Hi ElHombre! I am glad you decided to join! Very happy to see you!
I can't wait to start mentoring you and help you to discover new ways to approach your playing!!!
Before we will start I have a few questions!
-What are your goals?
-What is your weakness?
-What is your strongest point?
-Your favorite guitar players?
I am looking forward to work with you!
Hey, my goal is to be a complete guitarist as possible. I play from classical to metal but there is a lot of styles i need to get more knowledge about, thinking of jazz, fusion etc which you have very much knowledge about and can help me with
My weakness is not getting things done and sometimes be too less disciplined.
My strenght, at some times I can be very innovative and create things in no time
Eric clapton, Hendrix and Santana made me start of with electrical guitar.
Then I disocvered more modern players like John Petrucci, and finally my great idol marco sfogli, I have been transcribing a lot of his songs.
I also like to listen to blues even though I dont play it much, I saw Joe bonamassa recently
cheers
Perfect! I really like Clapton myself!
He is an amazing musician and composer!
I think we can start with a blues in E it is very important to learn how to play blues!
It is the hardest and simpliest style at the same time!
You really have to tell the story when you are playing blues and if you can play blues you can play guitar!
Everything started with blues and every great player knows how to play it!
I prepared a few licks for you in style of Eric Clapton!

You had some blues menotring ready awesome
I will start working with this, shall first deal with some theory and my new song
cheers
Sounds great! Let me know if you need help with the theory!!!
I am right know re-learning scales and harmonisation, but one thing I didnt do much on classical was chord progressions, I should start learning the most basic progressions I think, along with that get some more knowledge of unusal chords and make some backing tracks when practicing scales.
Also here is a song I learned recently: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mMjrQVx8Cl8&feature=related
I know they key is in D major.
But there are some intresting things about the song, like 0:59 and several other places, It sounds like the song changes key, or is it just out notes?
For example it goes :
-----------------------------------
-----------7----8-----10-----11-
--9------------------------------
----------------------------------
-----------------------------------
-----------------------------------
So its half step, wholestep and halfstep no scale has that formula?
That A# isnt in the D major scale, out note or key change?
Yes its very nice, one of the most touching melodies I have heard reminds me of something, just had to learn it and luckily they had published the backing track!
Anyway have you also checked the files I sent you?
Sure do you mean soundcloud?
Wow alex! this was some really cool playing. I really like your playing style, you really got your own sound I think.
Okey, I would also like to learn this part, I will slow it down but can you also explain a little bit about it?
cheers
Well, I am amazed by your playing! I till try to listen to it slowly and catch some of the licks you are using, it got such flow to it and excellent note choice.
Cant thank you enough man, this is really cool
I have come up with some ideas myself but my problem i the sound I dont get a very suitable sound to this song. I liked your sound very much.
And also, your solo ends in the middle, which actually became quite cool, then I can come in there in the middle and try to play in the style of alex feather
The first part of the song is maybe more structured and returnes to the original melody with variations, and the middle/last part before ending is a bit more free without the basic melody, and the ending will have variation of the melody that feels kind of "ending" I think it became good, I will use a fade away effect on this one.
But yes, the only problem right know would be my sound not happy with it :/
First of all I am really glad you liked the solo!
Thank you for having me!
I like you idea about the form I guess I just didn't understand correctly where to start and where to finish!
So here is what we are gonna do:
-We will focus on your sound
-I will guide you through the song and will help you create a very cool solo in your own style! You need to sound like yourself and I will help you!
Let's start with your sound!
In order to help you out I will need to know what gear you are using and what recording software
After I will do my research and will find the best answer for you!
Than we will start working on your licks that will fit this song well!
Looking forward to start! It will be exciting!
Hi alex
I use POD X3 for recording. But I was thinking of upgrading to Pod HD pro, as you reccomended. Where did you find it for 500$? I only find it for around 700 dollars.
But anyway I am using pod x3, yes.
