rolleyes.gif Hey all, here is my setup. Toneport UX1 and Reaper recording software.

Heres my questions: how do I add drums? how do i add base? What I mean is what programs should I use, and can i do it through reaper? the cheaper the software / freeware, the better :-)

Last minor question: Do you add the drums or base before you record guitar, or after you record guitar?

Again, I appreciate all the help so far from you guys. whenever you get the chance, I would greatly appreciate suggestions. Thanks!

What's up count, I can get you going with a beat but that's about as far as I can take you man. My set-up is about the same as yours. I just recently downloaded the demo version of Addicted Drums (which is very limited) you can download it HERE. You will need to save the file in the VST folder of Reaper. Once you have the download, open up Reaper and insert a track. Then, click the FX button of that track and select AD. Once AD opens, you can drag and drop the drum line you want. You can extend the time, cut, paste or copy parts but that is about it. From what I hear, EZ Drummer is much better, (the purchased version of course).

I personally try and find a beat that I like and go from there but surely there is a better way to write your own music. Col has started a topic HERE and this is just the lesson I would like to see.

Hope this helped man and if any questions, feel free to pm me. smile.gif

The best way to figure out the whole song before you start recording and adding midi. And yeah, you should add drums first, bass is not that important when it comes to what needs to be done first, but drums are,so you would not go out of beat.

You must get drum and bass VSTs.

Drum sets that are good:

- EZDrummer (cool grooves, couple of kits, pop rock, metal, vintage, coctail etc)
- Addictive Drums (cool grooves, lots of options, but not that great sound as in EZDrummer, although it is a matter of taste generally, both are good, you want make mistakes if you choose one only)

Bass VST that are good:

- Steinberg Virtual Bassist (comes bundled with grooves, and bass effects, and you can also play it note at a time, little difficult to use at start must read the manual, can be use without MIDI keyboard easily)
- Spectrasonic Trology (high quality bass VST with lot of natural sounding basses, from acoustic to picked electric, lots of presets, does not require tweaking, easy to use, but if you wanna work with it effectively you need a MIDI keyboard).

I personally play first the guitar along with the click in the DAW and then add drums. I find this approach better because I make drums along with the guitar and not vise versa. It is sometimes good to lay down drums first for example when you are building a groove and you can jam along until something cool comes out. Then you cut that part and build around it etc..
