Finding an inspiration source such as Mr. Gilbert can be something really awesome smile.gif but pay attention, there's always a downside. I remember myself when I was 19-20 years old - I almost became Steve Vai's lookalike laugh.gif I was so utterly obsessed by this person that inside I think unconsciously, I wanted to be him smile.gif that's the bad part. Learn, understand, assimilate but do not copy and moreover, do not chocke your own self just to become somebody else.

Having this in mind, try to get the best out of Paul's good stuff! biggrin.gif

I think you have it very clear in your head what you want. And that's important. Now you only have to stick to it. I think starting with the riffs then licks then solos is a good idea.

Maybe in the process learn solos from AC DC IF that motivates you. I personally learned all Metallica, some Megadeth, Pantera, Sepultura. Then moved on to Marty Friedman, Vai, Satriani, etc.