Ive been trying custom tone and dialing in my own tone. Well it shouldnt be too much drive in the tone and I guess not to much distortion either. Some delay
I tried different amps, didnt get a very good tone.
But to be honest I dont really know how to get that sound you were using.
I have my fender strat and my Ibanez, I guess the Fender would be more suitable for this song. Well, when playing in this still it feels like much more comfortable to play with the fender, feels like I have more bite in the strings with this higher action.
Alex did you only use A mixolydian mode?
The start of the solo is just genius, that bend then the two following licks.
Well Im doing some progress with my ideas, just cant get that sound I want!
Want it to really have flow to it and be kind of groovy.
I found this awesome video for you!
I love the tone this guys came up with!
Here it is!!!
I played mixolydian and some pentatonics mixed together
Mostly A mixo
Yes its very good, I have seen it and used it But Im not going for a high gain tone on this one!
What settings did you have on your recording hardware/software ?
http://soundcloud.com/erik93/newsound
I did a recording this morning with my sound, I think it fits good, gets a little trebly at times when hitting double strings.
Got the middle part a little wrong, and then its just improvisation.
This is approximatley how the song is going to be.
Also, there are a few out notes in it, A# instead of A.
Sounds nice to me but maybe I have to strike and A#7 chord over that A# note what do you say?
So Alex, we have this chord progression: Bm7 Em7 | A7 Dmaj7|Bm7 Em7|A7
Well Im thinking I can put in a key change here to make the song more exciting, sometime in the middle, and play F# Mixolydian instead.
So we get to Bm7, then we go directly to A#dim then to G#m7 C#m7|F#7 Bmaj7 ..... in B major/ F# mixolydian then
Hmm why cant I edit my mentor threads?
Have to post again:
http://soundcloud.com/erik93/newsound2
Here is another sound I got, which got more flow to it
Okey I added and EQ and dropped the distortion level of the sound, well can record that aswell.
As you can here it need more drive! But not in a distoirtion kind if way, I mean I need to get more flow to the track.
I will change the guitarbacking and at some rythm palm muting between the chords.
I also have to get my tone louder and more flow.
But I was thinking of using A#dim over the out note (A#) when going over to the key of Bmajor.
How shall I make the change to make it sound as good as possible?
It goes like this I play over Bmi7, Emi7, then I hit the A# on the solo, what chord should I play over this A#? I was thinking of A#dim or something but can I go directly to G#m7 over this A#? How will that change be?
Emi7 > G#m7 ?
I am glad you liked the track alex.
My Ibanez is going to be sent to the Ibanez distrubitor in my country and it will be checked and then it will have a setup so my guitar will be in perfect condition I think. So hopefully the whole song is completed in a few weeks.
Now I just got to connect all Ideas and make structure them.
here is an idea I have had a long time
http://soundcloud.com/erik93/newprojectsong
Should I make a song out of it?
hehe, my Ibanez didnt sound very good when the distortion kicked in but it still shows my idea!
D major all the way. Im thinking of doing some change, not like the one in my previous song but more like a pause and then a key change.
Thinking of open chords fingerpicked in the beginning then change to something heavier.
Hey alex, also your solo for my song, I would like to learn it, do you maybe remember the fast parts?
Since I got the guitar file without backing it will be easier to learn it and slow it down.
Yeah also that halfstep is in a song Im learning: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YIPtOdElSNY&feature=context&context=G2d836edRCGXQYbcTJ33Z_-m1jK9YKXn4jLwTICpT7MYl6fdaxFqY
Hey Alex.
I am supposed to do a ZZ top arrangement on my graduation with a friend who is a blues/rock player.
But unfortuneatley I have not studied this style so much and while imporvising it doesnt sound really rock or blues when I play
Could you help me out?
We will do an arrangement on "tush" dressed in beards lol. There will be no vocals only a looped backing track where we will switch between soloing and playing rythm guitar.
I can take some insipration from the original solo but I need to expand my vocabulary a bit in the genre. Do you know some licks? both easy and advanced.
