GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ building speed

gday mates,

hey i just got a question for whoever wants to answer........... im just wondering about the idea behind the metronome........ i just watched the metronome clip and im assuming u start off with a lick or something like this for example....eg: 12---14 on A to 12----14 on D at say 16th notes .....at a low bpm say like 60bpm and u just keep increasing the tempo until u cant keep up with it and thats the indication of where u are at in regards to speed.....once u are comforatble with that u then increase the tempo in small increments as u get better.....and u wake up one morning (which is after a lot of practice and hard work i might add) and u find u have gone from 80bpm at say 16th notes to 120 at 16th notes.....and then u apply that speed u have acquired to all your licks and solos...is this correct or am i misunderstanding the whole concept of it?

any answer would be much appreciated from anyone,

Hey Slash85 ytou have got it pretty correct! (All though you will probably not wake and go fron 90 to 120 bpm).

What you are describing is one aspect of the metronome practcing. Another aspect is the fact that when starting out - you don't have any timing (nobody has). And if you intend to make progress at "crash course" speed - the metronome is the only warranty for you to develop timing as well as technique, licks etc.

Finally, I'd like to say that if I had the choice beetween knowing een of the following: speed, harmonies (scales), or timing. I'd definately choose timing.

Somone who has excellent timing and "rhythmic thinking" can just stay in the first pentatonic box - and still keep coming up with new great stuff. So...

metronome=timing=what matters
