GMC Forum _ GEAR & PRODUCTION _ Looking For A Perfect Pick

Posted by: iamblackmo Apr 7 2009, 01:29 AM

I have been using the Dunlop Jazz III stiff picks (the black ones) since I pick up the guitar again about 8 months ago. I never used to use them, but I dug a couple of their characteristics.

This was a switch for me because I use to use the slightly larger and flimsier nylon Dunlop picks.

I decided to pick up a 1.2 mm (or so) Tortex pick, and I really liked the feel of it. The flatness of the pick intrigued me and it seemed to easier to play certain licks I had trouble playing with the Jazz III.

So, I am looking for suggestions on a pick that can come close to meeting the following ideals:

In respect to the thickness, I want to have a thin, yet stiff, feel.
I feel that the Jazz III is too small but the Tortex is too big from point to head. The Jazz III look to answer to this question but I would think that they would be thicker than I am looking for.

Sorry for rambling.

Thin and Flat. Smaller than a tortex larger that a Jazz III. Stiff feel and a hybrid of the extremely pointy Jazz III tip and the rounded, less defined Tortex.

Thank you.

Same, they don't go sideways when chugging. I have 2 with metal tips that sound deadly.

Ive been using the same pick for months.. the metal tip just needs to be filed down even sometimes.. I love the way it fits perfectly between your thumb and finger

Do they all have the beautiful, thin and invaginated shape? I see the metal tip one on Amazon and it is the only one with a shot of it's profile.

Are the a bit larger than the jazz III, which ones do you recommend aside from the one that involves metal-on-metal contact with the strings. I don't know about the metal tip. :-)

All these "control tip" picks look interesting. I am not sure the difference in the Derelin (purple), Celluloid Rock (yellow) picks are.

The jazz tip seems like it would instantly feel familiar to me because of the pointy tip and the shape. Once again, it is a bit pointy.

Anyone know of a place that is selling a variety package of one of each?

Would it be a good idea to buy this and try them each out?

try these sometime outlaw. I tried the dava from your rec. It is fine, for my taste, but....

http://elderly.com/accessories/items/PKPC-1.50.htm

the phat line. the 1.3 is ok, but you would want the 1.5.

They also have a thin variety of this. Don't care for it, the nylon is softer on those, and they are too thin. The nylon on the phat line is harder than most picks. These are the only picks I really care for.

If you are in the US, Guitar Center carries them, been wanting to try them myself and I also use the Jazz III.

I tried them all. They are ok. Better than most picks in my view. But you should have bet me on North Carolina, this year, I would have bet my whole 20 Dava pick collection. Well all but a couple, just in case I change my mind on them, which probably won't happen.

I do like to have a metal one, just for kicks. Sort of like having a V pick to me, just to use once in awhile for kicks.

Been thinking about you this March Frank and started to issue a challenge.. I was a bit worried about UConn. I think they would have made it more interesting. State still has a pulse, we'll see. Care to send me one of those Dava's, maybe I could get a Lawson autograph for you... laugh.gif Kidding of course. smile.gif Off to watch the rest of the game..

Have you tried the http://www.v-picks.com/?
They are thicker than JazzIIIs but very comfortable I think.
I switched to them and that's all I've been playing for the last few months...
I use the small pointed ones.

Agree, UConn would have made it a game, or Louisville. But you know how it is, one bad game and you go down, and it is hard to have 6 good games in a row.

I figured you should have taken this year, as you returned everybody, and North Carolina has shown that in March. But now you will lose most everybody to graduation or pros as we did last year. But with our programs, rebuilding means we make it to the sweet 16, final 4 the next year.

If you want a full selection of Dava picks to try out, I will send them to you. Well I have the rock pointed, rock rounded, metal, and original, I got several of each. Email me at [email protected] if you want them, with your address. I can also send you a V pick rounded if you don't have one, and want to try that out, you might like that, I have 2 rounded medium V picks, and rarely use them, use my V pick diamond when I want a V pick.

Maybe the Dunlop Jazz H3 are something for you. They are basically Jazz III Picks out of that tortex material. They wear down more quickly than the Jazz III though.

But hey, picks are cheap, just go to a guitar store and grab one of every kind that might suit you wink.gif

Thanks for the offer Frank. May just take you up on that V-Pick offer. And yes, your right about North Carolina. We will definitely be rebuilding next year. It was quite a night in Chapel Hill. I'm about a hundred miles away and could here the partying this morning when I got up for work. laugh.gif

I really like the http://www.staggmusic.com/products/products_detail.php?langue=uk&oneid=1018 picks, and I think they fit your description, although they are about the same size as a torrtex.

I know what you are talking about, it was like that last year here, but I just had to walk down the block, I live right off campus. I think that is 5 NCAA titles for you now. We just have 3. North Carolina will be fine next year, North Carolina went to regional about 20 years in a row or so under Dean Smith, I bet they get to regional again.

This year was a success for us I feel, Self got AP coach of the year for his success with the rebuilding, and Missouri did not make it to Final 4. We hate Missouri as much as North Carolina hates Duke, if you can imagine that. I think actually we hate them more, they burned Lawrence to the ground, and murdered about 200 citizens in the Civil War, Duke never did that to the Tarheels.

Actually I like their coach a lot, he is a class guy just wish he would have left to go to another school. But I was overjoyed when UConn knocked them out, so I can keep reminding Missouri fan....

Final 4 count:

Kansas 14
George Mason 1
Missouri 0

I've been playing with dunlop 2mm picks for 4 years, until now.
I just changed to Jazz IIIs and I love them.

The fact that they are so small makes you really perfect your movement.
With a bigger pick, it's easier to be sloppy becaue you'll hit the string even if your movement is far from perfect.

You could use the Tortex pic and a rasp to get it to the size you want it to be. But you should know how to use a rasp in a proper way, otherwise u´ll get uneven sides of the pic!

Have you checked out the Paul Gilbert signature pick. It seems to meet all your specs smile.gif

Thin, Stiff, Pointy, Larger than Jazz III, Small than Tortex
