain more knowledge of the fretboard.

I know what you mean with the phrasing and will work in it. Im gonna try to play with question en answer based ideas and use different rhythmic patterns. Then i will send it again.
Thanks for the feedback 👌

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Nov 11 2020, 12:46 AM

Great! The rhythm and chords sound good to me. Not exactly the same rhythm but you can get some ideas from these lessons:

Hey man.

Here i have an improv over the latin progression focussing on the phrasing aspect.
I tried to combine longer and shorter notes and use some question and answer ideas.
I'll hope this is a bit more of the feedback you gave.

greetz Tim

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Nov 12 2020, 12:00 AM

Yes! This is a lot better mate. This is definitely the direction. I recommend you to continue exploring this type of phrasing. Focus on repetition, use of dynamics, silences, and all those elements that are part of Latin guitar soloing.

Some more inspiration... Salinas is one of the greatest guitarists from my country ever...

Posted by: tflava Nov 12 2020, 11:49 AM

Hey man.
Thanks for the tip. What a wonderfull player. I listened to a few songs but i defintely going to listen more to him. i have to say that i like music with more complex harmonies more and more. smile.gif happy.gif

With the latin i will practice some different progressions which are common but i will now first focuss on a blues track. I like a lot of styles of music so i try to change the styles sometimes so i keep motivated and dont stop learning. I think i rather be a guitarist who can play a few styles good then to play one style insane smile.gif

But i will repeat the stuff and the feedback you gave me and everytime that i play something i hope to incorporate the past tips and feedback. So thanks al lot.

I also recorded the modern Rock ballad track from yours and feel like i want to put it in the REC zone this time.

And by the way very nice work with collab. Supercool with the vids of him mixed in.

Greetz Tim

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Nov 12 2020, 03:15 PM

Thanks for your words about the collab! smile.gif

I think that your plan sounds good. Curiously Luis Salinas is known as one of the most versatile guitarists. You can't define him with one genre, he is a master of jazz, blues, rock, latin, folk, tango, and much more.

I'll check your REC take in a moment, so check my comment there!

Posted by: tflava Nov 13 2020, 08:06 AM

Allright man. Thanks for the feedback. Im working also on the shred bootcamp with todd and i try to spend 20 minutes every day in practicing his excersises with metronome.
I think for the coming 2 week i will also take the 3 difficult Licks with it and gradually raise the tempo.
If it Dont works then then the speed part is behind my playing ability and i have to accept that. Thats also why im working with the bootcamp because i want to learn to play also faster Licks.
In the meantime i also start another lesson which is less difficult.
Sometimes i hear lessons that i really like but they are on the Edge of my ability but of i really like it i will give it a try if i think ut Could be possible. Just like with the funk lesson.

Maybe i can first record the funk in 80 procent till its good and then gradually work it with 5 procent. What do you think?

Im also still working on bens land of legato as an daily excersise. When i think its consistent i will record it. I think it is nearby.

Allright you will hear from me 😁😎

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Nov 13 2020, 02:54 PM

Hi mate! Great plan!

Yes, recording and practicing the lessons at slower tempos is helpful. There is not only one way to do it, there are many methods that you can combine in order to master a lesson.

- Playing the whole lesson slower.
- Working on parts as mini lessons.
- Working on trickier licks over metronome, create your own variations as exercises.

You can't share lesson takes at slower tempos in REC but you can do it here, or at the practice room to receive feedback.

Posted by: tflava Nov 13 2020, 08:17 PM

Hey man.

Yes i think i play some trickier parts witj a metronome.
Yes i meant to revord it slower and post it on my thread so you can look at it.

Hey man.

here a blues jam from me.

In the first 12 bars I tried to keep it very bluesy and play the minor pentatonic.
In the second 12 bars i tried to use more the 6ths of the chords to make it some more sweeter jazzy flavor.

And in the last 12 bars i comped the 1 and 4 chords with 9sus4 chords so in the improvisation i tyried to outline the 4 of the chords.

Waht do you think?

Greetz Tim

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Nov 19 2020, 07:33 PM

Nice blues jam mate! I like your phrasing here. Your note choices are good on both sections. I don't notice anything wrong or that sounds too outside. This is a cool jam.

Trying to comment about the things that you can improve, I think that rhythm and timing could be good elements to work here. There are some moments (for example around 00:26/00:30) where your timing is not tight. This happens in different parts of the solo and is something normal when improvising, you just need to focus a bit more on it. Identify if there is a specific figure that is giving problems.

I also think that you can experiment more with rhythm, and articulation (as it happened with the latin jam). One thing that helps me is to listen to some masters for some minutes and then get back to practice. If you want to get more from their rhythm, you can try this experiment:

- Take a lick with a great rhythm, play it over a backing track. Make variations. Keep the rhythm but change the notes. Try things like that and your rhythm will improve,

By the way, congrats on your hard work!

Posted by: tflava Nov 19 2020, 07:48 PM

Ok thanks a lot man.
When i listeners it back i also noticed that the rhythm lacks some diversity sometimes 😁
I think that i focused most on note choice this jam so im glad with your feedback so i can pay attention to it.
I will make another improvisation and now try to incorporate the rhythm but will still manager to make a good note choice. Maybe play some triplets or 16ths sometimes. And will listen to some nice blues players.

I also play every day with metronome with the bootcamp from todd and already notice some difference. When i practice it i also play the fastt lick from your modern rock ballad. I notice that i can handle the speed when isolating but then when i record its difficult to play it well. I think because how i have to hold my pick then or something. But ill keep trying.

Im also working on 3 other lessons so i don't have to play one song whole the time. But still focussing a lot in improvisation. So i, ll keep up and you will hear from me. 😁

Thanks as always

Hey mate.

i just recorded the modern Rock ballad again.
The fast part is just a little above my level so i will quit this lesson now.
I will put it in the REC zone.
Im working for my speed with Todd and making progress but this part was just a little too fast.

I also sorted out what i wanted to play over the collab and i think its gonna be real nice.
I think i try to record it later this week.

It's also cool to know that you found the right input for the collab! Can't wait to hear it!

Hey mate.

I just recorded some things i am working on.
First is the Bens land of legato.
I'm seraching for the best hand position and also the transitions between chords are difficult.

Im also working on the B minor ballad. doe you think the vibrato needs wider?
I also going to workn on the legato part slower.

And at last i recorded again over the blues progression. i know tried to focus more on the phrasing and create a more blues rock sound.
I hope you like it.

thanks and im keep working on all the hings.

Yeah! The problem here is when you connect the patterns. I don't see a problem with your right hand position, it looks natural from here. But maybe you need to try to do less strength, to relax it while playing.

The best way to polish the connections is to work on 2 patterns per time as a loop. That's what works for me and what I've seen that worked for students.

The problem here is that you are not doing the vibrato movement from your wrist, and the same happens with bending. The first exercises here is exactly what you need to do and practice:

Great! This is getting better. I think that you could learn any GMC blues lessons that is similar to this backing to you get new phrases and ideas and create your own variations while jamming. What do you think?

Posted by: tflava Nov 26 2020, 10:55 PM

Ok mate. Thanks tor the advice. I will focuss on Small patterns with the legato and try to relaxx the hand.

With the vibrato im going to try it from the wrist.

The blues is a good idea but im working on a lot now. Im also still working on the funk but not so active.

Maybe you can help me to make a structured plan/schedule👌😅

Im doing the bootcamp and want to do that structural and also keep doing improvisations. But maybe you van help me with which lesson to do first to focuss on a specific Technique.

Thats my probleem sometimes. I sometimes do 6 things for half and got very chaotic in my head. And then i can better do 3 things good.

But the bootcamp is good for my structure and i enioy to play improvisations. So thats what i sure want to do and maybe you can help me manage the rest.

Thanks in advance. I know im not the easiest person to work with 😂

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Nov 26 2020, 11:53 PM

Ok! Can you please make a list of the things that you are currently working and how much time you can practice each day?

Posted by: tflava Nov 27 2020, 08:06 AM

Allright man in working on:

-shred bootcamp, 20 minutes every day
- improvising and theory (sequencing, scales arpeggios etc) this depends. I think 30 minutes to 1 hour.

- bens land of legato : every day 10 minutes i guess
- b minor ballad: sometimes i play it when i pick up my guitar
- funk rhythm workout : also play it sometimes when i pick up the guitar.
- Guido lesson advanced power chords : also sometimes when i pick up the guitar. Not in routine.

-ear training: every day for 10 or 20 minutes between work or before or after playing. It really helps me to find chord progressions or to find riffs ir lead parts.

I cannot say that i have 2 hours every day because it depends if ky daughter is to school or for how Long i have to work.
But i think in generally i practice 2 hours a day but dividend in 2 or 3 parts between the day.

Thanks

Ow and i forgot to say that in also working on a reggae song. But ill do that with a mate from my band so its not in practice time.
I only have to write a solo for my guitar but the rest is almost good. But sometimes i jam with friends and then we arrange something or just go for jamming.

I play with 2 bands. A reggae and a top 1000 band but we Dont practice now because of the corona

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Nov 27 2020, 01:59 PM

Hi mate,

This is a lot of stuff, but you seem to be very organized. If you are comfortable and motivated I wouldn't change anything. However, if you feel that the blocks are too short for each topic, you could focus on 1 concept each day while the other would be just played twice or 3 times (5 minutes) to maintenance.

On the other hand, what I got from your schedule is that you work:

20 minutes of technique

30 minutes of improvisation

This is not bad at all. The key would be to work on 1 improvisational concept each day. Some concepts examples:

- Arpeggios (Major, minor, dominant, diminished)
- Modes of the major scale
- Triads
- Major blues improvisation
- Minor blues improvisation
- Following the chords with thirds.
- Horizontal phrasing.
- Scale sequences

and the list continues forever. Having a notepad with concept ideas is a good plan.

Posted by: tflava Nov 27 2020, 03:38 PM

Yes thats real nice man. The problem that im feeling is that i don't spend enough time on 1 lesson and then maybe lose it. I sometimes think that its better to focus on maybe 2 lessons besides the bootcamp and improv.

I think for now that i will focus on the b minor ballad especially on my vibrato and bending and on the legato too smooth the transitions.

For the soloing im also working on a designer curriculum from musicians institute so i will take these concept also in jy improvisation and let you know then what was my main goal. Is that ok?

Posted by: tflava Nov 27 2020, 06:04 PM

I was thinking one more thing. In the past i tried to study some Licks but at the end i always forget them after some weeks.
Maybe if ill do an improv i can study one lick and try to come up witj some variations and try to remeber it. What do you think?

Yes, this sound good to me. It doesn't make sense to work on many lessons if you can't connect enough with them. It's better to reduce the quantity and increase the quality of your practice.

Tell me more about the designer curriculum, I don't know what it is.

Yes, that's the best thing that you can do. When learning lessons, the best way to incorporate those licks and ideas is to improvise over the backing creating variations of those licks, and connecting those licks with other ideas of your own.

This should be combined with the "concepts" idea that I suggested before, because it's always better to learn concepts instead of licks. The licks are usually forgotten, but concepts become natural.

