Not only one of the best melodic death metal records ever, it's THE MOST INCREDIBLE Guitar-based music you'll hear this year. Definately the best Arch Enemy LP so far...

...cool review by the way

I hated this album, for all the pre-album hype that the vocals were going to be with the minimum amount of effects they are just awful, boring, monotonous and totally effected up to the hilt, I have heard much better female screamers.

This is such a typical Arch Enemy album that it failed to inspire anything in me. It's nothing new and they're sounding old, when I compare this to "Wages Of Sin" it's the same thing essentially, a few half memorable tracks and the rest just uneventful.

How did i know you would hate this? smile.gif

I am openly controversial!

Nah, I dont mind Arch Enemy, but its just the same old, people worship Angela because of who she is, not what she does.

My mate was going on about how epic this album was, so I got it and was sadly disappointed as I suspected I might be.

I liked it smile.gif

Well, i wouldnt call this album Epic, its not that style at all, And if you look at "Who Angela Gossow Is" and "What Angela Gossow Does" they can be viewed as the same or close to it.

Like...

Angela Gossow is a death metal vocalist for Arch Enemy, thats who she is
Angela Gossow sings for a death metal band, Thats what she does

Maybe thats where there going, But if there "Worshiping" her for just being in Arch Enemy, thats a different thing, if they dont appreciate her skills and unique stlye of growling (My Oppinion) or her lyrical abilities, i dont see a reason for them to 'worship' her. But thankfully to me, she has an amazing voice and is a great songwriter! smile.gif

Oh and dont let other people ruin the album for you, if they bantering on about it for reasons you find stupid, just ignore it, try to give it another listen, but put any preconceived judgements aside, maybe youll find it more enjoyable.

I dont really want to create any argument here, I just dont think Arch Enemy is that varied and I'm really broadcasting my own take on what they do, not anyone elses here, everyone else I know loves this album.

However,

Angela is the vocalist in Arch Enemy, she is female.

Angela does what she does best, on every album so far, with no variation or deviation at all.

Its not that its not good, thats not what irritates me, I cant really argue that it isnt without some technical merit and some of the stuff is quite catchy. Its just that Arch Enemy havent changed anything, this is borderline Arch Enemy and I think its getting rather tedious now.

Also, I cant help but wonder if they would actually be famous if she wasnt female, if it was a male growler doing what she does, in the same band, with the same range, people would just be labeling them as another melodic death band, do you not think?

I'm not sexist, I just think that this is a classic case of getting famous on who you are, not how good you are at it.

Great metal band
I cant say i like the vocals but for what there into they fit perfect.I know this may be off topic but imagine getting that woman pregnant and having to deal with her and the hormones for 9 months ohmy.gif She would be like looking at you screaming death scarring the hell out of you laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif

Dont know why but that thought just crossed my mind biggrin.gif blink.gif

You didn't listen to the record carefull enough! On ''Revolution Begins'' she sings at the edge to almost clean vocals, what has never been before in her style or Arch Enemy at all.

I'm quite a big Arch Enemy fan, and I like this album, but I have to agree, it's nothing new. Pretty much same thing all round, same as the last 3 albums.

But yeah I like it anyway!

Posted by: The Uncreator Sep 28 2007, 03:28 AM

I see more differences, and more variation, for example the neoclassical licks in Night Falls Fast and in Vultures as well, especially vultures, cant compare that to any other AE song in my oppinion, that hasnt been done on any previous albums before, the overall feel is different,

And as for arch enemy getting famous for angela being a female? doubt it, seeing as you hear the band before you see them most of the time, and everyone i knew who i showed arch enemy too loved them before they found out there singer was female, but that just where i live.

This album feels different to me, Christopher is back in, the atmosphere just felt reenergized to me, Either way, its all oppinion, if you enjoy the album crank it up high!!

I'm a bit unsure whether i should buy this album. I 'like' arch enemy but i don't think i could really call myself a fan. I like songs from them but not whole albums really. The guitar playing does impress me and if it's just as good or even better on this album maybe i should buy it. And i find Angelas voice a bit dodgey at times but we'll see maybe i'll listen to a few songs first

Nah man, I've just given it a listen, she's screaming onto pitch, not clean vocals at all. smile.gif

Out of interest has anyone heard any of the old AE stuff with Johan Liiva? I think it is far better than the modern day stuff.

