Well today it was pointed out in one of my Rec posts, that my audio quality isn't very good, which isn't a surprise considering I was recording with the microphone from a cheap headset. The time has come I've decided, to buy myself a decent microphone. Now I hardly know anything about microphones, so I have a few queries about microphones. First, what is the difference between a dynamic and a condensor mic. Second, what sort of price should I look at to get something decent. Third, is a mic something that there's no reason not to buy used off ebay, or is there a good reason to get a new one. As far as I can see atm, I'm only going to be recording acoustic guitars and vocals, although I'd like a good all round mic as I don't know what I might want to use it for in the future. I want to keep this as cheap as possible, although I am prepared to go up to £60, maybe £70, if it means getting something decent that will sound very good and last me a while. If anyone knows a mic that matches these specifications then I'd be very interested to hear about it. Matt What basically is the difference between dynamic and condenser mic is that dynamic one has limited pickup range, and condenser mic picks up sound within a whole room. Also condenser mic needs power to operate, referred as "phantom power". This can be battery, via audio device, or USB. Condenser is better suited for vocals and acoustic instruments, and dynamic is better for primary amp cab mic or on stage mic. When choosing the mic it is best to first see if you have phantom power. -------------------- - Ivan's Video Chat Lesson Notes HERE

Thanks for your help guys. I was really hoping I wouldn't have to go above £100, but do you think I need to to get something good?

You can get something like Rode NT1, it's a great condenser mic for starting up!

Well if you can go above 100quid go for it! Nothing wrong of having more quality mic. I think NT1 could finish the job in the end of the day, but I wouldn't suggest not getting nothing better of course. Just don't go for a much pricier model and you'll be OK of course.