Posted by: tflava Dec 1 2020, 10:24 AM

hey mate,

yes that is something that i recognise lately. Im trying to improve the quality of my practice and see that i need an other method to work on the lessons then before. I started now with little licks from the funk lesson with metronome. Im also focussing on slowing down my vibrato and i think my problem is that besides i use my fingers more then my wrist i almost all the time pull down and not up and down.
So im working on it slowly. I think i have a good routine now where all the musical concepts and techniques i want to learn excist.

The curriculum is from a book that i own for a long time. It is designed for students that wants to learn theory en soloing excersis that you also get if you want to study music for school.
After each chapter there are goals presented and things you need to know and can play before you move on. Like:
- play a solo with use of arpeggios and mix it with the major scale.
- Combine different sequences. For an example a grouping of four but played like 1235- 2346 etc.
- Be able to play 2 patterns of the scale etc.

An troughout the book you learn to play the scales in fourths fifths and other sequences. You study all the modes. Minor and major key center playing. Make use of secondary dominants. Vertical soling. Use the harmonic minor modes, melodic minor modes and symmetrical scales. 3 notes per string scales So its very diverse and well organised and it helps me to have solid goals.

About the improvisations. With every new improvisation backing track i want to learn 3 licks and incorporate them in my playing besides the context. I started allready and i hope i then get a solid base of some usefull licks and memorize them also.

Like i said i try to study on a different way then before and accept that is better to learn slowly but effective then fast but messy.

So I'll keep on working happy.gif

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Dec 1 2020, 03:41 PM

Excellent mate! How is your progress on that book?

Posted by: tflava Dec 1 2020, 04:01 PM

I just picked it up again to go slowly trough it from the basics 😁
When i have some time i will record something from it with a backing track. I try to record the collab tonight. Greetz tim

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Dec 1 2020, 04:22 PM

Ok! You really need to work on those concepts, and once you master them, you can go for more musical concepts as well.

What's the name of the book?

Posted by: tflava Dec 1 2020, 06:03 PM

The name of the book is:

All in one guitar soloing course: beth marlis and Daniel gilbert.

ITs published by hall leonard and the authors are from musicians institute. I believe its a music school in California.

Allright curious what you think about it.
If you want some chapters i maybe can scan it and send it to you.

This week i an working on a funk track and a latin track for improv.

Here is a practice improv from the funk. I practice it for a week and then maybe record something.

Hi mate! I couldn't check it yet. If you want you can post here the table of content page. I was planning to check it at amazon but it's not showed there.

Your funky jam sounds cool. Good rhythm, groove, and use of silence. Good phrasing as well. Have you ever heard Scofield? You cold get some ideas from his funky albums.

Posted by: tflava Dec 3 2020, 07:00 PM

Allright thanks mate 😁
Yes i know matt schofield hé has very nice playing.
I will look for some Licks.

I send you the table of content with email because the picture were too big for the thread.

Hey man,

im working on my funk backing track and learned 3 licks.
2 of Matt schofield en 1 of John scofield.

yesterday night i was jamming with my buddie and we made our own funk backing track.
He played the bass and i played the guitars and keys. The drum is from studio drummer.

What do you think of it?
We wanted to develop something in the mixolydian mode. Maybe in tghe future i will make a solo over it.

Hi mate! Cool to know that you are learning new licks by them!!

The jam track sounds very cool! The best thing that you can do to train your improvisation is to jam with other musician! The track sounds groovy, you both did a great job!

Some ideas for the next jam:

Posted by: tflava Dec 6 2020, 08:19 PM

Hey man,

Very nice vids.
We will definitely go for some blues next time and incorporate the Q & A idea from above. Thanks for the tips.

And is it possible with the collab that you put my name Tim under the vid instead of tflava smile.gif Its a really really old name that i dont like anymore but i also dont want to change all my emails and accounts and stuff cool.gif

Thanks greetz Tim

Hey mate.

Excuse me but i posted the B minor Balld in the Rec because it felt i had to do it.
I worked especially hard on the vibrato and trie to maintain it in my daily routine.
After this lesson i will focus on the Funk Rhythm and still on the legato.

Great Tim! I hope to hear your Q&A jam soon! smile.gif

Ok about your name on collab. I'll check your REC take!

Posted by: tflava Dec 8 2020, 09:25 AM

Allright i think i will record it then with him the Jam 😁

Thanks for the comments about the Rec.
I think for me its better now to focuss on vibrato and legato on a daily routine.
Im working with todd in the bootcamp and i notice already a huge improvement in my hand sync so i think its also good to work in a daily base in the vibrato, bending vibrato and legato.

I thought if i work the next month on:
- 20.min picking workout
- 20 min legato
- 10 min vibrato
- 10 min bending vibrato.

I thought for the vibrato lessons i can use the lesson from ben vintaro odessey 5 you gave me and vibrato oddesey 3 which is bending vibrato.
And then maybe after every week i van Shoot a little vibrato vid so can you see if im doing it well.. 😅

Thanks for all the help

Hey mate.

I recorded my dorian funk improvisation.
Hope you like it. I incorporated 3 licks from others inside smile.gif
I also tried to incorporate 2 or 3 melodic sequences patterns.

Hey mate,

I practice every day the techniques and im really notice that im improving in my picking and also legato. I think i will keep this routine for a few weeks and then sometimes switch a different technique. So that i play every day 40 minutes of technique only switch the techiques sometimes. but first i wnat to have a good solid legato and vibrato smile.gif

here i have a Rec from bens land of legato. Is it good enough for in the REC and move on for bens land of legato 2, or should i practice it some more?

Here i recorded the vibrato lesson and bending vibrato im working on. So you can see if i use good technique or do i need to pay attention to some things. When i do the vibrato slowly its ok but when ill do it faster its difficult for me.

Thanks again. And you did a wonderfull job with the collab smile.gif

Hi mate, good job here!!

I think that both techniques are on the right track but you obviously need more time. There are two things to have in mind while practicing. The first one is that you need to try to relax your left hand when playing both legato and vibrato. The second one is related to bending and vibrato. and it's that you need to focus more the movement from your wrist.

Regarding REC, you always can share takes there in order to get more varied feedback. You are ready to start working on lesson 2, but you need to keep the first one in your daily practice for some more days.

Posted by: tflava Dec 14 2020, 08:31 AM

Hey mate.

Allright thanks for your feedback.
With the vibrato, i push the string hard with my finger. Do i need to relaxx my finger more and the focuss on moving my wrist?

I will practice the legato more then and maybe out the lesson 2 also in my routine. 🙂

Yes! At least you need to find a balance between those two things. Pushing hard is necessary when you are playing Yngwie/Zakk Wylde style vibrato.

Ow and sorry btw what were your thoughts on the table of content of the book and on the funk improv?

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Dec 15 2020, 03:58 PM

I missed your funk jam! Sorry about it! I love this one. Your phrasing is very rhythmical in this one. Good use of call & response concept, and articulation. This is definitely the right track!

You just need to continue experimenting with rhythm since it tends to become repetitive after some time but this is very good mate congrats!

Regarding the book. Yes, I know that book and I think that it has a very good structure. It's a good first step to get the basics of improvisation. I think that you need to get into those concepts before we move forward. Also, each of those concepts can be expanded, but first get into what's covered there.

Posted by: tflava Dec 15 2020, 05:17 PM

Hey mate, no problem! smile.gif

Yes i'm working in the background o the content of the book. In each chapter are also 32 or 3 sequencial phrases so i wnat to learn them also for at least on 2 patterns smile.gif I try to mix everything up to stay positive and keep motivated.
On the one hand i have the technique excersises which i continue to improve.
And on the other hand i have the improvisational side. Here i'm working on some compositions but also a lot of improvisations. I trie to mix up some different styles. I also use the book and work trough it slowly. Im now in chapter 6 or something. Some things here are allready familliair but i trie to focuss on the things i've gone trough too fast without understand the key concepts of it.
im also written a song for my wife and when its done i can maybe share it with you but it takes time to finish it smile.gif

So i think my goals for improvisations are:
- make improvisations in different modes
- Work at a slow pace trough the concepts of the book
- Working on latin guitar
-Working on the blues
- Try to start with vertical soloing onslow songs
- Go on with the collabs and compositions.

I want to mix these things up and work trough it on my own pace but also change between the goals to keep motivated.

I know it is a lot but for know i'm feeling like i got it under controle happy.gif

im very thankfull for your help because it really helps me a lot.

Cheers tim

Hi mate! Your latin jams are sounding better and better! I can hear some Santana phrases here. It's good to see you experimenting with different rhythms. Those fast ornaments make a bit difference! As I always say, listening to the masters is the best for inspiration! Good job.

Yes, this looks like a long list but it's more like a road map. You don't need to work on everything by once. You can take 1 concept each day or a few each week and you'll be practicing the right things to achieve your goal. I'll share something more. My idea is not to confuse you but to organize all these concepts that you listed here. This article summarizes everything you need to work in order to become a better improviser: https://www.guitarhabits.com/10-essentials-on-guitar-improvisation/

Posted by: tflava Dec 20 2020, 09:46 AM

Hey mate.

Thanks its a good road map. I think im in the right routine for it 🙂 im also expanding with some Licks sometimes so i integrate it and try to repeat the licks i like.

Im also Looking to expand my practice Technique routine in the future so i can switch techniques sometimes. But i was wonderig what you think of putting sweep picking in it?
Do you think its usefull to spend some time on it?
I don't need to become a metal trash shredder but i thought maybe its good to learn a bit of the Mechanics so i can use Small parts of it?

Thanks in advance 😁

Ps Ill try to Shoot a legato vid in the evening

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here is the legato vid. Is it ok to post it in the REC and go on with the other legato lesson?

Here is a recording of the vibrato lesson. I notice that its difficult to do the vibrato on lower frets.
Im also thinking that its sitting more difficult then standing because i have less space by my elbow.
What do you think of it?

Thanks again mate

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Dec 21 2020, 02:34 PM

Hi Tim! Great stuff here!

The legato lesson is sounding very good! There are only some small details in connections between patterns but nothing too serious. I also think that you need to relax a bit more your left hand when playing it. That's why I would keep playing this one at least once every day. It's very good for REC!

Vibrato lesson still needs more work. It's a very demanding lesson, mostly when you have to play the faster parts. You're right about the difficulty of vibrato in lower frets. You need to use more strength to bend there.

Im also Looking to expand my practice Technique routine in the future so i can switch techniques sometimes. But i was wondering what you think of putting sweep picking in it?
Do you think its useful to spend some time on it?
I don't need to become a metal trash shredder but i thought maybe its good to learn a bit of the Mechanics so i can use Small parts of it?

Even if you don't want to play fast metal sweeps, this technique, is very useful for other styles. Consider alto getting into economy picking which is basically the same but more applied to scales instead or arpeggios. Another technique that I think you'll enjoy is hybrid picking.

