Left Wrist Injury

I sustained a wrist injury a couple of months ago while string bending - and it hasn't gone away. I even took ibuprofen and stopped playing for four days. I will say that it stops hurting when I play, this includes when I bend. But I'm having difficulty performing certain tasks at work when my left wrist gets hung up in a certain positions. Do any of you play with nagging wrist injuries? I'm considering laying off for a while, but know the decision would be a difficult one to stick to.

broke my left arm when I was younger, couldn't twist my wrist to make chords, so I had to switch to playing left handed, my wrist still will not turn parallel to the guitar- so it is always at a angle a little bit, and I have to grip the pick sort of like a caveman
I have to be careful because I need to have it parallel to have fluid alt picking but my wrist tends to get sore quick

Have you gone to the doctor? You should go urgent if you didn't. That's what I always do when I feel something wrong with my fingers or wrist.

I strongly agree with Gabe and out of sheer coincidence, I had a conversation with an orthopedic specialist last evening. He told me that the carpal tunnel syndrome happens (in simple terms) when a nerve is caught behind some tendons and it can't get out of there. He also mentioned something about an Electromiography which is meant to be a test which tells you if you have the syndrome for certain.

My advice: go see a doc about it as quickly as possible. Internet medicine is not recommended wink.gif

Good advice - I will go tomorrow. But I think most doctors will prescribe anti- inflamitories and tell me to lay off for a while before any kind of procedure. I mean strained tendons can take a while (as in months) to heal. It's just the thought of laying off makes me depressed. I guess I'm also wondering how common this is? I'm sure a lot of you bend a lot and apply heavy vibrato daily - does it ever cause you discomfort afterwards? If so have you had to stop playing for a period of time?

Yes, it's common for me to have to rest my fretting hand's wrist. It's irritating doing so, but I'd rather it healed, as the other outcome involves not being able to play for much longer.

In all seriousness. GET TO A DOCTOR RIGHT AWAY. You only get one pair of arms/hands. If you are experiencing pain, you need to have a health professional take a look. Advice in a forum is not the same as medical treatment. I've injured myself just by playing guitar in the past. (carpal tunnel syndrome) so I've been there. The doctor will let you know if you need to see a specialist.

If you are having pain during a given activity, eg. playing guitar, STOP!!!!! You may risk permanent injury otherwise. So yes, stop playing until you can get some help, and get better. The guitar isn't going away. It will be there for ya smile.gif

* I had to wear wrist braces on both arms for SIX MONTHS and not play. It wasn't easy. But it was that or have them cut in to my arms. After six months I could play again, a year later I was better.

!!!!This is why I'm SOOOOO big on STRETCHING and doing hand work before each video chat and before each practice. Once you get better, stretch/warmup your hands/arms before each practice. Without fail. If you can't stretch, I would say honestly, don't play. Wait until you can stretch. Some players never have a problem and never stretch. I'm not one of those. Sounds like you may not be either.

Todd

It wasnt quite my wrist, but the back of my left hand was in constant pain a few months ago ( personally i blame my stubbornness combined with ben's land of legato tongue.gif ) Anyways though, as you said, the doctors gave me anti inflammatories and told me to put down the guitar a while. During this time, All i did was study music theory, did ear training, listened to solos, and caught up on other parts of my life. Your musical journey does not have to stop!. I also did some physiotherapy and gave it lots of rest, now i play with better habits ( posture, frequent breaks, and paying attention to the slightest strain and pain.). And it doesnt hurt anymore! so go see your doctor!

Judging on how well Todd plays these days, I think that his recovery was an amazing thing. He has great technique even tho his hands went through what he described. Let us know what the doc said, ok?

Well thanks! smile.gif Cosmin is spot on in saying you can make it through this. And to answer your question I have not had a relapse since my recovery. Due in part to my obsessive focus on warming up and cooling down each time I play. I tend to play at a rather intense level for long periods, and that can push the arms/hands to their limits. So a good recovery regime can really help. Just quickly then.

1.)STOP playing anytime you feel pain.
2.)ALWAYS warmup with light stretching prior to playing and light stretching upon stopping playing.
3.)use an ice cube or bag of frozen peas if needed to ice down your forearms after a practice session until you fully recover. Don't go crazy with it, one cube is enough.
4.)Drink plenty of water during your recovery and before/after practice. It flushes toxins out that build up during practice in your arms.

* Finally, Ask your doctor if you should see a specialist if the pain continues.

Playing guitar is almost like doing sports. It's physical. You need to warm up, cool down, drink lots of water, rest afterward etc. Again, some players can get by without injury and never do any of this stuff. I"m just not one of those. Many players are not one of those types and just ignore it and injure themselves. I did that to myself. But I"ve learned better since smile.gif

I won't be original in this case. Visit a Doctor. Some problems left unfixed can cause another ones. I don't say that below advice is good for You but..

Just a little warning as an opposite to Your situation -

Wrist sometimes hurts - especially when playing long runs with baree chords or practicing really strong and effective legato licks. As Tod said - in such a situation make a break or just switch for something more demanding for the right hand.

There is a thin red line between regular tiredness of the wrist and some true health problems. ALWAYS go to doctor if You have a feeling this could be something more than just being tired after intense practice.

I did go to the doctor and he said it was most likely tendonitis not carpal tunnel. He said carpal tunnel is usually felt on the inside part of the wrist (with your palm facing you). The tunnel is where those nerves and tendons connect to your hand. (Think Luke Skywalker in The Empire Strikes Back, remember when he's checking out his new hand?) My pain was on the opposite side. He prescribed a good time- released anti- inflammatory called Lodine and told me to lay off playing for a little while. I'm already feeling much better.

Glad to hear you sorted things out, man! Now, there is only two things to take care of:

- be patient and do not rush into playing until you are fully recovered
- after starting practicing again, take care of your hands, ok?

Sorry to hear about this trouble sad.gif

Are there maybe any light exercises on and off guitar that you could do to help with recovery?
Sometimes when my wrist hurts I would just stop playing what I am immediately and make a pause. Its important to stretch before playing for this reason and also to make pauses during long practice sessions. Some people are more prone to these problems then others. Also it is a good warning sign to check if your hands positioning is the most comfortable for you.

Hope you recover soon! smile.gif

Bogdan, can you please post a link with those old recovery exercises I did for GMC a few years ago? That one with the rolling wrists would be perfect for the situation, but I somehow can't find it sad.gif Thank you!
