Question 1: Ok first of all, am I the only one that just can't get into Dream Theater? Everyone else loves them, but I just can't stand the vocals, they sound like a Geddy Lee ripoff which I'm not a big fan of him in the first place. They try to make their songs so complex that I just don't feel that entire songs are connected and united by one idea or theme. Like they are like "Ooh lets make a weird feeling, so we have 2/4, then 7/4, then 5/4, oh and then 11/4!" Stuff like that. I heard about how what a great band they were so I checked them out on Youtube, didn't like too much, but people insisted that they are really good. So I bought Images and Words, and still I the only song I like on the whole album is Under a Glass Moon, the rest are just annoying and seem to just ramble on and on and on, it's like they can't just get the song done so they make them like 12 and even 24 minutes sometimes. They have way too many acoustic interludes. If the intro to a song is acoustic then I'm most likely going to change it something that is more aggressive and gets my attention. I paid for a progressive metal album, not acoustic. I know acoustics play a role in progressive, but they do it wayyyy too much. Finally, everyone talks about how John Petrucci is like this guitar god, I seriously don't see what makes him so good. All the melodies sound the exact same, his playing doesn't sound too unique to me, maybe I just haven't listened to enough. It isn't that I don't like progressive metal, because I absolutely love Symphony X. Their vocals are 50x better IMO, songs are structured and are connected together, and I love Michael Romeo's guitar playing. Way more unique to me, he uses all kinds of weird scales, a lot of extended chord arpeggios, WAY cooler riffs, and a lot of cool sweeping and tapping licks (Smoke and Mirrors, Sea of Lies, etc.)

Question 2: I looked at a picture of Opeth and I notice they have 5 members. Ok so I check their Wikipedia profile and it says that they have a keyboardist. What? I just got one of their albums and I can assure you there are absolutely no keyboards on the whole thing, yet they have a keyboardist, don't get it. Is it like ...And Justice for All where Metallica edited out all the bass because they didn't like Newstead or something?

Question 3: Ok I was watching I jazz tune by John Coltrane on youtube. Yes the melody is really and sax solo was really awesome but I was watching the chord changes and there is a new chord every 0.0002 seconds no kidding, I mean do they really change that fast, and not even hold on to one sound for more then 0.0002? The video was this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2kotK9FNEYU

I agree with the Dream Theather thing. Too complicated and clean for my taste. I think they are too skilled to make good music(for my taste anyway).
Gen have showed me some cool Dream Theather stuff, but it's not a band(or style) that I can start diggin.

Opeth got a keyboardist on their latest album Ghost Reveries.

Yeah jazz is crazy tongue.gif (Giant Steps is a great tune btw biggrin.gif )

Well, Opeth do have keyboardist, but its not like Keyboards you would hear in Children Of Bodom or Sonata Arctica. All the giant orchestrations, piano's and organs you hear and weird effects for Ghost Reveries is there keyboardists.

If you dislike Dream Theater that much, then don't listen to them. It sounds like you are trying to force yourself to love them, just give up if you dont like, from what it seems, not a single aspect of them. If you are wondering why people love them so much, look at why you dislike them. to you 12 and 14 minute songs might be boring or unnecessary, but i happen to like that, quite alot actually since Dream Theater can keep my attention, i love the acoustic songs and interludes, i can pick out and individualize his melodies, solo's and riffs. I Love everything about them.

And Jazz, well thats just one song, i wouldnt generalize an entire genre off of one song.

Hey,

At first I argree with The Uncreator, don't force yourself do like something. And there alot more people out there who dont like Dream Theater wink.gif (My teacher said the same as Robin about Dream Theater, that they are too skilled)
I don't like all their stuff, but I like most of it.

About John Petrucci, I dont know, but I dont think that he sounds the same all the time, not at all huh.gif (at least for me)

And Jazz, it is crazy stuff wink.gif
In my opinion jazz is a style, you slowly have to get into

you dont have to listen to Dream Theater just because most of the people do, i love Dream Theater and i find more than just Odd Time Signatures and progressive riffs in their song, plus i like Labrie's vocals, see? all of us got our own tastes, so you dont have to like Dream Theater cause most of the people do. If you didnt like them then you should stop listening to them i believe.

Ok over the last week or so I have been listening to Dream Theater a lot lol. Reading this thread that I posted makes me think I'm stupid now lol. The album has really grown on me and now I really like them a lot. Favorite song is a tie between Metropolis Part 1 and Under a Glass Moon. The isntrumental section in Metro Part 1 is insane!!! The rest are amazing though as well, Pull Me Under and the second song on the album (I forget the name). Metropolis Part 2: Scenes from a Memory and Falling into Illusion (I think that is what it is called) are coming in the mail because the Images and Words album is so cool! I've noticed every single song either has something to do with "light" or "eternal dance."

I've learned most of the riffs in Under a Glass Moon and am working on the solo which is amazingly creative.

I can agree about DT vocal, actually,James used to do quite good job in studio BUT live??
It's too poor imho, articulation ends on just A,E,I,O and U,specially on high notes.
I'm quite fun of their older work but lately I lost my taste in that kind of music,
maybe it's my age or som. biggrin.gif

Can't tell much about Opeth cause I'm not that familiar with the band but they DO have a keyboard.

And about Coltrane and Jazz, well, there are chords played really fast but that's usually
personal point of view, not strict chord progression.
Adding bunch of chords over just one main chord, that's how things work in Jazz. wink.gif