Posted by: tflava Dec 21 2020, 02:41 PM

Ok thanks mate. I will incorporate it into my practice routine and also hyprid picking in the future smile.gif

I notice i get some bored of the vibrato lesson but ill get the idea and think i know how to work on it.
I found a lesson what i think combine both so that im working on my vibrato but also in sweep picking.
Its malmsteen made easy from ben higgins.

I'll put the legato in the REC and go in with legato 2 but keep practicing the first one at least one a day.

Thanks again and you will hear from me 😁

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Dec 22 2020, 02:03 AM

Excellent decision mate! Please do the same each time you get bored of a lesson or exercise. There is also a funnier way to practice a technique or concept. If you don't find it, just ask here! biggrin.gif

Allright mate thanks.

Ive just worked a few days with the funk rhythm and isolatie some parts and work with metronome.

I revorded in 80 procent and full speed.
What do you think?

Greetz and merry christmas in advance 😁👍

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Dec 25 2020, 06:52 PM

Hi mate! Great to see you working hard on this lesson.

I notice that you still need work at 80%. At this tempo, you can play the riffs clean and clear, but there is still work to do in order to adjust timing, and to make some parts sound groovier. You need to connect even more with the overall groove.

When playing the lesson at 100%, some links don't sound clear, the slides aren't sounding right, and most of the parts sound like "hurried". You are clearly now comfortable at this tempo. However, playing a bit at this tempo can help you to become more comfortable at slower tempos. So you can still play it a few times at 100%, and then try to increase tempo gradually from 80 to 100. Once you are getting closer to 100%, you can try a bit 110 or 120% to push it a bit more and try to make 100% easier.

Posted by: tflava Dec 27 2020, 07:13 PM

Hey mate.

I will continue practicing the funk on 80 procent and try what you say about go to 120 procent.

Im also workig on the malmsteen. Here is a fast recording.

Im also gonna start with the collabs. I made a solo with my voice over the backing so i can practice the collab and ear trainig at the same time so ill hope i know what to play this week smile.gif

I've also made a song where i play all instruments and the voice. Maybe if im done with the mix i can send it to you, Its my first song that i try to mix myself.

Hi mate!

Great stuff!! Nice to see you connected and working hard! smile.gif

I notice that you need to polish a bit your sweep picking technique. If you listen to Malmsteen playing this type of things, or Ben in the lesson, you'll see that the notes are muted as soon as the following note sounds. This can be achieved by muted a bit the strings with the palm of your right hand but also by moving a bit your left hand fingers to mute them. Please let me know if this is clear and if you need any more details about it. In other words, the notes of the arpeggio don't have to sound together as it would happen in a chord.

Check this lesson:

Allright thanks man. Its clear what you mean 😁 i have to focuss that i don't mute the strings to much but i will practice it and maling it better 👌

Yes, the key is to mute the string only to make them sound with less sustain. However, "how much you mute them" is also part of an artistic decision. You can make sweep sound muted or not, but what's important is to avoid to notes notes continue sounding as soon as the next one is played.

Thanks mate. 😁
The mixing is very hard and not so good as i wanted hut i don't want to spend too muchh time on mixing instead of my guitar.

What i like about makin an arrangement is that i don't need to think like a guitarist but more like a musicians.

Ps im working on the sweep picking part now and its getting better. The notes don't blend in eachother any more 🙂

Posted by: tflava Dec 31 2020, 01:44 PM

Hey mate.

Im working now on the legato for 70 procent speed and it feels nice.
I recorded the Malmsteen lesson because i want to close it so i can start with another lesson.
I want to start with the lesson Bending made easy because then i practice on bending and vibrato. In the Malmsteen made easy leson is also picking involved buit i practice that on a daily base in the shred bootcamp.
So i stop this lesson, start the bending lesson and also incorporate some sweep picking excersises from a book in my daily routine.
Ill keep you updated smile.gif the Malmsteen is in the Rec.

Have a nice new year mate and thank biggrin.gif

Hi mate! It's great to see you playing all those chords and riffs that clean! There are some moments, mostly in the second half that are sounding really groovy! There is still work to do in order to adjust timing, but you are getting close.

The first half tends to sound rushed. Focus on it when practicing.

Hey mate.

i've put the funk rhythm in the REC. i think that the first part is much better now.
I know its not perfect but ill want to go firther with another rhythm lesson to keep motivated smile.gif

I have sweep picking also in my daily routine now and it feels like it already pays off.
Im learning a sort of etude with 2 string mini sweeps. When i feel like its getting better i will record it for you so you can see if im doing the technique well :0

Before i start another lesson im gonna finish my reggae song and do another improvisation :0

I'll have to say that it feels like im making a huge progress since i have a solid practice routine and also stick with my routine tongue.gif

—-------------------------------
Hey mate.

This is one of the excersises i use for practicing the sweep picking. I also try 4 string and 3 string excersises.
I started at 60 bpm and this was 120 bpm. It was a little but too fast but just to give you an idea 😁

So thanks for al your help again.

Hi Tim! This is great! I also notice that you are progressing a lot! The hard work, and structure really pay off!

I'll grade your take at REC in a moment.

It's nice to see that you are already getting familiar with Sweep Picking technique. The most important thing that you need to work is timing. As SW is a natural technique, it can be easy to play it very fast, but the tricky part is to be precise with the tempo that you are working. Check your vid again and let me know if this makes sense.

Posted by: tflava Jan 8 2021, 01:10 PM

Hey mate for the up coming time i will focus besided my daily routine on 2 lessons. Funk fusion groove from Diego and malmsteen bending from ben.

I will try another way to practice the funk. Normally i learned the whole part in once and the practice slowly etc. Now i will try to focus on 1 part of the lesson. When i mastered it at 90 procent i will go on with part 2 and repeat part 1. I think that i focus more on the details if i try it this way.

The malmsteen is just to keep working on my bending vibrato and vibrato. I notice it is already improved but it is still a weakness so i want to do this lesson as last one for vibrato and then try to incoroporate it in my daily practice and improv.

i have send you the files for the collab. Im sorry but i couldnt get motivated to try another part so i will focus on next collab smile.gif

I've recorded a few things to show you. One sweep picking lick on different speed with metronome the way i practice it. Hope its the good way. Also the mini sweep etude part on 65 procent of full speed.

And today i tried the Legato lesson for the first time on full speed. It its too fast still so i keep going to practice on slower tempo's but its getting closer to full speed smile.gif

Have a nice weekend cool.gif

Hi mate! Thanks for the videos. Some feedback:

- 2 Strings Sweep Picking:

From what I can imagine here the rhythm pattern here seems to be based on triplets. However, you are not playing that rhythm. The first two notes are much shorter and the last of each pattern is longer.

Can you please share with me the original etude that you are using so I can give more specific feedback? Because if it's not based on triplets I would give a different feedback here.

- Sweep Picking practice:

This one is sounding tight. The timing is tight at slower tempos, but the faster tempos obviously need more time. I'm not convinced about your right hand movement, it's not consistent. You are doing some kind of random vertical movement which doesn't look natural. I also notice that it seems that you are still looking for the best way to to the motion and to anchor your palm. From my own experience and what I've seen in Sweep masters (like Malmsteen, Becker) is that the best is to do like a circle when doing sweep picking. You would do half of the circle when sweeping down, the other half when sweeping up (there is no sweep up in this case). However, this circle is very subtle. It can be exaggerated at first to get used but then it becomes very small.

Check some vids, for example this one: https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Masters-of-Sweeping/

- Legato:

The problem here are again the triplets. (faster part of each pattern). You are playing them faster and in some cases you end the pattern too early. Maybe you could practice this at a slower tempo, and using the guitar pro file so you fix this issue. But at first, please let me know if you notice what I say.

here is the sweep etude backing
 Backing_Track_Ex_3a.mp3 ( 1.19MB ) : 169

About the sweep picking excersice. i think i know what you mean. i recorded my hand i think the way you mean from different angles. What do you say? I didnt foxus on precision but on my hand placement.

I know what you mean with the triplets. I also notice that i have more diffcult with the second part so im gonna loop that with the guitar pro file.

Thanks for your feedback

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Jan 12 2021, 02:16 PM

Hi mate,

Yes, the sweeping etude is based on triplets so my feedback was right. smile.gif

Super thanks now i see it.
At the beginning your hole arm is going down and you anchor the palm in the bridge. Then the last 3 string is more the circle thing because you palm stau rested on the bridge.
This really help me. Thanks

Hey man.
Here a little update 😁

I just started with the fusion lesson from Diego and focussed on details. I learned 4 parts and now first want to master it before i go further.

Im also gonna split my schedule in 2 ways.
Schedule 1 is Technique and the gmc lesson.
Legato, SP, etc
Schedule 2 is improvisation.
Ear training, scales, 3 nps patterns.

I notice that if i start with the sweep picking or legato i go on and forget my improvisation. 🤣
So i think thiss will work.

Hi mate! Thanks for the update!

The plan looks great. It's very complete, and you are covering everything you need to achieve your current goals.

Keep the hard work!

Posted by: tflava Jan 19 2021, 09:40 PM

Hey mate.

I recorded some parts.
i recorded the legato. i notice that i have little motivation left for this lesson. So i think i will keep legato in my practice routine but practice some licks from a book what i have and practice every week 1 lick or 2 with a metronomen. Then i will try to incorporate the lick in my improvisations smile.gif

Im also working on another sweep picking etude with 3 string sweeps. I recorded the part at 75 procent of the speed. I try to change some excersises of it daily and it started to feel more comfortable. i notcied i have a lot of string noise but i lost my fret wrap and feel like i need it the most with the sweep picking excersises laugh.gif

And i started with the fusion grooves. here is a little preview of me playing it at 70 procent or something.

Thanks again mate.

Hi mate! Good stuff! It's great to see you working hard.

From what I can hear in your first two videos, I think that you are practicing these ones at an uncomfortable tempo. You need to slow them down, mostly the legato that still has issues in triplets, but also the sweep that is not sounding clean and tight. It's good to try a bit at uncomfortable tempos, but most of the time should be at you limit "tight" tempo.

However, if you are not enjoying these ones, you should continue playing them. There are lots of things to play on guitar, let's play those that we enjoy the more. If you don't want to lose the work that you've done with that legato lesson, maybe you can keep only the first two shapes for your diary practice (as exercises). Turn on a metronome and train a bit your legato. If not, improvising with some legato patterns is also good. Playing scale sequences over backing tracks really helped me to train my fingers. You can also incorporate any exercises (from figure 2 to 5) from this vid in your diary practice: https://youtu.be/JNDyI5b3Fh8

Finally, the Fusion Groove is definitely on the right track. I would keep the current tempo and try to make the riffs and grooves sound more consistent. Focus on the sound of each note, and dynamics.

Keep on the good job!!

Allright man thanks for the feedback. I notice by myself that im working too Long on 1 piece its difficult to keep motivated. Thats why i notice the shred bootcamp really works for me. It is practicing the hell out of 1 lick or pattern and then Move on to another lick. And because of that you see really the improvement and stay buissy every day but Dont get bored.

Maybe we can do the same with legato. I have a book from chris brooks where hé got legato practicing with similair excersises like the vid of satriani and also working on scale patterns and inversion. Maybe i van choose 1 or 2 licks. Just focus on it for 1 or 2 weeks. Work with the metronome, and at the end of the week ill send you a vid of me playing the lick in different speed. What do you say?

