Have You Felt Curiosity For Playing Other Styles?, Because we all have our favorite one

I remember that sometimes in the past I've said: "I want to learn how to play jazz" or flamenco, or some strange technique...

Some I had success with but others just didn't made it through. What do you think is what motivates us to play move on from our favorite style to play and start learning some completely new ones on the same instrument?

I actually like the feeling that I'm playing something that I'm not used to.

i actually like playing out of my original style because i think it would make my understanding of the guitar and music alot better. i can venture into different things like blues, shred, and maybe flamenco because my original style is rock or funk. i also think it gives me the motivation to try new things and expand my learning experience and make it enjoyable at the same time biggrin.gif

,,,,,,,,, just no time for dedication.

Pretty much sums it up. I've had to come to the realization that my time to dedicate to guitar is finite.....hell....I have to get up at 3am as it is just to get a couple of uninterrupted hours of practice. I've learned that I will be lucky if I can just learn to shred like I want to. At this point my only goal is to eventually have a CD's worth of material recorded before I die..... tongue.gif

Then you guys can download it for free...... laugh.gif laugh.gif OR....you could buy it and use it as a coaster.....either way is fine with me..... laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif

I believe it should come natural to every musician, I mean, there is good stuff in almost every genre and style,
it would be kind a shame not to at least try different ideas etc.
Some would do it more, some less but the idea is to investigate and see what you might find useful
to eventually mix with your own "favorite" style, if such a thing exist in a first place.
Playing Hard Rock or Metal is not just playing THAT, it has been made out of old school R'n'R,
then there was root Blues, things are pretty much mixed already. smile.gif

yeah, I really think it's a lack of time. Then again that means we tend to be perfectionists because we have to have hours to practice and get it right, it can't be just looked over for some minutes and gone.

That's true but some genres are really different. Take Yngwie for instance. He said on an interview that his style is based on violin playing more than guitar.

I don't even have the time to listen to every genre, let alone play...
Seriously, if I had the time, I would practice everything, every instrument available, but I'm busy enough as it is.
Guitar takes too much of my time already... (study became second place since I play guitar)

Please note that the only GMC lesson I started to learn was Muris' Fast Country Solo. Something like a 10-15 minutes "hole" between my students. I still remember the first licks but I will find the time to learn it completely biggrin.gif

I started my musical education with classical stuff and some jazz and rock and roll influeneces from my teacher back then (must be around not so late 90s) and then i started to listen to metal. So after i got my first electric guitar, that was the style i wanted to play. But the school bands played rock and pop, so i had some short trips to rock and pop land after which i came back to metal. Last year i played for a few weeks in a cover band, rock again. I think it was all helpfull to become a better musician (better, not good smile.gif ), and as mentioned again and again before, i would (realy) learn other styles if i had more time. So with the amount of time i can afford to spend on practising, i tend to stay metal smile.gif but is surely scheduled for the future, maybe after the diploma... smile.gif

I am interested in a lot of musical styles and would like to find more time for Martin Taylor type solo performances. I would also like to have some flamengo technique under my belt as it is very refreshing to play for audience (unexpected most likely). I play classical pieces but it is not as interesting and dynamical as flamengo which requires couple of different approaches. So from me, more solo guitar works and flamengo in future, outside of things I am working on (be bop, post bop and modern jazz).
