GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ Cheap Soundcard

Posted by: ElHombre Aug 4 2014, 09:11 AM

Hello

I got one of these Shure 58 microphones now and its time to start recording smile.gif
I saw that you could use a Pod X3 to record vocals with, but I dont have it at home right now.

So I need an external sound card I guess.
I have an internal soundcard in my computer as well, but I guess it wont work?
Even with an adapter.

So a cheap option wether its a device like M-audio/external soundcard
or another way smile.gif

Cheers

To record a mic, you'd need a sound card with a preamp (mic input).

Here are some of the budget options that should give you very good results :

Focusrite SCARLETT 2i2
Steinberg UR 22 (this one is interesting but some report issues with using guitar and software modeling and getting distortion)
Presonus AudioBox USB
M-Audio MTRACK

Going for the most budget friendly, there is a device like : Behringer UM2 ...and others.
I have no idea how will it works (or doesn't) but Behringer usually makes gear that is inspired by some other famous gear and some of it works really well.

Hi mate! You've received all the best options possible. All the options suggested by Bogdan are great ones and the price is around US$100. I've also tried the one that Cosmin posted and it's good. So check them in your store and go for one of them!

Well, in a pinch you can get a converter to convert your XLR jack on your SM57 cable to the 1/8th input on your internal sound card. They are less than 10 bux typically.

XLR Male to 1/8th inch Mono Male

would the exact name of the adapter smile.gif

If you want to record your guitar, you need a

1/4 inch Mono Female to 1/8 Mono Male

Even if you get a second interface/soundcard, having these around is a good idea smile.gif They are cheap and work in a pinch.

I've just bought the Scarlett 2i2 which Bogdan recommended on his list, and from my short experience it's a very nice card!