I think this way of practicing works for me. Besides that i keep going wmfurther with the fusion groove and stay in this tempo. I really dig the lesson, 😁

Allright cant say thanks enough any time for the help 👌

Hi Tim! smile.gif

Yes, that sounds good for me. I think that you should use the same bootcamp concept to learn and practicing everything. The key to master a solo is to work on small parts as loops/exercises. You can do this with the whole lesson or only with the trickier parts.

This is a page about the Art of Practicing on my favorite technique book ever (Speed Mechanics by Troy Stetina).

Posted by: tflava Jan 20 2021, 06:18 PM

Nice article man.
Before i learned a whole piece and then practice it but Since a couple of months i study different and notice more improvement.
However i really need to like something to continue with it. So i know that i need to improve my legato and the key is to repeat it. And to find excersises i like and think i can use.
But i found it 😁 today i started with my New practice routine of 1 day improvising and other day Technique.
Im working on 3 note per string patterns and also melodic minor. One of these days i try to record an improvisation 😁

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Jan 21 2021, 02:37 PM

Yeah, that makes sense. I also lose interested if I don't enjoy what I'm learning. As Troy says in the article, each guitarist is different and needs to find his own path.

You plan sounds promising, keep me updated!!

Hey mate,

Here is a new improvisation.
Its in phrygian and its metal so way out of my comfortzone but i had to give it a try wink.gif

I also joined the gmc naming collab it was fun smile.gif
BTW very cool new lesson. Think i will try it in the future. Good for my picking and working on 1 string.
have a nice day mate.

Hi mate! Great to see that you are moving out of your comfort zone! By now I think that you are using mostly the same rhythm when phrasing. What about getting more melodic here?

Some Phrygian Inspiration:

Posted by: tflava Jan 25 2021, 04:03 PM

Great song mate.
I will definitely try to be more melodic and try to phrase more like arpeggiating melodic lines then walking up and down the scale.
I will record it when i think its more melodic 😁
Thanks

Posted by: tflava Jan 26 2021, 02:05 PM

Hey man.

I started to workout some more melodic ideas today. What do you think of it.
I want to polis some things and work it more out but i think its gonna be cool 😎
What do you think?

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Jan 26 2021, 08:58 PM

Yes, this sounds more melodic and has more rhythm variation. The backing has some very defined rhythm patterns so it can be a bit more tricky to get out of it. But you are definitely on the right track now. smile.gif

Posted by: tflava Jan 27 2021, 01:17 PM

Thanks. Ill polis my ideas a bit more. And also work on the legato lick i come up with in the solo 😁

My New routine works very well.
I spend more time also on the sweep picking. I think 20 to 30 minutes a day. I practice it slow all the time but tries to burst up the speed a bit and recorded something. To my ears and feeling i think it keeps Getying better and it also feeks better at higher speed.

Here are tje recordings

Hi mate! Great job with this Sweeping! I can hear that you are really improving here. The sound and movement is very smooth here. Just be sure that you can control timing and economize right hand movements.

Cool to know that the new routine is working fine, keep me updated!

Hé mate.

I just started a few months ago with trying to learn to mix.
Iv read a book from mike senior and its very good.
Im working on a reggae song which i want to put in Spotify eventually.
Can i send you the raw mix so you can hear the progress and maybe have some advice in the end?
The brass section aand drums are now played with midi but they gonna be played live.

If its ok i send you the file with we transfer.

Allright thanks.
I, ve sended it 😁
In the future my goal is also to arrange some more music or maling songs.
Im now also working on a rock song for my other band.
Its just starring so just working out some ideas and maybe its gonna work out the way I want 😅👍

Hi mate! I've now listening to the Reggae track.

Nice song! This sounds very good. I'll give you some general comments to help you to continue improving the mix, but have in mind that you should make subtle changes, not drastic ones. I think that this is on the right track but it still needs work regarding instrument's compression and EQ. Sometimes the bass is missed, or lacks some definition. And the guitars maybe are too open (pan). I feel that there is some work to do to make drums, bass and guitars go better together (maybe working on ambience?, EQ and Comp).

Maybe vocals are a bit loud (mostly in the chorus).

At this point, I would choose a reference track to polish these details. Do you have a reference track?

EDIT: Now I noticed that you said that you'll record live drums for this one. This will make a huge difference regarding the overall ambience and feel.

Posted by: tflava Jan 29 2021, 03:54 PM

Hé mate.

Thanks for your advice.
I have not done anything with compression yet because i wait for the drums and then i want to start fresh.
I think then i will make a basic mix and also start with the compression. I will send you it then so you can follow the progress 😊
Is it also normal to group the drum, bass and guitar together to glue it with compression.

Thanks that your willing to help with this. Its just a new sort of thing in music where i have to begin from the beginning. But i think every one can learn things if your willing to put time and effort in 😁

Ill keep you updated

Hey mate.

I worked the phrygian improvisation out and recorded it with my audio interface smile.gif

I also recorded my legato licks that i practiced.
Curious what you think wink.gif

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Feb 2 2021, 02:56 PM

Hi Tim! Good stuff here.

Your Phrygian improvisation has improved a lot man! Great technique, tone and timing! If you decide to continue experimenting with this one I would try to relax a bit the repetitive connection with the rhythm and chord changes. I feel that the solo is moving exactly as the backing at every moment and it becomes rhythmically predictable. Does it make sense?

The backing's rhythm is very marked and that it can be tricky to get out of it... maybe it's impossible, but that's what I feel by now. Some things that I would try:

- Make that phrases start on one chord and continue to the other.
- Use longer notes.
- Avoid making the silences at the same time than the drums.
- Try other rhythms.

Please let me know if this makes sense to you.

Regarding the legato, your technique looks and sound good, but you are not going tight with the metronome. You should start slower, but maybe double the beat. This means that instead of playing over 80bpm, you would play over 160bpm so you can have more subdivisions. And as I think that you are a bit fast, you could start at 145 or 150 bpm. What do you think?

Posted by: tflava Feb 2 2021, 08:23 PM

Hey mate,

It makes perfectly sense smile.gif
I think i will try the things you said. The backing is indeed diffcult but i will give it a try smile.gif

IAbout the legato. thats a good tip to play the metronome hogher and play 8th notes instead of 16th. i will focus on 2 new licks for one week or so and the move on.

I also recorded the fusion grooves.
It feels ok till 90 Bpm or so. I made a vide where i play at 80, 90 and 100 procent.
The normal speed is very fast but ill practice the fast part every day.

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Feb 3 2021, 03:00 PM

Hi mate! Godo job with this funky lesson! I can see that you are getting more familiar with all those tricky grooves. I think that it's helpful to work at these different tempos, not only at 100 %, because it allows you to focus on different elements. You are on the right track, keep going!

Regarding the improvisation... yes, it's not an easy backing. Consider moving to another Phrygian backing that allows you experiment more with the rhythm.

And about legato, that sounds great!

Posted by: tflava Feb 7 2021, 10:11 PM

Hey mate,

I've made some new record with the fusion grooves and it felt much better. I thought i wanted to put this one in the REC so posted it there smile.gif

I've also recorded a sweep picking excersise again. im continuing with another now. I notice that it also helps me in my regular playing with using small sweeps and economy picking so thats nice cool.gif

Ive also recorded some melodic minor improvisation. This is totally new for me so i try to get the sound of the scale in my ears and the patterns and intervals of the scale. So it isnt that much melodic but i tried to focus on playing around some ideas and some pattersn. Have a nice evening:)

Ps now the day after i watch again and i noticed that in Diego vid you Dont hear the scratches between the chords so much. Maybe i have to use less conmpresson. I also notice that he use smaller scratches between and have less hand movement and accent more the chords that are played.
Am i Wright with this? So yes i will try to focus on this movement this week 😊👌

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Feb 8 2021, 03:17 PM

Hi mate! I've just commented at the REC program! Sorry if I'm being too strict or demanding with my feedback. My only goal is to help you get the most of my comments for your practice. Let me know if you have any question about it!

Regarding your vids here. I think that the Sweep Picking practice also needs to be slowed down. The sweeps are not sounding tight and clean. If you keep playing at this tempo you will get used to bad habits and the only thing that you'll get is to play faster and faster something that sounds unclean. For this reason I recommend you 3 things:

- Isolate your right hand movement (mute the strings with your left hand) and try to play it the faster that you can. Practice the movement as a loop.
- Take only one sweep and play it as a loop trying to replicate the mechanics that you use when playing only with one hand.
- Practice the whole thing at a more comfortable tempo so you can put both hands in sync and get a clean and tight sweep.

Finally, it's nice to hear you experimenting with Melodic Minor scale. I've enjoyed your jam. Keep on experimenting with it and check out some cool melodic minor solos at GMC to get inspiration! smile.gif

Posted by: tflava Feb 8 2021, 03:28 PM

Hey mate.

Thanks for the feedback. Its not too strict. Sometimes i want to go too fast and need to relaxx more so it helps 😁
I have problems getting the tone of Diego also and it felt my tone is too harsh. I think i will try it with my amp next time. I will focus more on groove and details then and Dont go faster till 90 procent then. Once i get a solid 90 procent take i will try to go faster.

About the sweep. I practice it alle the time slower but because the backing track is this fast i have some weird thing in my head that says ill have to do it that speed till i Move on but i think ill have to let that thought go and focuss on staying clean and relaxx.

I think i will also start with your one string metal solo too focus next to rhythm also on lead. I really enjoy that solo 😎

At last i continue working with melodic minor to get the patterns and sound and repating the 3nps patterns.

I keep you updated and thanks for the patience. Feedback is hard to get sometimes but its the thing that we need to make us better 😁👌

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Feb 9 2021, 02:41 PM

Cool Tim!

Yes, it's good to practice at fast tempos for some minutes but it's important to put both hands on sync. We've been talking about this with Phil and Troy (Stetina) at GMC facebook group. Troy suggested that idea of isolating hands and working on each hand at fast tempo to practice and get used to the mechanics needed for fast tempos. I think that this is a very good tip.

Everything sounds good here! Keep on the good job!!

Posted by: tflava Feb 10 2021, 02:05 PM

Allright mate.
If also learned 2 new lessons. Shuffle rock and rock ESSENTIALS 6. And im gonna learn one string metal. Then i have a list of lessons i can play trough every day to keep things interested and get the groove inside because of practicing more weeks.

Here is a vid of 70 bpm of shuffle rock

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Feb 10 2021, 03:07 PM

Great!! Nice to see you playing it at a slow tempo! wink.gif

I recommend you to continue practicing at this tempo and focus on:

- Polish the intro fast passage. There are some hand sync issues here.
- Adjust timing. There are some moments where you rush the tempo. Sometimes it's more difficult to play tight at slow tempos than faster one, but working on it is a great workout.
- Work on groove. Try to move your head and body while playing. Relax your right hand and let it go more with the groove. This will also help with dynamics.

