Hello guys! Welcome to my new workout based on timing available for everybody at GMC that want to master this fundamental element of music.
During my more than 8 years working at GMC I noted that timing is one of the main problems that beginner/intermediate students have and most of them don't know how to work on it. In the last months, we started to experiment with some very simple assignments and we discovered how important is to start with really simple stuff before trying to adjust timing on licks and improvisations.
That's why I decided to create this thread in which I will give weekly assignments that should be worked every day during 7 days.
How to practice on these assignments?
Well, as it happens with my other workouts. These are designed to be combined with your current guitar routine. You don't have to switch to this workout and work only on this. It's ok if you practice around 20/30 minutes every day. It's even more helpful if you practice 2 blocks of 20 minutes, maybe one in the morning and another one before you go to sleep.
Some tips to master timing:
- Tap with your foot: Follow the beat with your foot while playing. It's a great trick to feel the groove inside. With practice you won't have to think on timing and groove, you will just have to feel it.
- Move your head and body: Another trick to feel the groove. Try it!
- Before you start the practice, turn off the lights, close your eyes and listen to the backing. Feel the groove, imagine youself playing over it, imagine yourself playing the assignment, visualize your guitar, your fingers and listen to the notes sounding totally tight over the backing.
ASSIGNMENT I
On this first assignment you have to play a single note that can be one from the scale, preferably the root, even with the beat. As this is a workout for beginners and intermediates, I will suggest two different figures:
Beginners (level 1 to 3 in GMC lessons): Play 4th notes over the backing.
Intermediate (level 3 to 5 in GMC lessons): Play 8th notes over the backing.
Backing track in A:
AC_DC_Backing_80.mp3 ( 2.38MB )

DEADLINE: May 12th
Who is in?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Some frequently asked questions:
1. Who can join? Everybody!
2. Do I have to submit audio or video? If possible to let me check your progress! We can also meet at the chat-room and you show me how you play this using your webcam.
3. Is it only for beginners? No! It's for beginner and intermediate players. Even if you think that you are a master of timing, give these exercises a chance and maybe you will be surprised.
4. How much does this workout cost? When you become a successful guitar player and come to play to my country, I want free tickets!
5. Why timing is important? Are you serious????
PS: IF YOU'RE WORKING ON THIS WORKOUT PLEASE LET ME KNOW AT THIS THREAD AND THEN WE WILL ARRANGE HOW I CHECK YOUR PROGRESS.

