GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ You Ever Have One Of Those Days When You Just Can't Play For Crap?

Posted by: Praetorian Jul 19 2008, 02:18 AM

I had one tonight. Lessons I have been playing for months, I was struggling with. No real reason...I just couldn't play tonight! And to REALLY top off the night, I asked my wife to get a chromatic tuner out of my brand new strat hardshell case (which had the strat in it) while I was playing my Ibanez...when I later picked up the strat case...I realized she closed the case cover, but never relatched it! So, my new strat tumbled onto the living room floor from about a foot in the air. We have carpeting on the floor though so it's fine. I got lucky there!

Yeah, youre not alone there... sometimes it seems like my fingers dont want to work, I just work through it..
I find that when that happens I just need more warmup time, then im fine... Ill go through warmup exercises til they want to work.. wink.gif

yes, i think we all have those moment... at the beginning of summer holidays, i just couldn't play the things i used to play before dry.gif (maybe because i was not used to my new ibanez)

but, there are some day when we play way better then usually, like last tuesday, in my case. this day, i finally nailed the long speedpicking run in the shreddy rock trip, something i started practising in february laugh.gif

Was just about to post a topic about the same yesterday. smile.gif So yeah, you're not alone.

Yea, it sucks, I just try to sync up my hands, and warm them up till they work, but sometimes I just have to suck for a while. laugh.gif

Posted by: stickyfingers Jul 19 2008, 08:22 AM

yeah, i had the same feeling yesterday. ape meets guitar. i simply went to sleep.

Posted by: kodiak Jul 19 2008, 08:36 AM

Yeah, every once in awhile it's almost like one of my hands is a second behind the other.
Then sometimes my left hand just doesn't want to work. It's as if it sits there and laughs at me, saying - "Ahahahah you suck!"
I make an effort to move it and it just twitches, like it's taunting me lol.

Yeah, definitely, though not very often.
I think getting at least 7 hours of sleep helps. wink.gif

These things happen, sometimes it is perhaps meant to be. smile.gif Don't worry, after a few days, things should get in balance, and you will feel a lot better.

Yes i do get these days, and yes I get quite hard on myself, but I shouldnt............

I see threads on "how much do you practice" all over the net, claims that people are practicing everyday for like 12 hours a day...... YEAH RIGHT rolleyes.gif laugh.gif

In real life, real people need a break here and there to let the brain process what you have been practicing. This week I had to take about a 4 day break as im finishing of my coursework.

I worried about my skills going downhill, and wasting my hard work, did they? NOPE!! I had the best practice session when I picked it back up.

Some days your are more in the frame of mind to practice well than others!! wink.gif

This happens to everyone I suppose!! I noticed a phenomena that sometimes my guitar and everything I play sounds really bad..I mean the sole sound of it ! Its just isn't pleasing to my ears to hear it, and I supposed to be playing it normally...When those days come I just stay off the guitars for awhile..

What helps me alot is listening to music I love. Makes me urge to play!

I have it all the time. dry.gif
Then I just play less.
Or practice non-melodic exercises.

But it goes away all the time too, which is why I still play the guitar! laugh.gif

If you go to the Lick of the Day and then read the Tip of the Day, you have the answer for this thread wink.gif

I wasw so excited about getting to play today, just now, after having been at Odense Stadium watching football. Then I came home, and there was this huge spider on my computer keyboard. I tried to kill it by smashing it, but god was it fast and it escaped me. I've never seen a thing so fast in my life - not a spider at least. It ran and hid it self and now I can't find the damn spider anymore to kill it. And I'm terrified of it! Hahaha... so now I'm not in the mood for playing the guitar anymore.

Haha, we have our working room in the attic here, so I've seen a few spiders coming and going while working with the computer. I don't have the heart to kill them though, instead I just throw them out of the window tongue.gif

When it comes to spiders and other "creeps" like it, I don't wanna be near it or touch it! I just want it dead! tongue.gif

And today it´s my turn. wacko.gif My finger simply don´ want to move correctly. I can´t get over 80 bpm or so. (except from the solo in "For the Love of God" which is a lot legato ^^) And tomorrow I can´t play my lovely JEM because I´m sending it away to Cologne. It has to be repared (bridge adjustment and other stuff).
I hope it will pass soon. sad.gif

Yeah, I have those days every now and then..
And it's usually those days I have time to practice or record something sad.gif laugh.gif

But it passes, so it's all good in the end smile.gif

Learn to set it up yourself.
It's fun to do, and you don't have to send your *precious* away.

I´ve already tried to do it several times and I managed to get the bridge in the normal position. However, my *precious* detunes all the time when I use the whammy bar. And the whole where it goes in is a bit damaged (my little brother played with the whammy bar -.-). I hope it will be back this week. smile.gif

Another day, another power. I hope today I will play better than yesterday. wink.gif

Cheers

First you set action, then you set bridge paralell to body, then you balance springs so that high and low E are correct even though you start tune on either side - and last you do intonation.

That will give a good result smile.gif