Are you also going to work on One string metal solo?? Awesome!! smile.gif

Posted by: tflava Feb 14 2021, 10:07 PM

Hey mate,

I recorded 2 legato licks in different tempo's. i played them like you said in eight notes.

Im currently working on 4 lessons and learn one more so ic an repeat that every day as a routine and to get the groove going.
With the funk fusion grooves i think i learned the second part better now with the rhythms.
I think next week i will record again so you can (hopefully wink.gif) see progress.

Have a nice evening wink.gif

hey mate i'm learning your metal solo at the moment and in part 2 is divided in 2 parts. the legato part and the triplet feel. If i look at your tab the triplet feel is played without hammer-ons but if i look at you're hand in slow motion it looks like you are doing pull ofs in triplets. Is this right or did i see it wrong?
here is a vid of how i think i have to play it and you play it:)

Thanks smile.gif

Hi Tim! Great stuff!

The legato exercises are very cool. You need to minimize your left hand movements, try to keep the fingers closer to the fretboard. This problem appears at 120, but it's not an issue, you can play at this tempo with that extra movement, however, you have issues with speed and cleanness at faster tempos, and this is the main reason (Besides that you need more time of practice). Pay attention to this, and off course to timing. The sound of your legato is good at slower tempos.

Nice to see you learning the one string solo! biggrin.gif You are right about part 2, I'll fix the tabs there. Your playing is on the right track here. There are just a few parts that need special attention:

- Your timing at 00:14 (those 16th legatos)
- Timing at 00:24
- The last AP passage.

Keep on the good job!

Posted by: tflava Feb 16 2021, 08:41 AM

Allright mate thanks. Im going to start with 2 new legato licks for the up coming 1 or 2 weeks. I will focus specifically on keeping my fingers close to the strings and fretboard. Once it feeks good ik going to increase speed gradually then.

I keep playing the other lessons. My waza tube expander is coming today and cant wait to test it and record with it. Hope that i van record a lesson this week to know how it sounds in a mix 👌
Thanks for your help mate

Perfect! Nice to know about the Waza! Then tell me what you think of it! wink.gif

Posted by: tflava Feb 18 2021, 03:12 PM

Hey mate.

I had a day off from work today and played whole day long with my waza tube ampa expander and also recorded a lot.
i'll have to say im very excited about it and it feels fantastic. the attenuation side is really good but also the recorindg stuff feels so much better. Im also record know useing the sound of my speakers mixed with the sound of my tube amp.
I also feel like maybe some recs are ok for the REC zone, just let me know wink.gif
The funk fusion grooves i want to put in the REC because the other guys can see that i work hard on it. And it also felt a lot better especially the second part. I practiced hard last 2 weeks on it.
Her they come smile.gif

The dire straits inspired lesson. i recorded it using the IR loader of the Waza and uses a celestion G12 x35 212 closed cab.

Here is the shuffle rock track from Guido. On the sigle note part in the middel there are some high frequencies that make noise but i dont figured out how to cut it with the EQ.

Here is the rock essentials. I played it with my revivaldrive and used an celestion G12 greenback IR 412 cabinet but i think it was better to use a 212 or something.

I know its a lot but i was really enjoying playing and recording the whole day cool.gif

thanks mate.

Hi Tim!! Great stuff here!!

Did you mean that you are adding some camera audio into the video mix? From my point of view this vids sound great. Your tone sounds very good. I would continue tweaking EQ but the quality is great!

That Dire Straits lesson sounds very cool. I've really enjoyed your tone and playing there. And you already know that I love that guitar! The beginning chords need some groove and articulation adjustment, and then, the whole lesson has room to work on timing and dynamics. Piotr's tone is a bit warmer, maybe you can adjust a bit your EQ but also try to get the tone from your picking. (where you pick, how, how much strength, etc.)

This new Shuffle Rock take sounds better than the previous take that you did. I think that your timing is better, and that the riffs are now sounding more natural and groovier. I hear those noises, (Are you talking about the high notes at 00:41?). I think that this should be fixed with muting, not EQ.

The rock essentials is also on the right track. This one sounds a bit "hurried" at least in this take. There are also some small sections, like the one at 00:18 that can sound cleaner (more defined). Your tone is on the same vein than the original lesson but I feel that it's the poorest of these three videos. I would continue polishing it.

Regarding REC, you can always share takes there, even if they are on progress. That's the best way to receive feedback from different instructors and get different points of view.

Hey mate.

No sorry. I mean that in the roon where i play i hear my amp sound but also out of my speaker. Ill have the tube expander with line out to my interface and to my studio monitors. So while i play and revord ill hear my straight amp tone from my speakers but also the amp sound over my studio monitors soo thats really great

Thanks. Yes ill love the guutar. I will focus on the beginning chords and try to get a fuller tone from my finger also. I will experiment with the articulation

And yes i mean the high notes. It sounds like there is some feedback in between when im not playing from my pickups. However of i keep my palm planted i don't think youll hear it but not all the notes are muted so maybe i can try to use less gain or put my volume a little back. I will put this one on the Rec also then

Allright ill continue polishing the rock track and also look for better tone on that track.

Ill keep playing al the lessons its nice for daily routine also besides all the other stuff.
Im really enjoying your metal solo but have to practice more to record it
One of these days i will start with the santana solo smooth also for the routine.

Im done for today . Thanks for all manm really apreciate it

—-------------------------------------------------------

Hey mate.

Ill have a honest question to you. Do you think i practice too much above my ability? Because i think om trying not to. I really love the lessons of Diego and know ill never get the Technique he have but i just need to try some lessons of him sometimes.
Of all the lessons im learning now this one feel like its the most above my ability. The Guido lesson i think only the start is diffcult but i came with the lesson on listening it trough my Phone. Later on i Saw it was level 7 because i didnt thought that before. Your metal solo is diffcult but i think i can handle it.
Ill also try to work on the feedback you all give to me. Ill focus 20 minutes on picking of the bootcamp every day for 4 months already. Ill focus on SP and also in legato and improvising etc.
Sometimes i doubt if i learn the good way. I think i am and i know sometimes i have to slow myself down because i want to learn everything

But i think im in the right track but om curious about what you think. If you also think i choose lessons that are too demanding ill stop with it then and try more easy lessons. However sometimes i need to try something i really want just to give it a try.

However im willing to change things if that is what i need.

Greetz man

Hi Tim!

I don't think that there is a problem if you decide going for difficult lessons. If this makes you keep on practicing and pushing your playing, that's a good thing. However, there are some important things and ideas that come to mind:

- The most important thing is something that I've already told you. You need to avoid practicing too much at fast tempos if you are not being able to control and polish your technique. The idea is that you practice at a comfortable tempo with both hands, and if possible at a higher (push limit) tempo isolating each hand.

- Secondly, I think that you could add some easier workouts or lessons based on the one that you are trying to master in order to have complementary exercises and find some kind of more gradual path. For example, if you want to master that Diego's Funk lesson, what about looking for other easier Diego's funk lessons that build like a path. If you don't find them, you can go for other instructors. (Stephane has good funk workouts).

- Finally, lesson levels are very subjetive because it always depends on which are our strength and weak points. Maybe we can play a level 8 alternate picking lesson or metal lesson, but we can't master a level 5 funk lesson. So take lesson level just as an extra info about them.

I think that you are practicing in the right way. Sometimes you rush a bit (work on too fast tempos) but recently you've fixed this. I'm also noticing that your playing is evolving really well, and that you are very motivated, which is the most important thing.

Posted by: tflava Feb 20 2021, 08:39 AM

Allright mate thanks.
Sometimes it van be overwhelming what is the right way.
I try really to focus too not play to fast lately and only sometimes pushing it 😃

I will also look for a complementair funk lesson then which is some easier but i think i can play the Diego funk also better if i keep practicing it for some weeks 👍

BTW really cool licks you play in the new lesson. Awesome i really love that style. What is it, fusion rock or something?

Greetz

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Feb 21 2021, 01:22 AM

Great!! We can always review and adjust your guitar plan so please always share your thoughts and experience with your daily practice.

Nice to know that you liked my new lesson! The style is some kind of instrumental modern rock/metal. Kiko is a very versatile guitarist, but in this new album he explored the most modern side of instrumental rock/metal. He obviously has influences by guys like Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, and John Petrucci, but he also incorporated sounds by more modern artists like Plini and Periphery. If you enjoy that song, you'll enjoy his recent album and also some of these:

Nick Johnston - Remarkably Human & Atomic Mind.
Guthrie Govan - Erotic Cakes
Plini - Impulse Voices

And maybe Polyphia, Owane, and Jack Gardiner.

Posted by: tflava Feb 22 2021, 09:38 PM

Hey mate,

very nice. I listened to Plini and its a nice sound. i like the music where people play very tastefull melodic lines in combinations with some shredding sometimes.
I already knew the album erotic cakes of guthrie Govan and i love it. Only sometimes he is shredding a bit to much to my taste but it depends on the song smile.gif
Wil definitely listen tot hte other players you mentioned.

Today i recorded a Blues improv. I comped the backing with a trick i learned from another course ill have. I play the V minor before the chord it supposed to.

These days i will also go further with a latin improv. Ill have to say that i had lack of inspiration this day but ill had to try it anyway wink.gif

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Feb 23 2021, 04:13 PM

Cool! I think that you'll love Nick Johnston. Check it out!!

That's a nice blues improv and like your phrasing, rhythm and how you move all along the fretboard. I notice that you are using G blues scale. Have you ever experimented with other concepts in order to follow the chords?

Posted by: tflava Feb 23 2021, 07:10 PM

Thanks. I will listen and let you know!

At first i wanted to improvise using arpeghios of the minor chords and the major and maybe use extension like the 9th and 13. But because the chords moves fast i only used the blues scale and sometimes used a note from the compositie scale. On my next blues improvisation i will try to follow the chords more. And maybe use the mixolydian mode changing each chord.

Which concepts did you mean? Then i will try that also next time with my blues improv.

I will focus on a latin 2-5 groove for next time and focus on comping and soloing. Then after that one im gonna dive in the complex harmony with altered V and secondary dominant so i can try to incorporate the melodic minor and altered scale. Cant wait for that 😁 but one thing at a time.

I also recorded the drums for my reggae song so will mix that also these days. We only not had overhead mics so maybe i use an sample for the crash. I will send it to you when its ready.

Have a nice day mate

From what I can hear, this is a dominant blues. The first ideas that come to mind are:

- Combining major and minor pentatonics.
- Following the chords with dominant arpeggios.
- Following the chords with Mixolydian modes.

I would consider these ideas like 3 levels. The first one, using only pentatonic, is cool to start. You can try playing G major pentatonic over I, and G blues scale over the other two chords.

The second level, playing arpeggios, is cool to get used to the chord tones, so then you can target them easy while using the previous idea. (pentatonics)

Allright man. Sounds like a real cool plan.
I will focus on this next to the latin improv for the upcoming weeks then 🙂 let you know the progress and thanks for thinking with me

Allright. Very cool mate and that you take the time to record this for me 😊
I will search for a little slower dominant blues where i will practice all those concepts and mix them.
Maybe i can change the concept after each chorus so you can really see if i understand the concept 😁
Thanks a lot man 👌

I also made a new Vid of the 2 legato licks i practiced. I tried to focuss on keeping my hand near the fretboard in an efficient way. Hope this is better then the previous smile.gif

I will try to keep my hand as close at the fretboard as you did.
i noticed that my pinky is the most difficult but i will pratice slow.

