Here is today's mode: D E F# G# A B C D Can you tell us: 1. The name of this mode 2. What parent scale it comes from 3. What chord you would solo over using this mode 4. I like it over a G7#5(b9) especially if resolving to a minor i chord (Cm), though I think it really rocks over any G7alt/dom groove. Ab is def the 'character' tone. And now the hard part ... Db Ebb F Gb Ab Bbb Cb (you had to pick Db ) In Klezmer music this is the 'Freygish' scale (comes from phrygian) and even has a cool compound key signature. Only because this scale has a natural 5 in is, and the b13, so I would go with b9,b13 instead. It's a small issue, but it could cause confusion if you wrote it out on a chart, if I saw #5b9 I would think altered, but if I saw b9,b13 I would think 5th mode HM to solo over it. This tends to generate a lot of heated debate among guitarists and arrangers, but I just think that since the mode has a natural 5, then the chord symbol should reflect that. That's a mistake I make all the time and I have a piano player friend who busts me all the time on it. b13 implies natural 5 which in this case helps to define the sound.