Im graduating from pre engineer school but I will probably go to a music production school afterwards instead of becoming and engineer.
Okey thanks alex
So here is a few licks I came up with!

Okey thanks alex!
Well I got very inspired by your playing in your songs id like to learn more about that
Found this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EMeeFqonva0&feature=related
Maybe I could practice doing some changes and learn to understand whats behind it.
Can we work on that or some more ZZ top first? I will perform in june so its a long time til then!
You sent me some ZZ top licks I will look at and if I have any questions we can deal with them later.
So I think we can start with some fusion playing now.
Will look if there is any GMC lesson for the basics maybe or you could maybe tell me.
Cheers
Cool! I am glad you have decided to start learning new styles!
You will have a lot of fun!
So let's start!
I have this chord progression for you!
http://soundcloud.com/alex-feather-akimov/ii-v-i-jam
The chords are:
Emi7 - A7 - Dmaj7
It's a basic II-V-I progression, the trick is, to learn how to play over it! As soon as you will learn that you will be able to play fusion and jazz easily!
We will start with chord tones! So chord tones are notes that chords made of! When you are playing chord tones you are playing over the changes!
For example:
Emi7
E-G-B-D
3rd and 7th are the most important chord tones to play, because that's how you can tell the difference between major and minor!
I came up with a cool exercise that will help you figure out chord tones!
Here it is:
Chord tones exercise

Hey alex. Great exceris I think have a few questions.
I should of course only play the E minor changes when going over to the A7, I mean playing them over the Emi7 chord, I think its a bit hard to time them excactly with the chord being played.
Also this requires you to now the names of the notes, I am only comfortable from the open strings to the 5th fret, that mostly where I played when I played classical music and learned notes, so I will also have to work on learning all the names of the notes.
So in the E minor scale I will use the third and seventh which is G and D but also E and D.
Well a bit confused, my questions maybe wasnt so clear hope you can help
Yes I was not sure either what I was asking just trying too see the whole picture
So the I chord is Dmaj7 then the key is d major right.
But we are playing these changes over the Emi7 chord?
I dont know how to say the intervals correctly in english but we have first E, then third G, 5th B and 7th D.
So you are supposed to use these intervals, but how excatly does this become changes? All these notes are in the D major scale.
If we would use D major we would have D, F#, A, C#. Why do we use only E minor then ?
Well I know these are not good questions but maybe you can understand some of what I am asking and try to explain
cheers
Hi alex!
I have been in Germany this week at the hannover industrial exibithion.
Before that I did some recording.
I also made improvisation over a Greg Howe track before i left: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rVIpTIC-iV0&feature=plcp&context=C447ec52VDvjVQa1PpcFMtGD7dl-aq3u0wnZkb3mBulS2IPVpPKJ0%3D
tell me what you think. We were talking about playing over changes, I want to learn it, I only use one scale here.
Also I am going to learn this song I think: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q8AId2ltAfY&feature=related
So you are not supposed to play E-G-D-B all over the track?
For example over the A7 chord you wrote a C# (14 fret B string) cause the C# belongs to the A7 chord.
Thats what I dont really get.
I though you were supposed to play these notes over the A7. But to start of with, I will only use E-G-D-B since these notes belongs to every chord in this progression?
These are the chord:
A-7, G-7/C7, Fmaj7, B-7/E7 (repeat this part one time)
A-7, G-7/C7, Fmaj7, Bb7
B-7b5, E7#9, A-7, E7#9
I only used A minor scale. That why I want to learn how to play in changes, and maybe learn more fusion licks
I dont know alex, I didnt write out the chords, I will listen to the track and see
So I think A-7 means minor in this case
Let's look at the chords:
Ami7, Gmi7/C7, Fmaj7, Bm7/E7 (repeat this part one time)
Am7, Gm7/C7, Fmaj7, Bb7
B-7b5, E7#9, Am7, E7#9
Let's look at the first part and analyze it!