I also recorded the dire straist again.
I notice that with the vibrato i'm pushing hard. Is it better to keep the finger relaxx and don't push to hard?
My vibrato improved last weeks but if im looking at other its not where i want it to be. I will try to use less tebsion in my ringers and see how that works 😁

Ill have to say this kind of vids are really helpful. I agree with what phill said . That this Could be a great adition to the normal feedback where you guts van charge some extra for.
I would definitely willing to pay for it 😊

Hey mate,

If put the dire straits and the rock from Darius in the Rec zone.
With the dire straits i focussed on the middle lick after the sixths in double stops. I think its better now. I focused also on dynamics. But im done with this lesson so i can focus on the other ones.

With the darius rock i tried to get a better tone and more defined riffs. hope its better like this.

im still working on the metal solo, shuffle and diego funk lesson smile.gif

GREAT mate! I graded and gave feedback there!

Posted by: tflava Mar 7 2021, 09:23 PM

Hello mate.

I just recorded some things.

I recorded the one string metal solo. I think i did a decent job. Is it good enough to put in the REC you think?

I also made a recording of a blues improvisation where i tried to incorporate the concepts you said to me before.
I only praticed this concepts in 2 area's but i want to practice it till i know it on all 5 area's.
The concepts i tried were these:

Concept 1-- 1 chord major- 4, 5 chord minor
Concept 2: Blues scale
Concept 3: Arpeggios's
Concept 4: Mixolydian

im still practicing the legato stuff. i also started a new lesson which i reall like.

Allright thanks mate.

Posted by: tflava Mar 8 2021, 08:17 PM

Allright mate thanks a lot.
i will work on the excersise this week of the fast lick you gave me smile.gif

About the concepts i will continue with it and also move up one area on the neck cool.gif
I notice that im focussing on this ill be focussing less on phrasing and rhythm but it will come afterwards when i can play it freely i think smile.gif
Anout a blues lesson. There is a blues lesson i found which i'd really like so when i have time for it i will focus on it .
The lesson im started is the Diego 2-5-1 modern rock examples and as a rhythm lesson im gonna start the Diego hendrix rhythm lesson. That lesson has really great dynamics and i love it so iwll give it a try.
At the meantime i practice the funk lesson every day and give it a shot one of these days.

I also practiced a sweep picking mini etude for the past couple of weeks.
Here is a vid of me playing it. I tried not to speed to much up and focus on clean playing. This was the max speed i could play (almost clean). Now i will focus on a new etude for upcoming weeks. Thanks again mate!

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Mar 9 2021, 03:16 PM

Hi Tim! All this sounds good! Diego's lessons are excellent choices.

Do you have a link to listen to the original sweep etude?

Posted by: tflava Mar 9 2021, 07:33 PM

Hey mate,

yes here is the original. That one is much faster then i play it but i tried not to rush wink.gif

 Example_3d.mp3 ( 1.21MB ) : 163

This one im gonna practice upcoming weeks :  Example_3e.mp3 ( 1.26MB ) : 162

Maybe you have some advice for the collab also? I posted a quick demo of some ideas im working on.
I tried to focus on the lydian style arpeggios's with the #4 with the tapping and arps under the F chord.
I will work on it more to find some cool lines

good ideas.
I will continue exploring the backing and the lines and use hwat you said.
I will try to focus on playing the line trought the change instead of right on the change.

I also send you my reggae track. Its my final mix before i want to let it mastering by someone.
Do you have any last advice to change or work a bit more on before letting it master?
I send the fil with wetransfer.

thanks mate.

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Mar 11 2021, 02:33 PM

Hi Tim, here I'm listening!

The mix is very clear and balanced. You did a very good job.

The only thing that I don't enjoy is hi hat, it's too present and I feel that it's lacking some ambience to make it related more with the drums and overall mix. I would set it a bit lower and add some more room rev.

Bass could have a bit more presence, but it can be a matter of taste.

Well done!

Posted by: tflava Mar 12 2021, 12:54 PM

Allright mate. Really thanks for your advice.
I will change it and then let some one master it.
Then i finally can close it 😁
Thanks al lot.

Mixes are never finished, they are abandoned. laugh.gif

Posted by: tflava Mar 13 2021, 09:03 PM

Hahah thats a good way of looking at it smile.gif

I dropped 3 lessons in the REC zone.
I want to stop with the funk lessons and focus on other lessons smile.gif
i practiced the fast lick from your metal solo every day with the metronome. i think thiss take is a bit better then the other smile.gif However the fast lick isnt still in perfect sync but ill continu with my daily work from the shred bootcamp.
Lately i had less time to work on the legato and other stuff so i wanted to close some lessons to clear my head and Move on with the other stuff

Hey mate.

I tried to put more rest in the collab improv.
What do you think of it now?
Its nog good enough but i changed some things.
The second lick the timing is not good also but just some general ideas.

Ive also have another post before this one smile.gif
Sorry had a Long practice day and a lot in my mind. Then it helps to drop it smile.gif

Posted by: tflava Mar 16 2021, 11:05 AM

Hey mate.

I read all your comments and listened to the video's.
I think i have to slow myself a bit down at this moment.
I will practice the metal lick with a metronome and will record it some day.
I will also practice the 4 chromatic notes on lower strings.
I know i can handle the speed of the advanced rock shuffle in the beginning but i am practicing too much things at once right now.
I will quit that lesson. So i have good quality practice time.
Ill continu the 2 lessons im working on right know but at slow pace.

I know that i am working hard and practice a lot of things also the right way. This lesson i rushes because i wanted to close lesson to clear my head and focus more.

I continue polishing the collab idea. Thanks for your advice.

So thats my plan now 😁

Greetz

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Mar 16 2021, 02:40 PM

The plan sounds good to me. Less is more.

I don't think that you wasted time, all the practice time is positive, but we need to adjust our routines from time to time to get the most of them.

Keep me updated!

Posted by: tflava Mar 18 2021, 05:57 PM

Hey mate.

I changed the collab idea a bit like you said. This is wat i got now. I will try to polis it some more like the bends and vibrato.

When is de deadline?
Maybe i work some more slow melodic lines out 🤘

Thanks gab. What is the best way to get that tone?
Compressor into distortion and then delay.
Or a tube screamer style pedal in a distortion?
Or a booster in a distortion pedal? 😅

I will try to get it

I practice the metal week all week Long and it worked out when i practiced it.

I wanted to try one more time but now practice further with other AP licks.

Posted by: tflava Mar 28 2021, 08:23 PM

Hey mate,

Im back with some short Vids.

First one is legato in triplets or sextuplets. Its basically scale shapes.
I know my hands are not that close to the fretboard but i tryu to focus on it. My pinky wont agree with me tongue.gif
I hink this sound more precise and clean then the vid before.

Im also incorporated some tapping excersises in my routine where i switcehd between 2 patterns and melted them together.

At last i have a n improvisation where my main focus was on playing with chromatisism.

It feels like i have a good routine again. Im also working on hybrid picking in my routine.
The 2 lessons from diego that im learning starting too feel good also.
Maybe i can record one this week to show you.

Thats it for now.
Thanks again mate.

Hey mate.

Here is a funk improvisation over an arrangement in working on. I recorded all the parts.
But i was jamming on this song and focussed on some strange unusual things.
In the first part i used dorian and try to superimpose some chords over.
In the second part i tried to use lydian dominant and mixolydian because the song modulates there.
And on the last chord i tried to use the altered scale.

So its a lot of stuff im not used to but i thought i have to train it and give it a try 🙂

Curious what you think

Greetz tim

Yes man i think your right. Ill have yo focus on one thing st a time smile.gif
I think i will sing some lines and try to play that and focuss on new scales or something on a static chord that i don't have to think to much and can focus on phrasing.

What do you think of the arrangement itself?
I played all the parts myself.

Greetz

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Hey mate.

Iv made a (i think) real nice solo on my funk arrangement which i will try to record tonight.
Then afterwards i plotted out which notes i played againts the chords and which sound really nice so i can make my own vocabulary of what works for me.
I will send you my notes also when im ready

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Apr 10 2021, 05:35 PM

Hi mate! I missed the part that say you created the arrangement! Great to see you experimenting with some funk backings as well. I like it, everything sounds well played and in tune. If you want to continue improving this type of stuff I recommend you to check some funky music and try to emulate drum fills and bass arrangements.

Looking forward your new solo! smile.gif

Posted by: tflava Apr 11 2021, 09:16 AM

Hey mate,

Here is the solo.
Im still working on the arrangement as a whole.
The progression i made is:
The progression is:
Dm9- D7sus4-Dm9- D7sus 4
F7/6 add11- C7sus4-F7/6 add11
Cm7/Bm7/Bbm7/Am7--- E7b9b6

I also founded out the notes i liked but at the end of the arrangement when everything is ready i sent you the whole viud and my notes smile.gif

Im really sure that its a dm9 the first chord but i will also send you the vid where im playing the rhythm 😁
I try to make the lead some smoother and come up with some variatons on the almost end part.

I will focus after on the new collab and try to analyse what my option are. Maybe i can share it with you what i think 🙂

I also had my doubt about the high bubble guitar and also the high synth lead what you mentioned.
Maybe i will change it but then i have to arrange al the vids again

Posted by: tflava Apr 19 2021, 04:55 PM

Hey mate.

What you said make sense. I think i practice the Wrong way because i learn the song, play it and then forget it.
I have trouble remembering it and internalising it.
I think for me its better to train Small Technique excersises for 1 week with the metronome. Like hybrid picking, sweep, legato etc. And improvise over backing tracks and make kg own. Then maybe learn one or 2 licks and use them. Maybe i remember it that way and keep motivated.

Im also gonna start with my bands again so need to learn those songs and Dont have much time for gmc lessons.

Thanks mate

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Apr 19 2021, 06:37 PM

Yes, that sounds good. You can get a lot from GMC lessons but you really need to go deep with the lessons. One thing that always helped me is to learn a lesson (or solo) and then improvise over the backing track with a combination of the original licks, variations and my own stuff. The Jamtracks included are very effective for this purpose.

Hey mate,

how are you?
Im working on 2 new arrangements and as i said im gonna involve you from the beginning smile.gif

One is a phrygian dominant progression where im using my new valhalla plugins and they are great.
I now did the slow part. After this i want to play with some distortion and i have a nice progression in mind but this was the first idea i made today. So i need to arrange it with lots of other stuff.

And the country i recorded fast some rhythm guitar and the bass.

Curious what you think. So the upcoming time im working on my technique, improvisation and some arrangements smile.gif

Have a nice day.

Posted by: tflava Apr 22 2021, 04:43 PM

Hey mate.

