GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ A Written Practice Schedule?

Posted by: purple hayes Mar 29 2009, 06:21 PM

I'm sure this has been covered before, but my searches were fruitless. If anyone can point me to a previous thread, I'd appreciate it.

What I'm looking for is some sort of rough practice schedule for someone that has maybe 2-3 hrs. per day to practice.

I think the first thing you need to define is exactly what it is you are trying to accomplish. Technique? Composition? Riffing? Everything? laugh.gif tongue.gif I'd figure out what you are wanting to accomplish first and then I'd come up with plan. smile.gif

Possibly it can help you to develop your own routine. Let me know if you need any specific guidelines.

IMHO written scheduals ruin the fun of music.

But they can be very helpful if you are trying to maximize the quality of your practice time and help you accomplish some specific goals. Just depends on what you are trying to accomplish...they aren't for everybody no doubt. smile.gif

So this morning, I came up with my own temporary practice schedule and used a timer; it was as follows:

20 min: Legato
10 min: sweeping
30 min: Alternate picking
10 min: theory
20 min: chord stuff

So that was 1.5 hrs. of solid practice.

So much better than the usual noodle for 2 minutes, check internet for a whilte, rinse & repeat cycle that I've been doing for the past 1.5 years.

This is very encouraging to hear !

I have suggested similar type of things in this topic http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=20166&hl=Practice+Schedule

Just stick with it and things will start to happen smile.gif

I'd rather put up 1 hour of theory, and an hour of jam containing all of those techniques. jamming=best way to make practise fun!

I love using a timer....the whole purpose of it is to keep me focused and on schedule. If I have time after I accomplish everything I need to for the day then you can noodle and jam, or you could just set aside some time in your routine to do this. smile.gif

Using the timer was only part of the solution. The other, more important, part of the solution was to unplug my wireless antenna from the computer so that internet access was disabled. If I had to put a number on it, I'd bet my average "practice" session was 75% surfing the internet, 25% noodling. ph34r.gif

Thats why when I practice, if I am improvising over backing tracks or composing, I always sit as far away from computer as possible. I get messages on msn or email pop ups , if I responded immediately I would never get anything done smile.gif

So true Pedja!

I don't have the exact same problem I think. If I practice, than I stop surfing the net, and do what I am supposed to do. But I am addicted to wasting time before the screen anyway.. If I had no Internet, than I would practice much more.

Don't go that extreme , if you had no internet you wouldn't be on GMC smile.gif

I went through a whole week of a solid practice schedule.

I split it up into 2 chunks. 1:40 before work and 1:00 after work.

I was able to do all 7 morning sessions and 5 evening sessions. One evening session I missed was for church band practice though, so that ought to count for something.

I feel like I've made some pretty good increases for only a week's worth of practicing. Yes, it's not as much fun as the guitar doodle/internet combo I've been doing for the past year and a half, but I got way more accomplished in a lot less time.

Very good to hear about progress you are making with your new practice regime. You should try to persist on it because it will be very rewarding experience in the end (the progress you make after each week).