Ami7, Gmi7/C7, Fmaj7, Bm7/E7
The first four chords in the key of F
But when you are getting Bmi7 and E7 you are getting into A
I would like you to write out all possible options that you think might work over the first part!
I will Alex as soon as I can, im praticing for some tests right now.
Anyway, do you think I should buy this?: http://www.greghowe.com/tablature.html
Seems like a great way to learn fusion, learning these songs and get them explained, some great songs.
That and learning to play in changes will surely be good learning material
Okey so the inte the first part it is F.
Then if playing in changes wouldnt we play F,A,C,E 1th,3th,5th,7th ??
Okey, over Ami7 we play A,C,E,G
Gmi7, G,D,A,F
C7, C,E,G,B.
But I dont really know.
Are you supposed to play the chord tones for Ami7, only over that track? you can play all the chord tones of all chord over the track or what? I still dont understand this
Let's start with simple pentatonics!
Ami7, Gmi7/C7, Fmaj7, Bm7/E7
Over Ami7 - Gmi7 - C7 - Fmaj7
I want you to play G minor pentatonic
Over Bm7 - E7
F# minor or A major
Let's start with that! Try to jam over this progression and let me know if you have any questions!
Aha you meant scales okey. Pentatonics, I will try it
Well I havent played much pentatonics (suprising maybe) I usually go with the major/minor scales and also mixolydian and some other modes.
But you remove the 3th and the 6th and you got the pentatonic. But when improvising, over the 5th fret I dont got that good knowledge of the location of all the notes but I will give it a try
No im good
I can figure them out I know the most major/minor scales and I know what notes to remove so I get 5 in the scale.
Its just that I dont know the names of the notes over the 5 th fret that I can say which note it is within a milisecond!
After my test on tuesday I got nothing music related to worry about and I can start pratice 3 hours a day I will have a look at the pentatonics!
cheers
So Alex I am free of all non guitar related troubles, its time to start practice more serioustly now, 3 hours h day.
And you idea was to first learn me to play different pentatonics over progressions before learning changes?
So maybe we can begin with, how do I know which pentatonics are playable and when, looking at the progression?
G major scale, E Ionian, and A dorian, B phrygian all have one # (F#). So these scales got common notes.
So you find the minor modes common with the key and turn them into pentatonics?
So I have a Sunny Backing track for you in style of Greg Howe!
Here it is
http://soundcloud.com/alex-feather-akimov/sunnybackingtrack
I would like you to jam over it for a bit so you can get the feel!
We will start a new mentoring approach with you! It will be like a collab but only you and me! I will start recording tomorrow and will post my take here and than it will be your turn!
Cool new menotring Yes I will make a recording as soon as I can
Hi I just wanted to follow up and see how are you doing? Do you need any help with the assignment I gave you?
I cant focus on praticing alex
I got your tasks, cosmins tasks, my new song.
And loads of stuff, very difficult stuff I am trying to learn, I cant focus directly on learning one thing, I jump between them, and I always end up improvising over a cool backing track, which is fun but doenst really give much.
Think I need some help structuring my practicing.
Cheers

Here is my proceeding on our sunny jam. But first we can deal with the practice routine
okey, check my previous post. What can we say about my proceeding of our jam?
Well the sound wasnt so fusion and not so close to yours, i didnt really capture your style either.
I used A minor scale and a minor pentatonic at some part. what can we say about my solo?
Hi alex, im praticing quite many things now
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/solo-guitar/rock-ballad-solo/
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Iced-Earth-Style/
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cYM864IOTs8&feature=g-all-c
Maybe I could use some assitance Im also doing excercises in a book i got from my teatcher.
I want to learn fusion to one of my favorite styles even though Im a beginner.
Im practicing some quite hard lessons, but I like challenges and it helps me evolve.
Its just a few licks in them that gets me stuck
Lesson part 8 of the Rock ballad! that is a diffcult lick. Its hard to play on my fender or esp, but on the ibanez it work thanks to the jumbo frets.