Im glad you liked it. The progression that is in 6/8 stays also in E hrygian dominant but i start in the Dm7.

The progression is:
Dm7- Cmaj7#5- Bm7b5- E7#5
I don't play the full chords with the guitar. In the second chord i play an E triad over an C bass. I get this chords by the harminization of the Harmonic minor scale and looked at it from mode 5.
On both progressions my goal is just to make an arrangement without vocals. I will use guitar and maybe other instruments. On this way I try to implement the theory i learned and i want to learn licks over it and improvising over it. In the future i will try to solo more vertically.
But i also love different styles so try to arrange different styles so i learn to use them and i corporate it in my playing.

IT is funny what you said about the country progressions. In the past i did an carribean vibe arrangement and i used midi guitar. So i played the steel pan with my guitar and also the brass section smile.gif

This is the arrangement i made then smile.gif

But this is what i want to do more so ill keep you updated smile.gif

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Apr 23 2021, 03:34 PM

Nice mate! Everything sounds very good. The key is consistence. The more you do, the better you'll become. It's awesome to see your evolution just by comparing that caribean track with the new ideas.

For the country track, I recommend you to explore and listen more music in this style so you get ideas on arrangements, and also instruments sound. For example, this album:

i studied a travis picking rhythm. Its not perfect but wanted to show you what i was doing.
Also made an country improv over my country arrangement.
I will explore more and use the best ideas for the end smile.gif

Im also working on a very nice hendrix/cropper style rhythm but firs i want to continu with the arrangements im working on and then working that one out smile.gif

Hey mate.

Thanks for the feedback. This was just a jam over the country progression. I will shorten the solo and use the best parts smile.gif
With the travis picking i practiced it slower but sometimes i want to go too fast so im glad you mentioned it :B

Here is an improvisation of a lydian track i was jamming on. I learned 3 licks and the rest is improvisation. I think if i listen back to it it could be more melodical.

I also worked this night on my phrygian dominant arrangement. In the first part i recorded 4 guitars who play the same only the roots and the 3ths and 2 guitars an octave higher.
i also made an idea for the solo and quickly record it. now i have to polish it. i also made a last part which is more metal. there i want to make a real nice heavy metal sort of solo.

Hey mate how are you?
This week i will make the country backing track online.

For now i recored an improvisation where i focused on chord tones.
The progression was G-D-C-G-Am-C-D
I focussed on chord tones or hit the chord tones and then the pentatonic. for example on c chord c hord tones and c pentatonic.
For Am A minor chord tones and am pentatonic.
i started to feel more comfortable finding all the arpeggios over the track.
Sometimes i also blended in the whole G major scale.

He wrote the lyrics and we composed the song together.
IT was me singing smile.gif
I will polis the guitar solo some more. I will also focus on the bass drum and we need to mix and master the song.

i will try to sing more. my band also start again and im singing also in my reggae band so i keep on practicing.

i recorded 2 things.

A latin improv where i play lead and comp. With the comping i tried to create interseting parts and also use altered dominants on the V chord.
With the lead part i treid to use sometimes the A altered scale and the A phrygian dominant scale on the V chord.

i also created a solo idea over the fast phrygian part of my arrangement. i recorded it so i can know what to play and polish smile.gif
I will focus on polishing the solo for the coming week and then try to record it in the arrangement.

What do you think of the ideas?
Maybe i alos try the begin part but today i foccused on these 2 parts. I tried to not begin on the first beat every time and put some thyhmic interest in the slower stuff.

I will focus on the Dynamics for the first part and use less drive.
Second part i will let it breath more. Thanks for your advice mate.

What did you thought of the collab take?

I know i Could have worked more on the details like vibrato and stuff but i didnt had the time but still wanted to participate the collab.
But i like the note choice of it myself smile.gif

I have almost holidat and the wsnt to record something every day smile.gif

Thanks again mate and nice evening

Hi Tim! How are you? There is no video response today because I'm not feeling very well. But the good news is that I've received the first vaccine today. biggrin.gif

This is my (personal) opinion about you solo:

The composition is really good! I like your note choices, and your overall playing is good.

I'll give you some more detailed feedback here:

00:02 to 00:06: This beginning is so tasty! I can feel Slash vibes in the slow bend at 00:04. And then you end the phrase very well with a beautiful staccato note. This is perfect mate!

00:08 to 00:22: Here you introduce a new motif, and then repeat it in a higher range. I feel that you could play it with more groove, but it's ok. Then, at 00:13, the slow bending gets back and you solo feels great again. I like how you connect all these bends, and my favorite is the one at 00:18. That one is slower and very expressive. The final phrase could be more interesting, but it's ok, it works.

00:23 to 00:33: I love how this parts starts. The backing track grows, and you solo becomes more intense. I feel that the second half of this section could be more powerful. As it happened in some of your previous solos, I think that the second part has some phrases that have to many notes, I would prefer shorter passages.

00:33 to 00:44: The part that goes from 00:33 to 00:38 is very enjoyable. You played it with a very nice feel, the groove and dynamics there are great. I like the rock licks that start at 00:39, but I think that the part could sound smoother. Not sure about the change of rhythm there. But it's not bad! Also, there is a cool bend in the end.

Ok mate, that's all by now. Looking forward to your take for the Creativity Workout!!

Hey mate,

thanks a lot for the feedback.
ill hope you feeling ok again smile.gif
I also got the first vaccine and i get 5 august the second.
And its nice because i have to gig at 7,8 and 9 august smile.gif

Im trying a new way to visualise the fretboard now. i try to see the intervals i play so i can maken conscious note choices. Its difficult and takes up a lot of time but i think in tghe future it can make a huge different. So that i can choose to play the 6 or flat 7 of the chord and dont only use my ears or arpeggios smile.gif

For now im still buissy with working out all the songs for my band but i think within 1 or 2 weeks i can start my pratice routine again and workout all the things im working on and go further with my fusion study smile.gif

Hev nice days mate !

That's a wise move mate. The more we know the fretboard, the more we know the possible routes. It makes everything easier, it gives much more options. It's the way to go.

Hey mate ho w are you?

Im studying the diminsehd scale and try to improvise with it on a G7 chords.
It isnt that musical but i try to incorporate it in my playing and get the sound and scale in my fingers and ears.
So at the beginning i overplay it but just wanted to share with you smile.gif

Hi Tim! Everything is good here, how are you doing?

I've just shared my response to your tune at the Creativity Workout. Check it out!

It's nice to see that you are working on your fusion style. This jam sounds good. I can get some Scofield vibes there. Once you start feeling more comfortable with the scale, you can start working on your phrasing. But this is very promising!

Well done.

Posted by: tflava Jul 12 2021, 08:03 PM

Hé mate.

I recorded a blues where i tried to bring in a little diminshed stuff but where i mainly focussed in the Second part in chromatic notes.
I think that i now see when i can play 3 chromatic notes or 4 depending on which place i start on the beat smile.gif

The quality of the sound isnt that good but i wanted to still show you.
At the end my wife is in the screen. She didnt knew i was filming haha. She said " if you go upstairs why don't you take something with you from the stairs" laugh.gif

She is pregnant also so im gonna be father again smile.gif

Nice response on my emotive rock collab take. reall like it.
I have another nice idea for the emotive rock collab can i also record a second take?

I recorded a blues jam today. I play the comping and lead.
the first phrase was a studied phrase and 1 or 2 in the middle the rest was improvised smile.gif
What do you say?

Thanks again. Really enjoying all the collab stuff lately laugh.gif

Hé mate thanks for the feedback and im glad you liked the Second take.
I tried to focus on my phrasing. The lick around 0.20 seconds i tried to play slightly behind the beat to give it a dramatic effect.
At the end it isnt the best playing but i wanted to play some legato as a practice. I use a 12 note sequence and play it backwards the Second time.bi start on the E with E micyfian scale. Then the D lydian scale where i tried to play 16 note triplets at the end smile.gif

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Jul 23 2021, 07:45 PM

Cool! Yes, it's a very nice solo, with very enjoyable phrases. I like your tone, motivic development. I only feel that some parts could be played with better timing, but other than that it's a great take.

I can hear some Andy Timmons influences, are you familiar with his playing?

Posted by: tflava Jul 23 2021, 11:08 PM

Hey mate.
Thanks yes some parts are not whole precise. U wanted to shift with the timing for some effect but it was not as it was supposed to be 😂

Yes i know him. Very good guitarist is he smile.gif

Hello gab.

How are you?
Im working on my diminshed scale and know how to use and apply it and get the sound in my head. Im also working on some own licks i made from the scale.
I was wondering if we can do a new sort of working together where i focuss more on writing some arrangement or get some target from you where to focuss on.

So maybe make a funk and focus on syncopated rhythm and leadsl as an example.
I really liked the creativity workout and i think that kind of workouts have a HUGE impact on my playing and thinking as a musician smile.gif
I want to Explore different styles like latin, funk, fusion, rock, blues, a little country, surf etc...
Im also still working on my hybrid picking, alternate picking, legato and other techniques.

Let me know what you think smile.gif

Thanks mate. Nice that your willing to do this for me smile.gif
I prefer if you dictate the style and concept for me.

I Saw the new picture and came up with an idea immeditiately. An agressieve sound. What do you think?

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Aug 5 2021, 03:13 PM

Hi Tim! I love it. I can hear some Stoner and Metal vibes here. It's aggressive and dark as the picture.

For any reason, this song by legendary Argentinian guitarist Pappo came to my mind:

I think that this idea could be your first assignment. Recording drums, bass, adding vocals if possible, and giving a song structure to a triplet feel stoner rock/metal tune.

So it would be:

FIRST ASSIGNMENT:

Style: Stoner Rock
Concept: Triplet/Shuffle Feel

What do you think?

Posted by: tflava Aug 5 2021, 04:46 PM

Hello mate.

Very nice. I will go for it. I will try to make lyrics for the chorus then.
I will make a bass part and also come up with some lead stuff.
I have some real cool things in kind smile.gif
This style is less familiair for me but i listened to your song and some other and think i can replicate the style a little smile.gif
Ill keep you updated man smile.gif

That sounds great! I usually have to compose music that is out of my comfort zone and one good trick that works for me is to use Spotify playlists and listen to them while I'm doing other things.

I would search for "stoner rock" on Spotify, and listen to it while going for a walk.

Looked at your band the vids but what an amszing band. You played in front of thousands of People. Its my big dream smile.gif

I have 2 vids Here i wanted to show you with my reggae band. 1 vid of playing in my garden. We drinkend some beer before so it isnt Our best performance but it was lot of fun. And antoger vid of is practicing in the practice room. More of a carribean salsa rhythm

I also recorded another jam today. I the first part till 1.16 i tried to pay full attention to follow the chords. After that i let loose and just played with my ears. In my opinion from there it sounded a bit better what do you think?

The second chord is a G#diminshed chord so i tried to play the G# dim whole half scale sometimes but its quite challenging.
Thanks a lot again and have a nice day mate .

Thanks mate!! Yeah, we lived lots of beautiful moments with Cirse. It surpassed all the dreams I had as a teenager so I'm extremely grateful with life. smile.gif

The band broke up 2 years ago, but I formed a new one called Ramen with the same musicians but a new singer.

