GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ Intervals

Posted by: shellshock1911 Nov 16 2007, 11:43 AM

Hi, I got a theory book few days ago to read on the the 1.5 hour bus ride everyday. At the end of each section is a quiz. I read the section on intervals which I am already pretty familiar with but I don't want to skip anything. I then was taking the quiz and recognized all the intervals on the staff except a few. The first one I couldn't understand was 5th (it kinda looks like this, pretend this is a music staff, O=whole note.)

---------------
---------------
----------------
----------------
--bO----------
------
---O--

But wouldn't that be a dimished fifth?? It is A and Eb, but on the answer key it just says 5th. Is it or a mistake, or I am not understanding and mistaking something.

Don't 5th intervals look like this?

--------------
--------------
--------------
--------------
--O----------
------
--O--

The next interval I'm just not getting is

-----------------
-----------------
-----------------
-----------------
-----------------
--#O---
----O---

It says that this a major third, but wouldnt that be augmented third?

And wouldn't this be major third?

------------------
-----------------
-----------------
-------------------
------------------
--O----
--O----

Hard to say from diagrams/tabs you provided,
looks like 7 strings tab,no fret signs,note naming ... smile.gif

Edit: missed A and Eb part,it's b5 wink.gif

I think its meant to be music notation Muris ....

In that case, the first is E and Bb, making it a diminished 5th yes (the devils interval!) - the only possibility is that the key signature is one that contains an Eb which would flatten the E and make it a perfect 5th.

In the second case, all is correct. The notes would be E and G# which is a major 3rd.
