GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ Up In Flames Collab

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Sep 3 2015, 02:19 PM

Hello guys!!

I’d like to invite everybody to join my new VIDEO COLLAB called “Up In Flames Collab”,
based on the backing track from my lesson in the style of In Flames: http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/In-Flames-Style-Lesson/

Backing track:  Up_In_Flames_Backing_165.mp3 ( 1.74MB ) : 316

Jamtrack:  Jamtrack.mp3 ( 8.23MB ) : 283

Key: Cm
Scales suggested: C minor & C pentatonic minor
Tempo: 165 bpm

The idea is that you create your own solos over this backing track, and share your files both audio and video here. At the end of the collab I'll mix everything, take the stronger parts and get a cool sounding track.

This is a video collab so I’ll also need videos from you playing the takes once you got the final one.

This thread will work as a workout so please feel free to start posting takes in progress, to let me give you feedback and comments to help you polish your takes.

Deadline: October 3rd

http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/scalegenerator

http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/scalegenerator

Important Info:
This is a "video" collab, so I will need audio & video from you. You should be sending exactly these 3 files:

Audio File 1: This file must be a mix of your solo and the backing track.
Audio File 2: This file must be only your guitar solo (no backing)
Video File: Video of you playing the solo. (audo isn't important in this one, it can be the one that the camera captures)

How to share the files? You upload post both audio and video here, or use youtube (for video) and soundcloud (for audio), but please remember to allow downloads when sharing.

Let me know if you have any other question about how to participate!

FINAL MIX AND COMMENTS:

Hello guys! I’m happy to share the final video for this collab!

As you could see this instrumental track has become a killer metal song with vocals. While I was mixing the solos for this one, I was thinking that it could be a great hit with some catchy vocal melodies so I started experimenting with my voice. I wrote some lyrics and shared a draft inviting any screamer GMCer to help me singing this one.

The first that appeared was Todd who recorded really dark and aggressive vocals that helped a lot to make my vocals darker. He shared at the thread the effects that he used to get those diabolic vocals.

Then, the big surprise of this one was Cael, who shared a vocal take that blowed my mind! His vocals are so powerful and deep and fit great with this tune. That’s why, after some experimenting with different mixes, I decided to let him alone in the verse section.
I think that many students get scared of this collab because they felt that it was too fast or too difficult and honestly it’s a pity that you missed joining this one. Even 1 phrase, a lick, an harmonization, or a scream could make you be part of this amazing hit. So now you know, don’t miss the next one!

Special thanks to Phil for sharing alternative lyrics. I didn’t use them because I am with sore throat because of some kind of virus and I couldn’t sing the parts again, so we had to use the original lyrics.

Congrats Huargo on your amazing solo for this one. Each part of your solo is brilliant, tasty and fits great with the backing. I focused mostly on making this one a “song” but your solo could be an instrumental version. Great tapping and fast licks too.

I’d also like to say thanks to WeePee for your great solo for this one! It’s awesome how good your solo connects with Kristofer take, there are some palm muted phrases that were so close, you both should make a collab!

And finally also congrats and thanks Kris and Todd for your amazing takes and videos for this one.

Lyrics:
Do you want play guitar?
Do you want to be a guitar hero?
Stop seaching for solution
GMC is your place.

Run for your life
everybody has a mission
follow your heart
and reach to the sky

Great! Looking forward your takes. Please use my feedback on the improvisation course as your guidelines for working on this one too. Simple and tasty melodies can work great here.

Been away for a while traveling and such. Question for Gab.......before fiddling around to look for solo ideas I wanted to learn the backing first. I think there is a mistake/typo in the original tab for Up in Flames in lesson tab 4 for the backing guitar. As presently written it is......

Ab5-Bb5-C5....Ab5-Bb5-C5....Ab5-Bb5-C5....Ab5-Bb5-G5

When I believe it should be

Ab5-Bb5-C5....Ab5-Bb5- G5 ....Ab5-Bb5-C5....Ab5-Bb5-G5....

I could be wrong, my ears are getting old and the backing track is low under the solo lines.

Hi mate, the length is ok!

This is a good first take. I think that there are some cool ideas to take from this one to continue polishing. The idea that goes from 00:11 to 00:30 sounds interesting. It has some Maiden vibes that fit great with the backing. It would be good to re-learn it, and adjust some notes choices to make it go better with the backing track, and also adjust timing. This idea could be repeated on the whole verse, and maybe add some Maidenish harmonization.

Then, the other two parts, pre chorus and chorus, I like the fact that you go for simpler melodies, but you have to define more the lines and note choices. For example, the note at 00:46, it's a fourth if you relate it with the chord sounding. It's a fourth played in whole note, that's not a cool choice to start a chorus. Try to tend more to thirds, fifths and roots for the longer notes.

So to summarize, you have a good base here, please adjust the things that I've marked and share a new take. Let's slowly polish your take.

Deal?

Hi mate! It's a killer idea!

Please polish timing on the faster part as well as cleanness. Also, your tone is a bit boomy, try adjusting your EQ, lowering low frequencies and enhancing some presence.

Thanks much smile.gif I went for the throat given the full on style of the backing and it worked out better than I hoped smile.gif P.S. The "Single String Work" licks are going to be part of my next GMC VID LESSON in the VID LESSONS SECTION. It's very similar to the single string work in one of my fave collabs ever with Ben Higgins.

I don't know if this is useful to you, but I try to not find out where my limits are. Simply because if I enter a collab with the mindset "I can't quite do it" it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.

