I think 1 hour a day is not enough to become good. 4 hours at least, in my opinion...
By the way this is a cool topic to discuss one little thing: How many of you GMC-ers actually learn the lesson 100%?? - i mean if you take Alternate Picking Lesson 1 for example - do you actually learn it to play it like the instructor in the video or you just go through tabs and leave it alone? It's very important to get lessons down, learn them completely and be able to play it like the instructor! Be honest with yourself - noone can control you here except yourself! So be patient and practice each lesson to get it down 100%! As for motivation - it's all up to you and what you want to achieve with playing! And again - noone can keep you motivated if YOU don't want it. The intro video of GMC where Kris is talking about hard practice and playing some cool stuff looks very "motivating" at first look. But as soon as people realise they will ACTUALLY have to practice hard they give up! Respect the guitar and practice routine every day and you'll realise how cool is it to actually be able to play some difficult kick-ass stuff once you get it down! -------------------- "It isn't how many years you have been playing, it's how many hours." -- Prashant Aswani "PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!" -- Michael Angelo Batio Check out my video lessons and instructor board! |

Well i can say i sure practice 4 hours a day. I am a student at university but i totally don't care about it. My parents know it - they know i want to be professional guitarist and pursue music career. That doesn't mean i suck there. I give all my exams and i also recieved Republic Schoolarship for good grades - it's around 100$ each month. BUT - i don't go out with friends - i don't have time, i never get drunk as many people do, i don't waste my time on girl-friends. I do play multiplayer games but i play them maybe 1/1.5 hour a day.
If you are a grown man and you have full time job and family, wife and kids than i understand why can't you practice that long but if you are a student than you have no excuses -------------------- "It isn't how many years you have been playing, it's how many hours." -- Prashant Aswani "PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!" -- Michael Angelo Batio Check out my video lessons and instructor board! |

I am studying Informatics. No major subject for now. It's like 3 years of general informatics and then 2 years of speciality - like Programming or Graphic design.
Teaching is not easy at all. I sometimes record and write explanations for 5 hours because it simply is not good. So you can't see all the hard work behind the final product. But anyway - hope my music career will work out somehow! -------------------- "It isn't how many years you have been playing, it's how many hours." -- Prashant Aswani "PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!" -- Michael Angelo Batio Check out my video lessons and instructor board! |

I practice about 2-3 hours a day. I just do a lot of it without an amp. So if I'm relaxing after work on the couch with my wife I'm probably doing finger exercises; with my guitar, not my wife.
I don't necessarily agree with people that think you need to practice 4 hours a day. It might be necessary for the people who want to be super cranked shredders, but for the more rock and blues driven guitarists you don't have to spend nearly as much time trying to get your sextuplets up to 4000 bpm. I'm a night owl, so I usually practice from 10pm-1am. That, of course, is after the kids go to bed... I will say that if you struggle to being dedicated to practice that you should save your money and try something else. I don't play the guitar to make a career out of it (although it worked out that way in my younger days), I play it because I enjoy it. It's certainly OK for it to just be a simple hobby. I have a small graphic design company, so if you end up any good, give me a call. I can only afford to pay you in beer, guitar picks, and bologna sandwiches. |
