Long story short... a Fender strat can obtain any sound you want. There are lots of things to research but the biggest focus will be on the pickups.
Single coils are great, especially for solo work (think SRV with his Texas Special Single coils in his strat). Other options are humbuckers that are sized for single coil slots (see Seymour Duncan's George Lynch Li'l Screamin' Demon pickups as an upgrade). And finally you CAN get a strat in Dual Humbucker (HH), or humbucker and two single coils (HSS) for heavy metal options. I personally own a Fender Stratocaster "Big Apple" which has two humbuckers in it and a Hardtail bridge (very rare). Seymour Duncan pickups: '59 in the neck and Pearly Gates Plus in the bridge. I can get EVERY sound from heavy metal to blues to country twang... mainly because of the special switching this guitar has which allows it to use single coil options. See link here. The modern version of the Big Apple is the Fender "Fat Strat". They aren't made with quite as good of components as the Big Apple but they will do what you need and have many of the same pickup features. Big Apple Strats are AWESOME buys. Because most people think HH Strats are silly they tend to sell for around $600 dollars US on Ebay. They are the equivalent construction quality to modern Fender Deluxe stratocasters that sell for around $1200 to $1500 new in the US. They were only made for 2 years and are very unique to the Fender brand... as such I predict they will be worth much in the future AND they sound great to boot! Just some ideas and suggestions. Some good advice Hardtail
 My point of view is that I am a purist - strats have a very definate sound ... until you start poking around inside them trying to make them sound like something else ... why wouldn't you buy something else in the first place? Sounds like you would be more suited to a Les Paul or something else with a Humbucker if you want that kind of sound. Sometimes only a strat sound will do, and I keep mine for those occasions, but I am keeping it stock, maybe I'll put some vintage pickups in it, and I'll get an LP too one of these days. If I want a different sound I'll use a different guitar. Of course if you can only afford one guitar thats fine, I made do with just a strat for years, but it makes sense to match your guitarto the sound you want not the other way around. Just my view, feel free to ignore me and go with Hardtails advice which is excellent if you want to get different sounds out of a strat. -------------------- Check out my Instructor profile

I have blue lace pickups in my strat and they really suck. Its still a thin cutting tone, but they seem to have less character than classic strat pickups. that's bad to hear, i really wanted to mod a strat with laces! but yeah, perhaps the other colors are better.

Hardtail I must have been tired when I wrote that... I like PRS but I meant to say I'd rather have an ESP for metal only because I like the way they play and look and I really always loved Metallica's sound.