However if I approach with with the "I'll find a way" mindset - it can give birth to no creative solutions.

As an example, maybe it will be easier if you play it using open strings the Todd way? (and stay on just one string)

Or what I like to do is pick the first two notes, and then play the coming two notes with legato while you picking hand gets to rest (for a split second). With this stuff 90% of the audience things you are picking all the notes (or 90% of the people that care, I should say).

Or maybe combine both of the above suggestions?

Here's my try:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/mrm0qif2s7a0rez/first%20try.mp3?dl=0

It starts with a bend from

e-----13----------------
b-----16-18-16-13---

then that longer run is

d--------------------------------------------------------------------------------15----------------------------15--16--18
a----------------------------------------------------------------15--16--18------18--16--15--16--18----------------
f-----------------13----------------------------13--15--17---------------------------------------------------------------
c 13--15--17------17--15--13--15--17-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

d--16--18--20--(X2)--18--20--22--(X2) 22b23
a----------------------------------------------------------

Notice that I have tuned to a Drop C like that backing track is.

What do you think ? It's still a demo so it's little bit sloppy but I'll make better one after your advices

Cheers

Hi mate, I think that the fact that you used drop C tuning has confused you about the scale that you are using. The notes that you are playing seem to be part from Eb minor scale or something close to it, you are not using Cm.

Please re-check the scale that you are using.

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Sep 23 2015, 03:35 PM

Now we are talking! There are cool ideas and phrases on this one.

I would re-check some of the longer notes used on this solo to avoid resolving phrases on notes that are not part of the chord, and even less on fourths as it happens at 00:08 where you resolve the phrase with a C while the backing plays G major. Listen to that moment, don't you feel that the notes isn't the best choice there, do you note anything that doesn't work there just by ear? It's important to polish our ear enough to be able to identify these things even without being all the time thinking on intervals.

By the way, that's a problematic chord on this backing because it's a G major which indicates that you have to change one note from the scale that you are using to make it sound good. You have to switch Bb by B, and this last note B which is the third from G major is the best choice at this moment. For example, at 00:15 try playing C and then B instead of B and Bb and notice the difference.

On the second part I feel that the licks are cool but shorter ideas that end on a good target would be more effective. The patterns start moving and keep on moving and moving, without a clear resolution. Try resolving on the thirds of the chords and your solo will have a more defined phrasing.

Great! Just some details to adjust:

- At 00:06, instead of playing Bb note, play B which is the major third of the chord sounding there (G major).
- At 00:22, that important bend plays a 2nd/9th of the chord sounding, I would switch it by a chord tone, don't you?
- The last phrase at 00:24 sounds weird for me... check the note choices there.
- Timing, it would be good to adjust timing a bit more on the whole solo.

Hi mate, it's awesome to hear how your solo has progressed from the first to the fourth recording. This new version is KILLER! We need just a little adjustment and it will be EPIC.

The note at 00:03 doesn't sound cool. Check out what's the connection with the chord, and go for a tastier choice.

Hi mate!! There are really cool ideas on these audios that with some little polishing would be killer! I like the fast stuff, there some powerful licks happening there. Everything is well played, but there is more room to adjust timing. It's the only problem there.

Then, you become more melodic and I feel that your solo needs more of it! The fast stuff is ok, but it should be used to connect your melodic stuff. It's you still have time to dedicate to this one, work on more melodic playing and less shredding. This will make your solo more memorable, and your shred passages flashier.

I think I played way too many notes!! ph34r.gif

Wou! You rocked it!! Are you on a more shred period? or it's just because of this collab?

Your fast playing sounds very smooth and I like how you balance alternate picking, legato and hybrid. You should do a tutorial based on combining these three techniques while shredding. smile.gif

Thanks! Currently I am working on songwriting again, so the little time I have for practicing guitar I spend on keeping my chops up. So in a way you could say I am focusing on chops/shred, guitar wise.

Combing those techniques is a really cool idea for a tutorial!

Interesting! Looking forward your new tunes!!

Really cool backing! I improvised over it a bit yesterday and came up with some great ideas, unfortunately I don't have time to tie the whole song together.... But looking forward to the final video!

Hi
Here is my collab, thank for this backing track. smile.gif
This is my new guitar and amazing Tokai ls 173. It's a les paul style with long tenon and nitro finish, it's sounds amazing in rock and blues context but it's hard to sherd with this tiny frets jejeje

hope you like!

Your guitar also sounds and looks great. what pick ups does it have?

I don't suppose you could make a GUITAR PRO file for the tapping arppegio bit near the start? smile.gif I'd love to try that lick

Thanks Kris, i'm super happy with the kemper, i use medium gain profiles... in this case is the Trainwreck 3- - 2015-02-15 20-21-23 with the compressor and boost on. This profile is in the first pack of Mbritt profiles.

Thanks Gab! they are the stock pickups, very low output pickups "Mk2 vintage" and they sound amazing like and old paf humbuker style.
Son las que venían con la guitarra, suenan geniales muy low outpout pero muy bonitas, me encantan!

Cool! I love the tone that you get with this guitar, combined with the pick ups and Kemper. I'd like to hear some more solo stuff from you with this set up.

Ok guys, it's time to start mixing this. Let me know if there is any other last time take coming!

hey friends! let's continue with this one here: http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=55039&view=findpost&p=719774

Run for your life
everybody has a mission
follow your heart
and reach to the sky

at GMC

Yeah - I think we should have more collabs with student vocals. It ads so much more personality to the tracks.