Hey Gab,
I'm in. Don't know how I'm going to fit everything in though
Ear training, bending to pitch, new solo, Fu Manchu, collabs and now timing
Please excuse my ignorance but what exactly are 4th notes? Is it four notes per bar or four notes per beat? Sorry for not knowing this basic information.
Cheers
Phil
Hi Phil! Thanks for this fantastic question since I think that even the absolute beginner students will now exactly what they have to do on assignment 1.
Quarter notes and eight notes are different note values (Check what note values means http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Note_value). This is how each of them look on the score:
Here you can open the same on guitar pro to listen how they sound:
Quarter___Eight_notes.gp5 ( 1.55K )
: 177
Finally, here you have two examples over the backing track submitted on the assignment to show exactly what you should play, depending on your level.
Quarter notes:
Example_quarter_notes.mp3 ( 445.91K )
: 219
Eight notes:
Example_eight_notes.mp3 ( 445.91K )
: 199
Please let me know if this is clear now.
Thanks Gab,
I think I get it.
4th notes = 1 2 3 4???
8th notes = 1&2&3&4????
Am I correct?
Maybe for beginners it would be good to record 4th and 8th notes with just a metronome for backing.
Thank you for your dedication in helping us Gab. I'm sure I speak for everyone in saying we appreciate it
Phil
Hi Phil, the idea is that less advanced GMCers play 4th notes over the backing while more advanced try 8th notes. This is not an easy task, you'll notice just by playing, recording and then checking what you've played so even if you don't consider a totally beginner, it's ok to start trying with 4th notes.
I didn't get this:
4th notes = 1 2 3 4???
8th notes = 1&2&3&4????
Ah! now I got it, yes, you're right!
About listening to how 4th and 8ve notes sound, I shared a guitar pro file with both so I think that beginners can check it from there. If anybody needs more help with this first workout, please ask me.
I wonder who is working on these first assignment....
I will be working on them tomorrow night along with everything else. Got a lot of catching up to do
I'm in, Gabriel. I want to continue the work in timing, so that seems perfect to me !
Should I post an audiotrack with me playing in the backing track ? The same note all the time ?
Hello Gabriel
Here is my take :
https://soundcloud.com/david-enrique-20/timing-exercise-1
Thank you !
You know from my REC takes that my timing needs work
Count me in - should have a recording in a day or two.
Gab, is it alright if I do the 8th notes like the lesson requires and then do a separate recording for triplets? You know from the Neoclassical & Epic Metal Rhythm REC takes I did that the triplets give me a bit of a fight
Hello Gab,
I've posted my take in my thread and also here.
https://soundcloud.com/gmcphil-1/acdc-timing-quarter-notes
https://soundcloud.com/gmcphil-1/acdc-timing-eighth-notes
It was pretty hard I thought as the rhythm seems to be offbeat, also I only seem to be able to fit in 3 notes per bar but they don't seem to fit perfectly and sometime land on the beginning of the bar and sometimes just before (accord to my DAW anyway). I put the example in and that seems the same. Any ideas?
Cheers
Thanks Gab,
It's not the easiest backing track to practice with Lot os distraction with the rhythm but it's all good.
I can't work out how 8th note triplets would go, I've just tried but got totally confused
Cheers
Phil
hehehe, yeah, that's one of the advantages of this kind of workout, we are working over REAL MUSIC.
Don't worry about triplets now, we'll work on it later.
Good job Daeron! Your playing sound tight most of the time, there some little moments when you are not totally tight, and maybe you can pay more attention to go even tighter when you play this, mostly when the song starts and when the parts changes, but your timing is very good. You are now ready for the next assignment. Congrats!
Thank you, Gabriel. I'll continue working on timing, of course, and I'll wait for the next assignment !
I think I've worked out part of my timing issue. It may be a tricky one to fix though. Is hard to explain but I'll try.
My picking hand and foot/head mimic each other. Now this may sound good in theory but, if you think about it, when my for his the floor my pick should hit the string but in my case, the downward movement of my hand stops when my foot hits the floor and starts rising exactly with my foot. Now if you think about that, it means that the string has been hit before my foot has hit the floor. It's as though there is a solid rod connecting my foot and hand and the string sits somewhere around the middle of the stroke.
I hope this make sense. Has anyone got any ideas how to fix this bad habit? There was an interview that I stumbled across in my car recently on BBC Radio 4. The person being interview was the legendary Carol Kaye. She was talking about working with a metronome, she said "When you can'thear the metronome then you've got good time, if you can still had the metronome then you don't have good time". Maybe I should add some metronome practice to my list.
If you want to hear the very interesting program you can listen http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b05nk25s the bit about the timing is at 22:30. To listen, once the link has opened, click the icon in the bottom left corner of the picture. It really is worth a listen, very interesting, it's mainly a historical documentary about so there isn't much about technique etc but still very interesting. Also a full documentary on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q4JWqK6r6N4
Sorry to go off topic but I remembered this radio program while I was writing this post and thought I should share it, here seemed as good place as any

Hey Gab - sorry for the delay!!

