Long story short... a Fender strat can obtain any sound you want. There are lots of things to research but the biggest focus will be on the pickups.

Single coils are great, especially for solo work (think SRV with his Texas Special Single coils in his strat). Other options are humbuckers that are sized for single coil slots (see Seymour Duncan's George Lynch Li'l Screamin' Demon pickups as an upgrade). And finally you CAN get a strat in Dual Humbucker (HH), or humbucker and two single coils (HSS) for heavy metal options.

I personally own a Fender Stratocaster "Big Apple" which has two humbuckers in it and a Hardtail bridge (very rare). Seymour Duncan pickups: '59 in the neck and Pearly Gates Plus in the bridge. I can get EVERY sound from heavy metal to blues to country twang... mainly because of the special switching this guitar has which allows it to use single coil options. See link here.

The modern version of the Big Apple is the Fender "Fat Strat". They aren't made with quite as good of components as the Big Apple but they will do what you need and have many of the same pickup features. Big Apple Strats are AWESOME buys. Because most people think HH Strats are silly they tend to sell for around $600 dollars US on Ebay. They are the equivalent construction quality to modern Fender Deluxe stratocasters that sell for around $1200 to $1500 new in the US. They were only made for 2 years and are very unique to the Fender brand... as such I predict they will be worth much in the future AND they sound great to boot!

Just some ideas and suggestions. Hope that helps.

Some good advice Hardtail smile.gif

My point of view is that I am a purist - strats have a very definate sound ... until you start poking around inside them trying to make them sound like something else ... why wouldn't you buy something else in the first place? Sounds like you would be more suited to a Les Paul or something else with a Humbucker if you want that kind of sound.

Sometimes only a strat sound will do, and I keep mine for those occasions, but I am keeping it stock, maybe I'll put some vintage pickups in it, and I'll get an LP too one of these days. If I want a different sound I'll use a different guitar.

Of course if you can only afford one guitar thats fine, I made do with just a strat for years, but it makes sense to match your guitarto the sound you want not the other way around.

Just my view, feel free to ignore me and go with Hardtails advice which is excellent if you want to get different sounds out of a strat.

I see both of your points smile.gif
My reason for switching my strat around was to make it more metal. Why not just buy a metal guitar?Well for one at the time i coudnt afford another guitar and 2. my dad gave me this guitar so its special to me.Funny thing is when i bought a metal guitar (Jackson DK2) it never sounded as goos as my fender did,but man did it look better and the beck was amazing.I even put a dimebucker in the jackson still never cared for it over my fender.

My fender is a Deluxe series stratocaster with a mini switch that gives you 7 pickup options,I installed a Seymour Duncan sh-6 distortion humbucker in bridge (which i had to have custom done and pickguard cut as it was a s/s/s style before).Only thing i hate about it is the 21 fret neck ,the dumbest thing i have ever heard of. tongue.gif

So i guess its like why do some people buy a old junk car and fix it up when they could just by a nice one that already works?Cause thats the fun of it fixing it up as you go modifying it and buying better parts.basically buildinga guitar exactly how you want it without forking out all t hat cash at one time.I still need to replace the single coils for something maybe stacked (i hate single coils) and now i need to have the frets recrowned maybe since i have played it hard for 10 years but i will always keep this guitar.I have been to hell and back with it. smile.gif

Sorry but for some reason harttail's post was at top when i look and i never saw yours laugh.gif .Anyway i know many will disagree with me but if you wanna really play metal you Have to get a guitar with humbucker's no question about it .Sure you can by single coil sized humbuckler's but thats not going to really get the job done.If your idols are playing with humbucker's there is a reason for it smile.gif

symon, Ever since I heard Marcus' solos, I have been dying for an Yngwie signature strat. Yesterday, during lunch, I went over to Manies to check one out. When I got one off the wall, much to my horror I discovered that they lacquer their necks to hell. There was so much on the neck, that I thought that it would literally rub off. I like my necks with natural finish, ala Ibanez, so I was very disappointed. Boy was I glad I checked one out up close before ordering. Saved me a lot of aggravation. My new plan is to buy a Jem and have it professionally scalloped. I saw one being sold on Ebay and it looked great. Apparently the inlay is so deep, that even a fairly aggressive scalloping doesn't hurt it. I guess what I'm trying to say is. make sure you know what your getting before you lay your money down.

Very good point smile.gif
And if your going to buy online or mail order here's my opinion.I am a power seller on Ebay and have sold a my fair share of guitars and gear on there. So if you buy on ebay what to look for is 1.there feedback 2.a return policy 3.shipping price 4.hardshell case if they dont send it in a hardshell it may get beat up.If you buy through a store make sure there in buisness for awhile now and they have a return policy along with 45 day best price ,which means if you buy from them and you find another company like musicians friend list it cheaper they pay you the difference.Just wanted to say its ok to buy a guitar you havent played just as long as you got a good return policy and can afford it. smile.gif

shrederman, I couldn't agree more. There is no reason not to buy from ebay, especially if both you and the seller are in the states. I have been buying on ebay for some time now, and have had nothing but positive experience. The precautions you spelled out are right on. Very sensical. Btw, I just sold my first item on ebay today smile.gif (not a guitar).

Boris

LOL, I just realized how bad "live in the states" might sound to the rest of the world. No disrespect intended at all. Sorry.

Hmm. I have blue lace pickups in my strat and they really suck. Its still a thin cutting tone, but they seem to have less character than classic strat pickups. Certainaly in no way a substitute for a humbucker - mayber other lace pickups are better.

I'm surprised nobody threw out the Stratocaster VG, the modeling strat with the roland digital pickup, with the turn of the knob you can get a humbucker sound, dropped D tuning, and I think like 18 different tones, all in the classic strat body. Of course this guitar is rather cost prohibitive.

As for scalloping the Jem, I could be wrong (never played/held one) but in a recent Guitar World where they interviewed Steve Vai about his 20th, he mentioned that all JEMs came scalloped... So I'd get one on your lap before sending it off to a luthier.

ohmy.gif that's bad to hear, i really wanted to mod a strat with laces! but yeah, perhaps the other colors are better.

Oh no... not another Jem owner. laugh.gif

Just my opinion but for those prices I'd rather get a PRS. And for metal!? PRS rocks IMO.

I must have been tired when I wrote that... I like PRS but I meant to say I'd rather have an ESP for metal only because I like the way they play and look and I really always loved Metallica's sound.