Posted by: VinceG Oct 6 2007, 03:53 AM

I like old Arch Enemy. Stigmata and Burning Bridges are classic AE in my book. The sound became different when Angela joined, main reason why I never grassped the new AE.

Posted by: Owen Oct 6 2007, 04:09 AM

I've got a first pressing of the Wages of Sin - the one with the bonus cd, its got some of their work with Liiva on it and I have to say he absaloutley wipes the floor with Gossows work on the other disc. It doesnt rely on overly processed vocals at all and its just so much stronger and rawer, Liiva himself has stated actually;

"being replaced by a vocalist that is both mediocre and self-confident at the same time just doesn´t make sense to me"

Maybe thats arrogant, but I see the truth in that.

Posted by: The Uncreator Oct 7 2007, 10:30 AM

Old AE is pretty good, Black Earth, Stigmata all that. But it lacked depth to me, when angel joined and started writing lyrics, i thought it progressed amazingly, although some of AE's coolest riffs are there firsts, like "Bury Me An Angel", classic stuff right there!

Ok, I'll let you off laugh.gif

To be honest this CD is not Arch Enemy's best work although technically the guitar work is fantastic it lacks the bite of either wages of sin or anthems of rebellion.

Answering the singer question who is better Johan or Angela?

In my opinion it has to be Angela for one simple reason the live show, I have seen them at least 6 times and I must say that the sound is far clearer the performance more moving and the showmanship is far better than the Johan era (mainly because he also played bass live and so was rooted to the spot). having said that burning bridges is absoluely amazing particularly bridge of destiny!!

Posted by: The Uncreator Nov 17 2007, 10:54 PM

I think its Arch Enemy's best, that was obvious laugh.gif

But yeah, ive seen em live a few times, and Angela's presence on stage can compared to that of an angry Demon General wink.gif

Posted by: steve25 Nov 19 2007, 04:22 AM

Well i've heard a few people say this is amazing now so i'm thinking of taking a trip to HMV and buying it. Even if it's not their best work, as long as it sounds good, which is what matters to me, who cares.

Posted by: Toni Suominen Dec 13 2007, 04:51 PM

Although I think that this new album was pretty much the same old Arch Enemy and there's really nothing new on there, its still great!

Dont fix it if it ain't broken, right? wink.gif smile.gif

Posted by: The Uncreator Dec 13 2007, 09:32 PM

I thought the Neoclassical influence showed well on a few songs, and that wasnt anything they did on previous albums.

Posted by: Overkiller Dec 27 2007, 03:52 PM

This album is such a great piece of work! I do not think it's the best AE album so far, but it certainly is amazing.
To be honest, I don't like Johan Liiva's vocals, I think he's trying too hard. Angela is far better.
Arch Enemy has never disappointed me, and never will. So I really look forward seeing them live soon. wink.gif

Excellent review UnCreator. By excellent, I mean that your views perfectly paralleled mine laugh.gif This is my favorite album, and has been ever since I first heard it. It's an album that blows you away right off the bat, but even more so the more you listen to it. It's so inspiring, in fact, that I've been learning every song on the album and now I only have a couple left. I even bought the issue of Young Guitar with the Amott brothers showing off some of the new riffs so I could make sure to learn at least those ones accurately! I think that this, along with Nile's "Ithyphallic", is not only best metal album of the year, but perhaps of the century!

And on Angela's vocals... I find them to be improved, personally. The lyrics are deeper, and I think her vocals are overall more dynamic. I love when she does that kinda... hissy-gurgley-scream thing (that description makes it sound horrible, i know, buts its the only way i could explain it).

I'm not even going to comment on the guitars... since it's Arch Enemy, nothing needs to be said... incredible melodies, incredible solos, beautiful harmonies... its all here.

Just a quick update: If this album was a woman, I'd marry it.

Yes, I'm STILL obsessed with it. I REALLY think that Angela's vocals are better on this album, there's so much more life to them, so much more organic and dynamic and just.. whoa.

Posted by: The Uncreator Apr 25 2008, 08:52 PM

If this album was a woman..... Well im not permitted to reveal details... smile.gif

For those of you who haven't already seen it, the video for "I Will Live Again" FINALLY aired on headbangers ball and youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zPIk7SpldC8

Delicious is all i can say.

Oh, and I've made it to the final song "Vultures" in my quest to learn all of the songs on the album... and what a finale it is! 5 challenging solos to somehow memorize...