Triplets are going to be the death of me
Hi Chris, 4th and 8th notes are sounding really good on that take. Triplets not, so it would be good to hear your playing only triplets over the backing to see if the problem are the triplets or just going from 8th to triplets.
OK, I haven't had much practice since I got back from Spain, been catching up with work
Anyway here is a quick take, I played a mix of 4th, 8th and 4th triplets (I think )
I'll be getting stuck into my routine again now.
https://soundcloud.com/gmcphil-1/acdc-mixed-notes-and-triplets
Cheers Gab
Thanks for that, Gab! I just gave that lesson a shot and my mind is already about to explode
Switching between the 8ths and triplets is going to be a fun challenge.
Cool! My idea was to explode your mind...
hahaha you can use the guitar pro to practice along with the rhythms and change tempo.
Hi Phil, yeah, you are not playing the triplets tight. The problem here is that drums are not going in triplets so it is more difficult to keep this rhythm without any other instrument following you. However this is something that happens a lot when we are soloing on rock and blues. Phrases usually incorporate triplets combined with other note values.
You said that you can play triplets tight with metronome, so the problem is exactly be able to play triplets over a binary backing. The first exercise that you should do is to be able to think the rhythm and sing it over the backing. So, this is what you will do:
- Play and listen to the backing track. Close your eyes, and try to imagine triplets sounding over it. The 4th notes beat must be your guitar for the first triplet of each group of 3. Try to focus on it instead of the 8th notes hi hat.
- Once you can think it, sing it. Sing the triplets over the backing for a while.
- After 5 minutes of thinking and singing the rhythm, pick up your guitar and try to do it for 5 minutes.
- After 5 minutes of practice, repeat the whole process.
Do this every day, 2 or 3 times per day. Record a new take in 4 days and share it here.
Thanks Gab,
I'll do my best.
Hello Gabriel
I am working on the timing exercice (Guitar Pro) that you gave in an earlier message and it's interesting. I was working something like this but with one measure of each. In your exercice there are mixed triplets with 8th notes and triplet with 16th notes.
And that makes me wonder how to play triplets... I explain !
With a measure of triplets only, I play : down-up-down / up-down-up / down-up-down / up-down-up and I'm ready for the next mesure with my pick to down. But when I mix 8th notes with triplets, I have a problem : down-up / down-up-down / and then should I play up-down or down-up ? Normally, I think it should be down-up with a strict alternate picking. I'll not work this until your answer, I don't want to learn a bad thing.
Hi Daeron, that's a very clever question.
The answer is not exact since there is not an unique way to do it. This depends on many things, the tempo you are playing, the dynamics you want to get, and also your own style. As this is an exercise it's ok to work on this one using strictly alternate picking technique so you would be starting groups of 4 16 notes with upstrokes and things like that. This will make this a very good exercise for your right hand too.
In a musical situation it can happen that you decide to combine alternate picking with only downstrokes or even economy picking in order to get different dynamics and intentions in your playing.
So, as the great Petrucci suggests, the best is to be able to play the same lick with different techniques and picking combinations. This will allow express yourself smoother.
Hi Gab,
I did the exercise you suggested in the rec-zone. Here is my attempt with Quarter notes

Hey Gab!
Before I start the second assignment I took an attempt at the mind blowing exercise you gave me
I posted it in our mentoring thread
Hello Gab,
Ok here is my latest attempt, (hardly any practice) at assignment 1, It starts off a little out of time, that rhythm guitar totally throws me . I think it is better, it may not be perfect but should I move on to assignment 2 to catch up with the others?

3 days to go! Anybody else working on Assignment II?
I'll get mine to you tomorrow. Triplets @ 80bpm and 4th + 8th @ 90bpm.
I'm working on it too ! I'll post my take later in the evening.
Here you go Gab. Not practised these much been busy with other things but posted anyway

4th & 8th 90bpm

Hi Phil! Thanks for the samples!
This audios show that you are comfortable with 4th notes, a bit less comfortable with 8th notes and even less with triplets. This means that you need to focus on 8th and triplets during the next days of practice. This workout sets the roots for everything else you are practicing so it would be important to dedicate at least 15 / 20 minutes every day during this week to see what happens.
Will do Gab, thanks. I had only had about 5 minutes practice since the last one, and that was right before this recording. As you know, I am back on it now.
Cheers buddy
Hi Gab !

My take on 8th notes :

