today i realise that it is so easy to talk about goals, schedule n motivation, but when it comes to doing it,how many can really follow with what they set out to do....i know the importances of practice,we can definitely be the best with practice, but we have to keep the motivation going..today my friend ask me,do u know exactly what is motivation? i was stunned by the question n said when i have the burning desire to do something, my fren then tell me that motivation is when u come home after a whole day of tired sch or work n u still pick up your guitar n practice, that is motivation....if someone can commit 1 hr a day to practice i am very sure he will succeed one day...so today as i told myself that i want to sort myself out,i want to be highly motivated n live my life to the fullest...

1 hour a day? That seems too little for me biggrin.gif

But then again, great explaining. Sometimes.. Well, almost all the time I dont feel motivated. But I still pick up my guitar and play because theres nothing else to do for me biggrin.gif Still would be fun if I had the motivation. Dont know where you can get it though. Its not like you come to Walmart and say: "Hey, where do you keep the motivations" "Isle 9"
"Thanks Miss. Oh, just what I need - Guitar Motivation. And only 9.95"

Of course it's easy to talk about setting goals. But talk is just that..TALK. I think alot of people in life are "talk junkies". They talk about losing weight, being more active, practicing guitar more, being a better person, etc, etc. These people like the "warm fuzzies" they get in their stomach when they TALK about doing stuff. But when it comes down to it, those who succeed are those we DO rather than talk.

It all comes down to how bad do you want it? Remember, actions speak louder than words.

I think 1 hour a day is not enough to become good. 4 hours at least, in my opinion...

By the way this is a cool topic to discuss one little thing:
How many of you GMC-ers actually learn the lesson 100%?? - i mean if you take Alternate Picking Lesson 1 for example - do you actually learn it to play it like the instructor in the video or you just go through tabs and leave it alone?

It's very important to get lessons down, learn them completely and be able to play it like the instructor! Be honest with yourself - noone can control you here except yourself! So be patient and practice each lesson to get it down 100%!

As for motivation - it's all up to you and what you want to achieve with playing! And again - noone can keep you motivated if YOU don't want it. The intro video of GMC where Kris is talking about hard practice and playing some cool stuff looks very "motivating" at first look. But as soon as people realise they will ACTUALLY have to practice hard they give up!

Respect the guitar and practice routine every day and you'll realise how cool is it to actually be able to play some difficult kick-ass stuff once you get it down!

laugh.gif I was just typing the same thing. I consistently see people talking about how they practice 4-10 hours a day, and I have to ask....doesn't anyone have a job? Or go to school? Or have friends or a family, or know other people? Unless you are making a living with your playing (shows, teaching, etc...) I don't understand how everyone is pulling this off.

Well i can say i sure practice 4 hours a day. I am a student at university but i totally don't care about it. My parents know it - they know i want to be professional guitarist and pursue music career. That doesn't mean i suck there. I give all my exams and i also recieved Republic Schoolarship for good grades - it's around 100$ each month. BUT - i don't go out with friends - i don't have time, i never get drunk as many people do, i don't waste my time on girl-friends. I do play multiplayer games but i play them maybe 1/1.5 hour a day.

If you are a grown man and you have full time job and family, wife and kids than i understand why can't you practice that long but if you are a student than you have no excuses smile.gif

Cool. I guess it just comes down to what you are willing to do to get as good as you want to be.
And for the record - I am a grown man with a full time job at a financial firm....which is why I am getting weird looks for sitting at my desk typing on a guitar forum and listening to Children of Bodom. laugh.gif biggrin.gif

I heard an interview with Eddie Van Halen where he said something similar, stuck to practice over social life in his formative years. Hendrix used to practice all the time. What do you study, what is your major? I taught at the University for a year (Discrete Mathematics). Really enjoyed that, however trying to be a decent teacher is not easy. That is the basis for my appreciation of the high quality of instruction on this site. People who have taught will understand how much work it takes to provide instruction, to relate to the students, to anticipate what might confuse them, to express it in ways that will make sense to them. Not easy at all.

I am studying Informatics. No major subject for now. It's like 3 years of general informatics and then 2 years of speciality - like Programming or Graphic design.

Teaching is not easy at all. I sometimes record and write explanations for 5 hours because it simply is not good. So you can't see all the hard work behind the final product.

But anyway - hope my music career will work out somehow!

Would not surprise me if it did, not at all.

Informatics, good discipline. If I ever get off my ***, I am going to complete this piece of application program software and take it back to the Government and see if they are interested in it. It was a NASA project I was involved in, but lost funding. It watches over operations, keeps track of performance, and takes responses when Warning and Alarm conditions occur. You know all those guys that sit in those rooms watching monitors at the space center? It was designed to let them go home, maybe permanently. I figure I need to just put it together, get it working like I like it, and take it back to them, and see how it goes. Even if nobody is interested, well anything that you do that makes yourself smarter is bound to pay off in some fashion.

I used to play guitar as a kid, just picked it up again recently. Just enjoy it. When I do anything, I like to do it well. Which is why I am working though the stuff on this site.

I practice about 2-3 hours a day. I just do a lot of it without an amp. So if I'm relaxing after work on the couch with my wife I'm probably doing finger exercises; with my guitar, not my wife.

I don't necessarily agree with people that think you need to practice 4 hours a day. It might be necessary for the people who want to be super cranked shredders, but for the more rock and blues driven guitarists you don't have to spend nearly as much time trying to get your sextuplets up to 4000 bpm.

I'm a night owl, so I usually practice from 10pm-1am. That, of course, is after the kids go to bed...

I will say that if you struggle to being dedicated to practice that you should save your money and try something else. I don't play the guitar to make a career out of it (although it worked out that way in my younger days), I play it because I enjoy it.

It's certainly OK for it to just be a simple hobby.

I have a small graphic design company, so if you end up any good, give me a call. I can only afford to pay you in beer, guitar picks, and bologna sandwiches.

i think all yr opinions are valuable,n i especially agree with pavel on that there is no excuse that a student should not have any excuse not to practice for 4 hrs a days...i am going to uni soon n therefore i tell myself that i should not have any excuse not to practice for 4hrs a day n i think that it is really important we master a lesson,i am like what pavel said,i jump here n there,i think should be more focus, n i definitely agree that action is louder than words...GMC's lets all improve n rock on together!!
