Hey Everyone

Going to start a new thread, where I will spell out, tap out or notate a mode and then you can analyze it and tell us all what you think it it.

Here is today's mode:

D E F# G# A B C D

Can you tell us:

1. The name of this mode
2. What parent scale it comes from
3. What chord you would solo over using this mode
4. How this mode would be spelled if you started on the note A

Good Luck!

Ah, but are you sure you would'nt prefer to use the D Lydian Dominant over a Bbm(add11)/G for the most hilarious effect? biggrin.gif

And I would use it on measures 3 and 4 of 'Take the A-Train'.

Yeah, works great there for sure. And check out the tune Blue Seven, used for the melody line and all 3 7th chords in a blues, great sound!

Here's today's mode for you to check out!

G Ab B C D Eb F G

Can you tell me:

1. What the name of this mode is
2. What the parent scale is
3. What chord you could use this over in a solo
4. The "characteristic" (Standout) note of this mode
5. What the spelling of this mode would be starting on the note Db.

Good luck!

Parent scale - C harm. min.
I usually refer to it as phrygian natural 3 or phryg/dom.
I like it over a G7#5(b9) especially if resolving to a minor i chord (Cm), though I think it really rocks over any G7alt/dom groove.
Ab is def the 'character' tone.
And now the hard part ... Db Ebb F Gb Ab Bbb Cb (you had to pick Db blink.gif biggrin.gif )

*In Klezmer music this is the 'Freygish' scale (comes from phrygian) and even has a cool compound key signature.
I could only find an example in D:

Nice one! The only thing I would watch, and it's a small, nitpicky thing. Is calling the chord #5b9. Only because this scale has a natural 5 in is, and the b13, so I would go with b9,b13 instead.

It's a small issue, but it could cause confusion if you wrote it out on a chart, if I saw #5b9 I would think altered, but if I saw b9,b13 I would think 5th mode HM to solo over it.

This tends to generate a lot of heated debate among guitarists and arrangers, but I just think that since the mode has a natural 5, then the chord symbol should reflect that.

No, you're right.
That's a mistake I make all the time and I have a piano player friend who busts me all the time on it.
b13 implies natural 5 which in this case helps to define the sound.

*That's a real Berklee thing - take away any ambiguity with the chord/scale relationship.

Yeah, small mistake but could lead to some awkward moments in a jam. One of my pet peeves that's all smile.gif
