I think most people are already aware of this. The movie is called Crossroads (the 80's flick, not the Britney Spears one), and it's about a young classical prodigy turned blues player named "Lightning Boy" Martone (played by Ralph Macchio - the karate kid) going on an adventure with a harmonica player named Willie Brown. There’s a lot of ties into the famous blues guitarist / singer Robert Johnson, and the myth about him selling his soul to the devil for guitar abilities. The clip you posted is the ending duel scene between Eugene Martone and Vai’s character named Jack Butler, although obviously Vai is the one responsible for all the guitar parts. The song Eugene wins with is called “Eugene's Trick Bag” and is available on Vai’s The Elusive Light And Sound Vol. 1 album. It’s based on Niccolò Paganini’s 5th caprice I think.

somehow the karate kid beating vai in a guitar duel sounds strangely unnerving, even if it isn't real.....

Funny Movie. although sometimes its obvious Vai pre-recorded all the solos.