And im trying to get my right hand to understand the gallop rythm of the Iced earth style. Its a good technique to know. D,D,U,D
Also I meant im a beginner in fusion/jazz not in guitar overall I have played for 10 years
i will do a new take on sunny soon Tonight is too hot for playing! cant even be inside
http://soundcloud.com/erik93/sunny-take-2
Here I chose a more softer approach, working on some things u mentioned.
I have always had timing issues with this song. I dont know really how to tackle it
When I improvise I just feel the beat and play and dont think too much.
Done!
Okey alex Why did you choose those notes? the song is in key Am, so its 1st, 2nd, and 7th note..
Cause I was supposed to do this over sunny right?
And hope will it help improve my timing
okey sounds good alex I have refreshend my mind a bit regarding the notes position. I used to play classical guitar, and knew the notes names and position instantly. But in classical guitar u usually play in position 1, only up to the first fret! which means i had bad knowledge about notes above it. But I have now worked on that and I know the fretboard instantly (almost
Also a question, Am I Suppost to continue our sunny jam using this, or am I going to play a few bars of my own, standalone.
Cause I think maybe I could continue the jam with some more complex playing later
I will do it on wednesday! been a bit busy lately, all the time I have had has been spent on theory, excersises and transcribing a song im learning
Hi alex!
here are two files for you, one I recorded using only the notes G-A-B.
Also I made a little improvisation over sunny, using only a minor scale and some pentatonic but no chord tones, just to show some cool ideas I got over improvising on this track lately, mostly tapping
cheers
Thanks Alex
You are right, I need more discipline in my playing I also want to learn how to play in changes.
So whats the next step? some more timing excersies?
Also, I have good knowledge och the major, minor scales and the major modes, but I should learn some more pentatonics maybe before learning to play in changes, cause pentatonics are almost chords.
Well I mostly think of them as chords so I move them around starting from the root
Ah, I see now that you used only these notes in your inspiration track, that was really good to solo like that using 3 notes.
I will listen to it and have another go at it
Alex, tell more about you music studies in USA
Sure, Do that
Also i have recorded some playing of the assignment i will send it today
Here are two takes i din in the week:

Cool Alex I will check them out and try to use them in sunny and other cool tracks..
after that maybe we could check out the changes in sunny and I could learnt to play it.
We talked about it previous assignments but I didnt get it fully, but we were supposed to start with pentatonics over certain chords right?
Yes of course alex, sounds good, but that next assignment, does it involve something that has to do with changes as I proposed
Alex, a quick question, how do you apporach pentatonics?
I think of them more as chords, bar chords, moveable more than scales..
like this
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/scalegenerator
Start from root on 6th string
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/scalegenerator
start from one note above root (7th note, A, root B )
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/scalegenerator
start from root on 5th string..
and so on
Okay, you are looking at the positions, can you explain a bit more? Also how do u usually combine pentatonics?
Okay, was it possible to get Recording mentoring? like you mentioned in the video chat?
Well to be able to be better recordings would be good, and discuss som composion
cheers
I Use Axe FX ultra, reaper (but I would like to get pro tools but u needed a usb key so couldnt DL it)
EZ drummer.
I would like to keep working with the fusion stuff we have been working on.
But I could use some recording assistance in a few song ideas, but I will probably only do a post or week a so.
Yes sounds good alex, check my above post, I use ez drummer and reaper.
I recently get an axe fx cheap from USA too that im very happy with
Here is a basic rythmic idea for a song of mine.
The idea is to have this kind of catchy start rythm ,then the song will evolve into slower parts with some cool chords you can play arpeggios and som changes over:
Check it out, played 5 times, 1 time slowly
Wonder if that rythm will be suitable to play over, or I am going to have that as intro and change the riff a bit for the lead playing?
I have ideas for bassline I will experiment some and come back
So now I will display my idea no bass yet tough
Well the song starts without drums, displaying the riff, then drums come in.
Riff is played twice and then we have a variation.