And I try to make a take on triplets but I'm still not ready. I hope I can have something good this evening.
Edit : here my try on triplets but I'm not satisfied. There are some moments when I loose the beat... I have to practice more !
https://soundcloud.com/david-enrique-20/timingexercise2-triplets
Hello Gab,
I've just spent 15 minutes before we set off for our micro holiday, looping bar 3 (triplets) in GP5 at 80%. I was wondering if there is any way to get that into my DAW?? It would be good to listen back so that I can analyse it. I think it might be useful to hear what I'm doing while I not playing and it is less distracting than the backing track. Once I've got it with the GP5 I can move onto the backing track
Hope this makes sense.
Cheers
That makes sense Gab. Thank you. I'll try it tomorrow if we get back early enough or Monday. Is it ok for me to use this method or would you rather me only to use the backing?
Thanks
Hi Gab,
so here is the 8th and triplets
https://soundcloud.com/petr-14/acdc90-8-3
Petr
Good job Petr! Triplets are getting tighter, so you are on the right track with this. There is some room to make this sound even more precise to keep on practicing until I share the new assignment.
ASSIGNMENT III
Hello friends! Congrats to all the students that are following successfully here and at your mentoring threads.
In this new assignment, we will cover some new patterns that are commonly used in both rhythm and lead guitar.
Pattern I:
The first one is a group of four 16th notes. You'd play 4 notes per beat and the figure looks like this:
Pattern II:
The second pattern combines one 8th note with two 16th notes and looks like this:
Pattern III:
Finally, the third pattern combines two 16th notes with one 8th, the same than the previous but with a different order.
Do you want to hear how these ones sound?
Check out this guitar pro file, listen and play along with it:
16th___8th_patterns.gp5 ( 1.81K )
: 97
So, the exercise is: Download the following backings. Choose the one that has a tempo that is comfortable for you and get used to play each of the patterns. Practice one at a time, and share 3 recordings here to let me check.
Then, if you master the patterns, combine them and record a 4th take with everything together.
Timing_Workout___Assignment_3.zip ( 18.68MB )

Time to work!!
Ok Gab, first attempts at 70 bpm
https://soundcloud.com/gmcphil-1/pattern-1-70bpm
https://soundcloud.com/gmcphil-1/pattern-2-70bpm
https://soundcloud.com/gmcphil-1/pattern-3-70bpm
https://soundcloud.com/gmcphil-1/patterns-1-2-3-70bpm
Mixing them together is the hardest, takes a lot of concentration at the moment.
Thanks
Awesome work Phil! You can play these ones at this tempo! There are two next steps:
- Accentuating a bit the notes that go with beat.
- Working on faster backings.
Congrats!
Hey everybody! Please don't miss assignment III: http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=54317&view=findpost&p=712693
I'm working on the 3rd assignment for 3 days. I'm able to play it correctly at 70/80 bpm on Guitar Pro but not faster at the moment. And with the backing track, it's difficult but I work !
Should have something with you tonight
As promised Gab
Only had around 15 minutes in total on this since last time, as explained work is difficult at the moment
https://soundcloud.com/gmcphil-1/patterns-1-2-3-100bpm
Cheers
Thanks Gab
I know it's off but wanted to get something to you
Cheers
Hi Gab, here are my attempts at 70 BPM
Hi Ann! Thanks for the new takes.
The audio 1 is sounding very good, you are playing four 16th notes tight with the backing at this tempo. Audio 2 is not tight yet, you tend to play the two 16th notes a bit faster than you should so please re-check this pattern. Finally number 3 is better than the previous but there is also some room to make it sound tighter.
Remember to count the four 16th notes internally even for patterns 2 and 3 while you play them. This will help you to play both much tighter.
Practice for 3 days and share a new take.
Hi Gab
I've been working on this assignment each day a little bit. Here are my takes :
- Pattern 1 :
https://soundcloud.com/david-enrique-20/timingexercice3-70-pattern1
- Pattern 2 :
https://soundcloud.com/david-enrique-20/timingexercice3-70-pattern2
- Pattern 3 :
https://soundcloud.com/david-enrique-20/timingexercice3-70-pattern3
I tried to mix them but hum... at a moment, I always lose my points of reference. Maybe I should count 1,2,3,4.
Hi Daeron! Fantastic work! This samples sound very good. Congrats!
You are ready for faster tempos, and to keep on practicing combining all.
Keep on the good job!
hey !!!! i MUST work on too !!!
why i did not notice this very interresting topic.........
-"darling, not necessary to wait for me tonight...... i have some work to do...."
Laurent
hahaha you're welcome.
Hello Gab,
As discussed in my thread, not had much practise lately but had a good go tonight. Here is another multiple pattern take at 100bpm