We couldn't play live yet because of the pandemic but hopefully we'll do a first show soon.

Yes! We always play better when we stop thinking and start feeling. However, both moments are important parts of a guitar session. The more you practice, the more you'll internalize the concepts and they will become a second nature.

I like how you become more bluesy in the second part. The only thing that I missed there is the use of silences in between phrases, and finding more defined phrases.

Very nice man it must be incredibble too play like that. I think its real good that you live your derams and worked hard for it cool.gif
The band RAMEN sounds also awesome man. Both with a different vibe are the songs you send me. Very nice!!

With the reggae band we play mostly covers. We play also 3 songs that i have written and one the key player have written. We just want to have fun and gig a few times a year. With my other band we are more motivated to play a lot but i likeboth because i play real diiferent genres with both.

About the jam, i will focus on my phrasing and silence more. next time i shoot another vid and focuss on that concept smile.gif
But i have to study this way i understand. To focuss and sometimes let go smile.gif

Today i reached the mighty 200 bpm in sixteenth notes for the first time with a speed burst practice ! What do you think smile.gif

Nice! There are things related to music and guitar that you only learn when you play in a band. There is no book, clinic, or lesson that can replace or explain the real band situation... playing with real people.

Good job man! Your picking technique is also improving a lot. You start to lose sync between hands at 170/180. That's the tempo you need to focus. Don't practice too much at higher tempos until you can put both hand on sync.

If you need more Speed exercises, check out this thread: https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=44163#

Posted by: tflava Aug 11 2021, 04:38 PM

Yeah its right. I have to say that i like playing with others the most. There is less time to practice other things because you have to be "gig" ready but i get a lot out of it.

Thanks i also notice it myself that around 180 the trouble comes in. But ill keep continuing with the excersises.
I also practice hybrid picking a lot and i notice that i use it a lot in my playing at the moment. Unconcious also. Maybe a little too much but i think if i focuss on it that i van make my advantage of it.

Thanks for your help and all your feedback. This saturday en monday i have to play a gig so focuss on the songs. After that i will go on with the stoner rock and other excersises.

Thanks mate i will.

Here i revorded the jam again. At the beginning i was focussin on breathing more.
Later on, on about the half of the track.
Im more noodling around and try to play some fast and try some things. So maybe its good to focus on the beginning:)

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Aug 13 2021, 03:10 PM

Hi Tim!! How are you?

Thanks for sharing!!

Cool! I notice that breathing makes a big difference. There are nice phrases in this jam, and I think that combining melodic stuff with some shreddy passages gives your playing a good balance.

Regarding your sound... I think that your tone doesn't fit with the style. It's too dirty and has too much delay, don't you think so? I would prefer a cleaner tone. biggrin.gif

Posted by: tflava Aug 13 2021, 04:51 PM

Hi Gab.

Thanks i will try to incorporate the breathing more into my playing.

Yes, i don't like the tone either. I was a bit lazy because my amp was't connected so i used bias fx again but went for the first preset i found rolleyes.gif

Next time i will choose a cleaner tone. Your ears are definitely great because every time when im lazy and try to go the easy way you notice it laugh.gif

Hi Tim!

The Creativity workout track is great! It sounds like a Netflix soundtrack. I like the riff, the overall groove, the guitar arrangements and the vocals. The only thing that I didn't enjoy is the coda. I don't think that the harmonized guitars sound cool, or at least the part doesn't sound good to me. If you work a bit more on the mix, and re-think that final section, this will be a killer track. biggrin.gif

Thanks for sharing the funky jam! I think that your phrasing is getting better. I like the articulation of your playing here, the use of different note durations and rhythms is very enjoyable. Just be sure to avoid using the concepts too much. (like for example the staccato notes, and how you end all phrases with a short note and silence during the verses). On a side note, your tone sounds great in this one.

Posted by: tflava Aug 20 2021, 09:02 PM

Thanks mate smile.gif i think i will scipp the coda and repeat the main riff but add some little solo in it smile.gif
I also need to work on some drum fills and have to mix the overall smile.gif i hope i get time this week. If not then next week. Glad you like it.

Thanks a lot man this tone is better yeah.
I will try to mix some things up and not step in one concept for yoo Long.
Maybe a good excersise for a next solo for an arrangement. To use different time feels and time patterns:)

Let's talk a bit about music first. What music are you listening nowadays?

Posted by: tflava Aug 30 2021, 05:01 PM

Thats a good question smile.gif

I listen a lot to the songs i need to play for my bands.
That are a lot of styles.
Funk, reggae, latin, ska, calypso, salsa for my reggae band.
Rock, blues, pop, soul for my other band.

I also listen a lot to fusion solos. The thing is that i like all different styles and want to be able to play them all.

Artists i love to listen to are:
Tom quayle, santana, stevie ray vaughan, Sublime, guthrie govan, Martin miller, jos Smith, Acdc, the scorpions, stephen marley.
And a lot more smile.gif
And i listen to radio. Then i like to listen to not the most commob hits but to a program that send out: country, blues and blues rock.

But as i say i love music and especially to make.
If i go to a concert it would be reggae, ska or carribean vibe bands. Maybe a good classic rock band also

And i love the rhythm of funk and also weird solos over it

Posted by: tflava Sep 2 2021, 10:43 AM

Hey mate,

I recorded a lot of stuff smile.gif

I recored 2 licks i made up my own. One diminshed lick and one chromatic blues style lick smile.gif
Maybe i can use it one day for my improvs smile.gif

I also recored a fusion style backing track where i gave myself the targent notes in front. At the beginning i followed the target notes i notated. Later on i improvised more freely.

The notes i had to target were:
1) F-D-A-G
2) C-B-F-C
3) E- Ab- D- F
4) A-F-G-D
I played each circle of targent notes for 2 or 3 rounds. i think its good to practice to find my notes more easily on the fretboard and practice some stuff with a goal. What do you think?

Hi mate! How are you?

Regarding the assignment, it's cool to see that you are a music lover and that you enjoy many different styles of music.

It would be interesting and handy for us to have all your (finished) songs in a playlist. You could use Soundcloud or a similar service. I think that it can be cool to check your music and see how you progress as a composer/mixer/producer. What do you think?

I would like to assign you the next style and concept:

Music Style: Funk Rock, inspired by RHCP, Vulfpeck, Cory Wong.
Concept: Groove. Making a catchy modern funk rock tune.

What do you think?

I love these licks, specially the second one.

Nice! I like this backing track. I think that there are many cool licks in this jam. I would like to see you playing exactly the same thing but trying to make it sound groovier and with more dynamics. Once again, the tone is not my favorite, but it's ok.

By the way, I think that your fusion phrasing is getting more consistent. You are on the right track!

Hey mate,

ok i will make a list. is it also ok to make a playlist in youtube? Or do you prefer soundcloud because then i will make an own account for compositions?

It will be really cool to make a funk rock backing track. I have allready an idea in my mind where i play a catchy intro with some horn sections. ( trombones, trumperts , sax etc.)
Then i maybe think of a catchy rhythm based on one chord but witsh some fragments of the chords on different plaxces of the neck. And then get over it with a groovy distorted funk rock riff or something. maybe use a wah wah. I'll keep you updated smile.gif I listened a lot to both artistt today and think (and hope) i can create a mix of them.

Thanks a lot with the advice on the fusion track. I will use another tone next time. Do you mean that i play exactly the same or use the same context and target notes?
Because there were no standard licks and all was improvised so then i need to listen well and find out what i played laugh.gif
I will focus onmore dynamics and groovier then. Maybe mix up more subdivisions.

Thans a lot.

greetz Tim

I don't mean exactly the same but something similar focusing on dynamics and groove.

Not everything is in it yet but i will do it this week.

I made a new improvisation where i focused on the groove. i forgot to look at the target notes. I also tried to play with more dynamics.
What do you think?

Ps i have to say my tone is'nt that good. Next recording i will spend some more time searching for the right tone.

Cool! Your playing is definitely groovier here! I enjoyed the first half a lot because it has a good balance of rhythm variation, phrasing and use of silence. This is the way to go! I think that it's important to have a better tone if you also want to work on dynamics. I feel that this tone doesn't provide a good range of them.

That's nice! This could be the intro and also the chorus. I think that you need to record / program bass now. This will let you start to experiment with parts that have only bass or just a bit of guitar. You'll have more variations and you'll be able to give this a song structure.

Listen to the song "Follow the light" by Dirty Loops, and notice how each part has different texture/dynamics/elements.

Hey mate ive edited my text but deleted it so ill typ again:(

Nice to see a list so i can see progress clear.

About the funk. i tried to play the bass but its difficult for me. I dont know really if this bass is good i played. What do you think? I need to learn to slapp i think
I also came up with a bubble part in Bm7/9 and play a dorian bubble part.
I was thinking to play an E7#9 part after it and make a cool solo woith some new scales and outside playing im working on. So i can practice in real using it.
I also came up with some lyrics oi think are cool. i will work on it an other day smile.gif

I listened to the cory wong song and it sounds killer smile.gif i try to make different sections. The bubble part i played is inspired by a lesson of Diego budicin i learned and play a while ago smile.gif
In the post above there you can download the arrangement till how far im now
I also need to do the horn sections again at the end of the intro. There it isnt in tune but i can SIMPLY fix it with the piano roll i think smile.gif thanks again.

Hi Tim!

I'm really enjoying your funky assignment. The new version is very promising! These are some early comments and suggestions:

- Use the piano roll to fix the brasses. Besides the scale issues that you noticed, it has some timing problems as well.
- You don't need to play slap bass, but you' re right, it would sound great. What about inviting a bass player once you have the final version?
- Now that you have different parts, I would work on the full structure. Copy parts, and try muting and unmuting elements.
- I think that the lead guitar that appears as soon as the verse starts shouldn't be there. I would let 4 measures of funky rhythm and bass.

Hey gab,

Thanks. I will also focuss the timing part smile.gif my keyboard playing isnt also very good but its getting better by making these kind of stuff wink.gif
Maybe i will also try to come up with some groovier bass part and see if i get the feeling right. but maybe i will also invite my friend to ask him to play some slapping bass wink.gif
About the structure: i was thinking of keeping the first part. Then immediately after that i try to sing the chorus. Maybe then go to the bubble part and after it let the chorus come back but with that lead fills. There was also a bit played with wah wah but ill remove it bacause its too long, it was an experiment. And then maybe i come up with a different part and rhythm pattern to groove a nice solo over it:)

I dont know if i got time this week because i have to prepare for a gig next sunday. but if ill find time i will move on smile.gif

Here is a short recording of the gig i had 2 weeks ago or something smile.gif

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Sep 12 2021, 04:37 PM

Wou! Congrats on the gig mate!! I can see the audience and also the band enjoying the experience a lot! smile.gif

Also, your band sound really good man! Very good singer!

Tell me more about the show! What songs did you play? Did you experience any technical issue? How was the preparation?

And thanks for the update on the funky tune. The structure plan sounds promising. Looking forward to hear it.