Then a classical rythm stop and a bend of course just displaying what I have in mind.
Well the record is off timing and stuff, and sound is very bad, dont get a good crunch tone, but its just to dispaly the idea check it out
What is problem now, well it starts of kind of rock/bluesy, so there is going to be a slow jazzy part where I wonder which chords to pick.
Also I will check out some more variations with some cool chords.
Also Im thinking of only playing lead to drums and bass.
I send you one file too with some ideas for jazzy lead part.
Hey alex, intro/main riff is in G major tonality.
Playing: G-A-B-D-E
Then C and D powerchord. Then I have a few, what do you call them? Augmented powerchords? I forgot, they are a little everywhere, but everything is in G.
Also alex, do you still have your rock shuffle backing track? coudlt find it on soundcloud
Here you go Alex
First lead part which focus more on rythm and groove.
I took the advice from cosmin here on the forum to slowly build up a song.
The rythm sounded a little thin just in the beginning to play with (it would of course get better with bass and proper recording)
But I choose to play a inverted G chord just in the beginnig, you hear "dadada-da"
That went well to my ears
Then there will be the second variation, then the stop, go back to first then the jazz comes in
Added some bass, got kind of groovy now to my ears
Its in G, like I said in previous post what I play, I will come with some more info if needed, since this is only the first riff idea.
There is a second which needs some variations, and the jazz part of course. everything is 4/4 100 bpm
Great idea alex the fusion master shredding over my track, that would give some inspiration
I changed my mind a little, I will do a jazz part (i will show you it soon) playing right after the rock riff, then a slow, mixed jazz/fusion part will come
Its not going well with ideas.. cant get anything to work..
here is one that sounds crap when i try to play along:
sorry for the bad tone, just picked a tone to show u
Yes I know, I tried to mix it up a little didnt get good.
I use F# dim, a7,b7,a13 and some other chords
I know exactly how i want it to sound now but.cant get a good progression to fit
I will give you a few both rythm and lead examples Alex!
The thing is I went away from the idea to create a sudden jazz piece, It could be cool but I wanted to to like a hybrid jazz and rock rythm, it was a little hard so I will try a few other things.
I am going to have 3 parts tough, 1 intro/main riff 1 verse, 1 chorus rythm (which will be an emotional part).
Actually the first idea jazz part was cool to jam to now, that I went clean, I dont know why I used such a bad tone.
here is the backing track, the chords for the jazz part are:
The "G" is that little starting lick which is E E G A
G F#dim A7 B7
G F#dim B7 Bm7
G F#dim A7 B7
G F#dim A13 A7
Now have little jam yourself, on all parts.
And then comment on the jazz part, if its not so good to your ears, what you be altered in the progression?
Here is my playing!
Some things are improv, but the ideas you can hear in the track
The idea on the more jazzy part is exactly what I heard in my head and transfered to the fretboard
thanks alex
Yes I will make it a little more structured and with better timing and also get a better tone
I used too much distortion
Now a little song structure, first I have the intro/main riff, then the verse which is jazz, then a little pre chorus which is main riff again, and then I will do the slower part, which will be the chorus.
Then after that, should I do a verse again, going for the jazz? and then make a outro with the intro riff?
what do you think?
Jazz part updated, and I have a new idea for the song, a piano lydian part in the middle, and ending it all with some jazz again
Cant come up with a good progression.
The song is in G. It contains the C lydian mode.. so the question is go for G lydian or C lydian to get the same key?
Do you know a good proggression suitable for lydian mode alex?
Hi Alex hope you had a nice christmas
Well lets go back to some fusion training again.
Well I listen to a lot of music and try to pick up things from there and come up with my own, but I need to learn more licks down the fretboard too, so I was thinking of learning greg howes improvistation of sunny, where can I learn some more cool licks?
Also can we pratice playing in changes? We can start from the beginning if you would like
We have done some pratice over this but we can go back and start from there
I just noticed, good luck Alex
thanks for all help
