So I got a new computer.

Intel quad core

4GB ram

Vista 64.

I'm just having too many Vista issues/incompatabilities and I'm considering going back to XP Pro.

I imagine I'll see a performance increase even though I'm going back to a 32bit OS.

Thoughts? 32bit XP Pro vs 64bit Vista with this hardware.

I think all people using Vista are beta testers of a crappy OS.

I got a new computer 6 months ago and my first action was, search all driver for XP and then install XP. I think that was the smartest movement I did.

I don't mind about 64 bits or 32, it's just XP or Vista, so, my opinion is XP.

BTW there is a XP 64 aswell, so if you want to use your 64bit processor you don't need to use Vista if you don't want.

I dont know that 64bit XP is the way to go either. It'd be like a half step back to good.

I guess my biggest question is how much of the quad core processor is wasted in XP 32?

And how much of the ram is wasted there as well?

I heard 3 gbs of ram is wasted on 32 bit XP - max!

I am getting new computer with same specs as yours so I was asking around a week ago about everything.

Its better to stick with XP in my opinion wink.gif

Same issues here. I have a quad core machine with 3gb of ram and 32 bit Vista. The most trouble I'm having is with IE. It crashes a lot! I seem to have found the issue but not the solution laugh.gif

Seems McAfee and Vista don't like each other much. McApbho.dll is said to be the culprit, which is part of the anti-spam. I've shut it off but doesn't help. I'm thinking about removing it all together..

its a variety of stuff. Little vista quirks here and there. I have all updates nd all new 64bit drivers.

Sound is one issue. I have an EMU 1212m card with Vista drivers and it gets all kinds of static whenever there is network traffic. UNACCEPTABLE. MS knows about this too. Its a documented vista issue.

Lack of support for lots of apps too.

Another prpblem too Jer is that 4gig of ram is not enough if your moving to 64 bit O/s. Its esentially like having 1 gig in an XP machine.

I went back to Xp abount a month ago. Ya know...everything just works in XP.

Well if you can't run favorite software and/or hardware you use , on Vista 64bit I would recommend going back to XP...You will definitely see the improvement in performance any way...

The machine came with 4GB of ram and Vista 64.

It seems to run fine as far as overall speed.

But yeah, screw it. XP here I come.

What's the advantage of 64 bit vista?

My girlfriend is going to give me a new laptop with vista 32bit and 2 GB of ram this Christmas. I'm not fond of vista but being a laptop designed for vista I guess I'll use it. Anyway it will be a huge improvement over my XP with 512 Ram current laptop laugh.gif

You can run Vista but it is not recommended if you are used to XP and it's apps. I think Vista is worth the try but be prepared for some minor sacrifices with software and drivers. Some things just won't work.
If you go with Vista i advise you really take some time to investigate if every software and driver you use will work with it. If you see that there is a number of drivers&software that is unsupported - forget it and stick to XP for now, at least till the end of 2009 when XP will really be old OS.

Good choice. I have been playing with Vista for a while and have to start to roll it out soon where I work for some customers of mine.

Its ok. I think its fine for the average user. Surfing the net, writing a resume, or playing a game but getting into some stuff that we do here. Recording, Mixing, playing with different tyoe audio drivers(WDM,ASIO) I have to conclude that Vista is just not stable in those areas yet. I wonder for the hardcore video producer what he thinks.

Im sticking to XP for now. But...remember XP ran like garbage at first. It only runs great now 3 service packs and 30+ updates later.

The biggest problem for me is sound.

If I have music playing and browse the web I get static.

I'm getting audio dropouts in Sonar I never got before....

Sounds weird.. I've run Vista 64bit for a year now and I haven't had any problems really..

You sure you've updated everything, OS, drivers for your hardware, your software? I know there was a lot of compatibility issues back when it was released. There still is some I guess, but that's due to 64bit and not Vista..