Hi laurent, your playing is tight on this samples, well done. However, patterns 2 and 3 are sounding the same. You are playing pattern 2 on both audios, do you notice it?
Hi Gabriel
ho ! i do not notice...... may i do it again ?
Laurent
ok i'll re-done both !
Laurent
Great.
ok, seem on the right patern, or maybe i turn crazy

the medley
https://soundcloud.com/dizy-laurent/exo-beat-4-2-90
see ya tonight (for me....)
Laurent
Hi Laurent, please re-check the guitar pro file. Both patterns 2 and 3 can sound the same when you loop them but depending on where you play the 8th note you'll be playing one of the other. On this audio sample, you start with an 8th note while the pattern starts with 2 16ths. As you play it as a loop, all the 8th notes are played over the strong beat of the measure (kick and snare).
Does it make sense?
ok, i see, my brain is buggy !!
Laurent
hahaha this can be confusing. Let me know if you need more help with this.
We talk about it later in v chat
Laurent
Hello Gab,
Here is another, sorry but this slipped my mind too, i got into the feelings collab, you know what I'm like once I get into one of those, everything else goes out of the window
https://soundcloud.com/gmcphil-1/patterns-1-2-3-100-bpm-3
I do agree 100% with your comments to Laurent, it can be confusing when looping #2 and #3 licks, kind of an aural illusion
Cheers
hey phil !! the track is about 1m30 of duration, what about the missing minutes ?
it's so easy
Laurent
Not so easy for me mate
I am OK with a click track but the backing throws me off time
I cut it while I'm ahead
another attempt.....

Laurent
Thanks Gab,
I think the tightness will come with playing over and over. Will we be getting another assignment or should we wait until these are perfect?
Cheers
Phil
Most definitely. Cheers Gab.
ASSIGNMENT IV
Hey guys! This is the new timing assignment. On this one, we'll start working on triplets. Check out how they look in the score:
and this is how they sound with a metronome:
Triplets.gp5 ( 1.57K )
: 93
As you can see, triplets can make that 3 notes have the duration of 2. So if you have a 8th notes triplets, you'll have to play 3 (8th) notes over a beat, where we usually play 2.
The first part of the assignment is to play triplets over the backing track.
The second and third part of this one are to combine triplets with the patterns worked on the previous assignment:
Triplets_combined.gp5 ( 1.55K )
: 90
Triplets_combined_2.gp5 ( 1.55K )
: 88
The combination can be tricky, and even more if you couldn't master assignment III yet, so be patient and work hard!
I started working on the new assignment. But 120bpm will be too fast for me. The limit at the moment is 100bpm and I hae to work to be tight at this tempo.
It's ok mate, please everybody work at its comfortable tempo.
i launch myself..... (no easy in fact ! )
https://soundcloud.com/dizy-laurent/exo-beat-triplet-1-90
90 bpm triplet
Laurent
Here is my first attempt. I haven't mastered any of these assignments and I'm still working on the others but I find triplets the hardest, does anyone else? Also keeping it going for this whole track is hard. For this attempt I had to keep the metronome running with the track. Next post will be without the metronome.
I also find triplets the hardest when you change tempo. Worst case scenario would be triplets over a track where the tempo changes erratically, so 4 bars at 60bpm, then 4 bars at 120bpm, 4 bars at 90 bpm etc.
https://soundcloud.com/gmcphil-1/triplets-90bpm
Cheers Gab
I'm back on this now Gab
Okay, picking up on this one again. 90bpm.
I find I go into a trance after a while and drift out of time I guess mind control is all part of it It's not good but I put it on here anyway
https://soundcloud.com/gmcphil-1/triplets-90bpm-2
Cheers
Hi Phil, yes, this needs more work because you tend to go faster than you should. The triplets are not regular, the first two notes are shorter so the last one of the group of 3 is longer. The 3 notes should have the same duration.
Please keep this exercise into your diary routine. I won't give you complementary stuff for this because I now that you have a lot of to do in your diary practice.
hahahaha this new take is much better so this is the right tempo to practice now. The triplets still need to be tighter but not I'm hear you playing triplets, while on previous takes the rhythm was confusing.
This lesson combines 8th notes with 16th and triplets. Have you ever played it?
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Picking-Hand-Basics/
Ok Gab,
I have not been giving this enough attention lately due to my Darius solo taking my life over I had another go today at 70bpm and just couldn't get it anywhere near, had a go at 80bpm and it's a bit better. Going to start making this my very first part of practise to be sure not to miss it.
https://soundcloud.com/gmcphil-1/triplets-80bpm-1
Cheers
Hello Gab,
OK, you may class this as cheating but I think it is a good idea as a training aid to get the real feel of triplets as I think it's hard for the beginner's mind to do an equal three part split on the beat.
Now if my maths is correct, I set the metronome to 3/4 time at 240 bpm, this should equate triplets in 4/4 time at 80 bpm. I used the metronome to get the feel while I was playing along with the backing.
Do you think this is ok to do for the first stages to get the feeling of pure triplets and then try again without the metronome but, when recording without the metronome, play back with the metronome to see how well you have done?

