Any of you guys use the pomodoro concept for practising? I recently learned about this when I was watching some people do studying live on YouTube with this method. Not music related, but school studying.

Such as this guy. It's a week old stream though, but he's been doing it for about a year live.

Here's a video about what it is:

And here's a video about the pomodoro concept in regards to guitar.

I've thought about it after doing the Coursera Learning How To Learn course

BUT

If I'm practising something and get into the flow, I don't want to break it just because 15 mins is up.

Maybe on a day where I'm not inspired and motivated it might be useful.

I had no idea it had a name but thats how I work (pretty much).

I don't find it as helpful for creative stuff like composing much etc. so the time can easily pass 20 min.s but if its lets say a song mixing then to keep my ears fresh I don't pass 20 min.s.

Downside is it becomes a burden when working with others on a project, you get used to the breaks and when not having them it brings you down rather quickly.

Yes, my issue is that very often I am not motivated, so maybe trying to find drive through a disciplined schedule can help. I rely a lot on "do I want to or do I not want to do it"/motivation, and it's very fickle and doesn't often get me anywhere laugh.gif

I mean, I've used timed schedule practice before in that having a clock countdown 10 minutes where I will practice some exercise, but it's not often that I have done it. I've also found an app that can get a countdown like the pomodoro technique while it also cuts off any access your computer has to the internet untill the timer runs out. I might try that, as internet can be a big distraction laugh.gif

It sounds like we're very much alike.
I came across Tim Miller and his 2121 approach to arppegios
I got as far as creating some diagrams but haven't done anything about getting past the academic side of it to the practical.

An app that blocks my internet browser would be effective for me at least for scales and arppegio / Triad stuff where I just need a metronome

Yup, I often set these things up in my mind where I "just need to do this or that before I start the actual practice", i.e. needing the right charts, needing the right tools, needing the right guitar etc. Sometimes we just need to jump straight into it without overthinking and overplanning smile.gif Sometimes action gets you the furthest.

I've come up with something this week and it all stems from having my holiday home. I have a MyFi router with a sim card in, I pay for 30gb per month but can increase to unlimited for just one month if I want to which I will when down there for two weeks or more as we run my laptop, my tablet, my wife's tablet and my phone on it.

Anyway I came up with an idea to save using as much data. Have a folder on your desktop, download all lesson videos into it that you need, put everything else that you need in there like GP files, TAB etc. that way you're not using data by keep looking at the same video every day.

To extend this, at home, I'm going to start switching off the wi-fi on my computer before I shut it down (I know I can switch it back on but there has to be some discipline. Then when i get to my computer it won't be connected, I will be more inclined to go into my "Guitar Practise" folder than go straight to the GMC forum and down the rabbit hole of clicking that one YouTube link that leads to a click fest.

When practise is finished I can either re-connect (remembering to switch off the wi-fi before shutting down), or just go downstairs with my wife and use my tablet.

I'm going to see how this helps. I will view Gab's feedback while we "watch" the news before my wife has her shower and I go and practise. Hopefully I can get more done.

Cheers

Let us know how it works for you smile.gif

I think I need something more strict, i.e. that app/software that cuts off internet access permanently for say 2 hours (I read about some apps/software where it's really difficult to turn back on). I'm kinda preparing mentally for it.
