I've been playing guitar for 16 years

Favorite musicians/bands: I like almost any genre if its good I like it but at heart am really a rock guy, 80's rock, but like a lot of bands/artists on this site from Jason becker, slash, Angus Young, Alice in Chains, Deftones, 311, Tool, Tran Siberian Orchestra, Breaking Benjamin, Dokken, it could go on and on haha. But I'll also listen to classical at times, country in the right mood, pop sometimes, rap. Love playing vocal lines and sometimes piano stuff on guitar.

Guitar Goals: Great question! Did the band thing several years ago, went well. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gmq8dD8MhYs wrote this song and did vocals, was really popular playing out with people always singing it back to us. We eventually ran out of steam. I'm a guitar player at heart and always sang and played bass as needed and usually because I could do it better than anyone else we had. I've read a lot of books and been a part of several websites but I really want to keep getting better and be able to freely create on the guitar when in the mood to write a song or solo or melody but I also really want to be able to play the songs of the giants before me and the music that has inspired me. I feel like with a lot of my improvements I still can't play a lot of the difficult stuff from the bands/players I love and want to be able to do that wether its the bark at the moon solo, playing altitudes or whatever. Hopefully this is achievable as I plan on playing my whole life so I have time to work on it!

5 years from now music and guitar: To be closer to the paragraph above.

I usually make time to play guitar everyday even if I only have a small amount of time. Some days I am able to dig in more than others. I find a lot of times though if I'm excited and inspired about what I'm doing I find ways to make time to play more and when I'm not I just do a quick lesson and quit for the day.

I have played live for 3-4 years probably 10-15 gigs a year, not a ton but a handful. Mix of doing just vocals, guitar, bass. Not much lead work as I had to do all vocals.

Strong and Weak points: Weak points is learning by ear but has gotten a lot better lately. I struggle with speed, being able to play things exactly as I hear them. Strong since I've been playing a while I can do quite a few things and keep rhthyms pretty well. I listen very intently and can usually tell if something is off and needs corrected. Sometimes I'm too impatient though and try to play difficult things too fast or move on from a song before really mastering it.

Music theory I know a decent amount. I'm familiar with the basics I would say. Being able to apply all the theory is probably the bigger challenge.

I can record videos on my phone and will upload if the files aren't too big!

Hi Jared! Thanks for the information.

From what I can see in your video, your playing is consistent. You can keep the rhythm, and everything sound in pitch and with the right feeling.

I think that it could be a good idea to start with these two lessons that I've suggested:

https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Hand-Synch-II/
https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Stoner...at-rhythm-solo/

The first one is more technique related. The second one is more related to groove, tone, dynamics and feeling. This could be a good starting point for us.

What do you say?

I've been getting crushed by these lessons, kind of embarrasing since I've been playing so long! I've got them both where I can play through them but the Hand Synch lesson falls apart with the backing track and the Stoner for Strat song is close but still needs work. Should I keep pushing through to try to learn them better or post a video of my struggles?

A rough take of Hand Synch II

I really seem to struggle when changing finger positions and when everything speeds up at the end, is it going from 8th to 16 notes that I'm missing?

Thanks!

Hi mate,

That's going well. It obviously needs more time of practice. At this point, I would focus a bit more on economizing movements than speed. Here are some tips:

- Try to keep your left hand fingers closer to the fretboard when they are not pressing. Make the movements the smaller possible.

- Don't press the fretboard too much. Experiment trying the softer pressure that a fret needs to start sounding.

- From what I can see, there is some fingers (thumb and numer 1) movement from your right hand. The movement should start from your wrist to have an effective alternate picking technique.

A good way to apply these ideas is to divide the lesson in smaller blocks and play them as a loop. This will let you adjust details.

A few rough spots but I spent a lot of time on this lesson! I really enjoyed it! Got me into a nice Plexi amp setting and away from full blast gain and let me work dynamics a bit and led me to some cool tones I used playing after working on the lesson. This is different than stuff I normally play too which I think helped me learn alot! Let me know what you think!

Hi Jared, great to find this video!

I also agree that it's been a good move to work on this lesson. I notice how you are not very comfortable with the phrasing but at the same time I feel that this can become natural and add a lot of fresh air into your playing after some weeks of practice.

Besides the obvious details to fix regarding cleanness and precision indifferent parts, I would like to mark that you need to put some attention into your vibrato and bending techniques. Remember that the movement should be focused on your wrist and it's explaned on this videos by Vai. You seem to be more comfortable with your first finger, but the problem becomes more important when doing vibrato and bending with your third finger.

Thanks Gab! I like the Vai videos. I'm feelnig kind of overwhelmed by the feedback in the grading section and feel like I may not be able to play the piece up to standard. Should I keep trying anyway on the same piece or do I need something easier?

Hi mate,

I don't think that you need to go for other lesson. The main thing to fix on your next video is the quality of audio. Are you using the camera's mic?

The lesson has two parts, rhythm and soloing. I recommend you to work on each one isolated. Darius has given good tips regarding technique, and expression. Write them down, and identify which are the most relevant at this moment, and focus on them. The lesson will become better and better with the pass of days.

Don't worry about the low grade that you've got, the REC section is specially to know the opinion and suggestion by different instructors. I think that a new take in 10 days could be a good idea.

What do you think?

Yes I was using the Mic on my Iphone. I can set it up differently as he suggested and maybe eventually work towards a better recording set up altogther on my Macbook Air. I can work on and repost. Been browsing the site and there are so many great lessons I've bookmarked I don't know if I'll ever get to them all! I've bookmarked several of your lessons, love all the grunge stuff and atreyu type metal stuff!

Gab,

I've been tirelessly working on getting this together. Before perfecting I wanted to send you a version I put together using Garageband, my webcam, and IMovie. During this process it took a while figuring out the programs, then my IMovie had an issue and was on the phone on and off with apple for 8 hours. Then I figured its easiest to get the file converted to MP4 to upload to youtube without it taking 4 hours. That being said I know there are some bad mistakes, however I wanted to check with you more how I have the audio and video now. If the quality is good enough I'll go back to work on getting the piece just right. Even though this has taken a lot of time to figure out, when I watch it compared to the camera video on my phone I think this sounds so much better so its been a good learning process on how to make quality sounding videos. Anyway I hope this audio/video is better and any other tips or advice on the recording process let me know!

Hi Jared, great job!!

You won't regret the time that you've dedicated to adjust this technical issues. The new video sound good now. This is the type of sound that allows us hear your playing clearly. This is enough for REC and sharing videos here.