Hi mate, this is getting better! Yeah, that metronome idea is a good trick to get familiar with this rhythm. However I noted that your performance is similar on both versions, and maybe even better on the "without metronome" one, since the other is a bit like "hurried". Do you note it?
i finish my two lessons about triads, and i'll come back here !
Laurent
ASSIGNMENT V
Ok guys! This new assignment will be based on a GMC lesson from our archive that combines some of the rhythms that we've been covering here: 8th notes, 16th notes and triplets. The lesson is great for alternate picking but it's also a very good excuse to work on your timing skills.
I recommend everybody to start with the slower backings and go for the normal tempo only if you feel comfortable with the previous ones.
This is the link to the lesson: http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Picking-Hand-Basics/
Feel free to share your takes over the slower backings to let me monitor your progress.
Who it in?
Wooohooo, that's my weekend workout that I haven't been doing.
Now I'll have to get stuck in.
Nice one Gab
Back but I've been so busy. Will be on it tomorrow.

i'm in the assignement V

i have done that, the end part seem to be played almost correctly but the sound preset seem so weird....

Hi Laurent. Thanks for the take!
I think that you should work on a slower backing because you are still not able to play the faster parts at the current tempo. So please go for the first or second backing shared on the original lesson, work on it for a few days until you notice that you can play the 16th notes and triplets tight and share a new take, ok?
it's allright !
Laurent
Quick take on this:
I feel like I'm slightly behind the beat all the time. Hmmm...
Hi Cael! Great to find you working here!
You're right, you are not going tight with this one, you tend to go a bit before the beat. This happens with each note value so you definitely need to continue working on this assignment, and maybe give a try to some of the previous ones.
The tasks seem to be easy but they are not. Keeping this kind of practice in our every day practice routine can have a very important impact in our overall playing.
Hi Gabriel,
here's my first work. I think I 'm in front of timming
Hi Farine! Great to see you working on this one!
As you've already noted, you are playing before the beat, you are not going even. Here are some tips to continue working on this.
1. Listen to the backing without playing. Close your eyes and imagine your guitar sounding even there. Do this exercise tof 5 minutes. Tap with your foot while you do it.
2. Pick up your guitar and start playing over the backing. Close your eyes and tapi with your foot.
Do this two steps many times every day and you'll be able to feel the timing and go tight.
Please try it and let me know how it feels.
Hi Gabriel
this is a new take a bit slower
edit: at full speed....

Laurent
Hi Laurent, it's getting better but you still have problems to play tight and clean triplets and 16th notes. Please keep on practicing every day. The best would be to isolate the trickier rhythms and work on them over the backing first, and then get back to the whole lesson.
Hi Gabriel ,
here is my test. I can't work every day but I try a max.
I hope at least there is a little improvement.
Hi Farine! This is getting better! Have you tried the tips that I've shared?
You still need to practice to make this sound tighter but the good news are that you are on the right track with the practice. Remember that it's always more helpful to practice every day, at least 5/50 minutes, so if you find this time maybe before going to sleep, your playing will keep improving.
Keep on the good job!
Hi Gabriel
I post my work on assignment IV at 70bpm :

Triplets combined 2 :

I'll work on the new assignment if this is correct. Thank you !
Hi mate, these takes are not right. You are playing 16th notes in the part that you should be playing triplets. Please re-check the assignment's tasks and let me know if you need any help.
Hey Gab, you can find my take on Assignment #5 http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?s=&showtopic=54803&view=findpost&p=717008
just in case you missed it
Back on it tomorrow. Sorry for my absence
Part 1, full speed.
I need to print this lesson out again, I can never remember the sequence of notes
https://soundcloud.com/gmcphil-1/assignment-5-part-1
Hi Phil, this is on the right track but still has room to make those 8th notes tighter. Sometimes the pair of 8th notes is not totally regular so keep on practicing with all your focus on it.
I've doing assignement I. Can I post it in ?
The deadline has passed...
It's harder than it seems...
Hi Gab !
New attempt on assignment IV. Sorry, I hadn't much time for guitar these days...

