Hey there! smile.gif

We are keen on keeping all material on GMC legal, and working to get licences and permission from different copyright holders (a very slow process...).

At the moment, we have a general "streaming licence", which make the following possible:

-interpret and record famous songs as backing tracks or part of a lesson (you don't have to make a new arrangement)

The following is not possible yet:

-make a tab of a famous song (not even your own interpretation)
-use an existing recording of a famous song (from an album or similar)

Hopefully we will have some more options in the near future! biggrin.gif If you have an idea for a lesson, but are not sure if it is legal or not, please ask on the instructor board or email me!

Related topic: Are we allowed to use classical material?

So its ok to show how to play a famous song (record your own backing track of it) but we can't include a gtp tab of it (how we play it) or any tab below lessons videos even for parts of the song ? Can we write down in words what we are playing , like G here C there or do the same thing in audio with voice ? wink.gif

Unfortunately, we can not have a lesson that explains a famous song, because we don't have a license that covers copyrights for tabs. And to have a lesson without the tab would not be a complete lesson.

It would of course be great to have a complete lesson of a famous song! We are working to make that possible, and I just wanted to update you on where we are right now with the copyrights, and let you know what actually is possible to do at the moment.

For example, you could do a lesson with a famous song as background (your own recording), but compose a new melody/solo/improvisation. Then you could teach your composition and provide tabs for it. And it would be in the spirit of that famous song, like an in the style of lesson.

You don not have to do this kind of lesson, it is just information of what could be possible if you get an idea or inspiration for it. smile.gif

As an example - we will soon live a lesson by Hisham where he plays a solo of his own, on top of "Metallica - Nothing Else Matters" (his own interpretation and recording of the song of course). Stay tuned for this lesson - it's a cool one! smile.gif

Thanks Andrew! biggrin.gif

Yes this is absolutely an upgrade - unfortunately what remains is the tricky part. To publish tabs for copyrighted material we have to contact each copyright holder! Given the fact that they most of the time don't seem to want to cooperate - it is difficult...!

This is a step forward definitely!!!..Is it maybe possible to include tab on the video itself (on screen) because of the streaming licence ? wink.gif Or we could maybe speak (audio) something like you are playing the 3rd fret of the E string here twice than go to 5th fret on A string etc and show the tune that way? I'm sure members would love to see some famous songs lessons.. wink.gif

Great advancement either way! Good work Maria and Kris!

How about a lesson on a famous song, not tabbed but with close up on the hand and real slow movement. So studens will have to look and copy.

Could for ease be printed text in the video saying which scale is used at the moment, or soloing i "C pentatonic".. something.

If it's only the matter of printing tabs but the playing itself can be filmed I think it's doable. Just if it's explained to students why tabs can't be posted. ...and we make it clear they can't go lookup tabs elsewheter to post here. Cos they will find the tabs in other places... Just not to bring them here.

Would that work?

Everyone want famous lessons for sure - but we don't want to present it in any way, before we have the rights to show the tabs..! sad.gif

Unfortunately on-screen thabs will not be seen differently, in a legal perspective.

Absolutely that will work - and we have considered that.

However - we won't go for this until we know for sure that we cannot use the tabs. And right now it does look like we might get permission for some songs! smile.gif

So for now all we can do is wait - we promise we will get back as soon as there is an option to teach famous material. smile.gif

Indeed a good step forward.

Copyright issue is big for classical repertoire, too.

I have always wanted to show pieces by 20 century Latin American composers.

Hope to hear more news!

Really deep topic imho.

From my point of view, teaching others to your own stuff( the way how it works atm)
is a lot more cool than teaching famous tunes and licks smile.gif
On the other hand,we all know very well that most of members would love to learn
famous riffs and solos,I wanted the same when I was beginner, hand on heart wink.gif

It's a great challenge to teach your own music.
I know also that if we have the right licences we can increase the lesson topics...