I hope that this time I'm working on the right exercice !
Hi Gab,
Im in.
The suggested lesson http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Rhythm-Figures-Workout/
doesnt seem that difficult, everything starts on the beat.
I have been working on your lesson http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Iron-Maiden-For-Beginners/ but for me the timing there is difficult, mostly not starting on the beat. I know the theory, I broke down all the notes to 16th grid so I know where they start using the 1-e-&-a pattern but at the original speed that doesnt seem to be possible to use.
Do you have any suggestion?
Petr

Hi mate, do you mean that you are experimenting problems with this riff?
The pattern starts with the beat but then it has an upbeat feel. Is the upbeat the thing that is giving your problems? Have your practiced upbeat 8th notes over a metronome?
Thank you, Gab ! I'm now working on Assignment V. I like this exercises !
Hi Gab,
yes, that is the riff. An isolated upbeat with metronome is fine, here it is more complex.
I actually got one suggestion from somebody today - I was playing it using alternate picking and the suggestion was to do downstroke for downbeats and upstroke for upbeats, so it would be
Also this riff is not easy for me
but this one is played downstrokes only so the plan above can not be used here.
Petr
Hi mate, good suggestion and graphics. The first thing that you should do to master this kind of rhythms is to be able to reproduce the rhythm with your voice and also with your hand hitting a table or something. Do this for a while over metronome and then over the backing, and you'll incorporate the rhythm much more. Then, get back to your guitar and see what happens.
Hi Gab,
pleae can you check my take of the : http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Rhythm-Figures-Workout/
lesson here

thanks Petr
Good job Petr! This sounds good. I recommend you to continue practicing this one to make the patterns sound even more consistent. Sometimes intensity is irregular and just a few notes don't go tight. But this is REALLY close.
Keep on the good job!
Hey Gab!
You can find my recording http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?s=&showtopic=54803&view=findpost&p=718044
Ok Mad, thanks for notifying here.
ASSIGNMENT VII
Hello GMCers! In this new assignment we will work on a new pattern based on triplets. This time we will cover the combination of 4th with 8th notes on a triplet pattern. Check it out:
and listen how it sound on guitar pro:
Triplets_feel_riff.gp5 ( 1.6K )
: 88
In order to work on this pattern, the lesson recommended is my Muse Style lesson which uses this pattern in every riff. So once you can play the pattern over the backing track, work on some riffs from this lesson, and practice them over the backing track or metronome:
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Muse-Goes-Stoner/
Then, share your recordings here.

I'm still working on the assignment V. I was hoping to be able to play at 90bpm to record on the BT but my max speed is around 85bpm and I don't know how to increase. My right hand isn't able to speed more on 16th notes at the moment.
Should I record with the backing track decreased at around 80bpm ? Or continue and wait until I can reach 90 bpm ?
Be patient and increase tempo by 1 or 2 beats each day. Also, visualize your goal. Stop playing, listen to the 100 bpm backing and imagine yourself playing the exercise over it, some air guitar is welcome. Do this during 3/5 minutes every day and then get back to practice.
About sharing takes at slower tempos.... yes! You can do it here.
Hi Gab!
I just uploaded my take straight into the http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=54973&pid=718938&st=0&#entry718938!
ASSIGNMENT VIII
Hello guys! In this new assignment we will work on the previous concepts but with two differences. We will get into more musical stuff and we will add another important element that is called Dynamics. When playing solos or riffs, we don't play every note with the same intensity, we use different intensities to give different accents and feels to what we play.
Please listen to this lesson, try to find out what figures I'm using. Start tapping with your foot while listening and count how many notes I play at each beat. Then, pay attention to dynamics, listen how I accentuate different notes, sometimes I go with the beat, while sometimes I go upbeat. Try to discover when I do each thing.
Learn to play the lesson, practice it over the backing tracks and share your takes here (and/or at REC program)
