I was just watching this and thought I'd share it. It's a great example of correct picking technique. Rusty picks entirely from the wrist and doesn't force things by tensing up his forearm and using the elbow. It goes to show that you can achieve great results by just letting the movement remain small and come from the wrist. smile.gif

I've been noticing great improvements in my own picking technique ever since I started focusing entirely on my fretting hand and letting my right hand completely relax and do its own thing. For a more detailed description on what I mean, have a look at my Practice Journal thread here

whoa! dude that was just sick! Rusty burns like a wildfire man, I noticed before he really turned on the gas the picking motion almost looks like it comes from his forefinger and thumb as well as the wrist but as soon as he hits the gas the fingers lock in and the wrist movement takes over. If he isnt carefull one day he will finish something like that demonstration and discover his pick has completely disolved and his forefinger is a bloody nub blink.gif

yeah, he is technically incredible, wow! I must learn a bit from that strict rist motion, I tend to move my arm a bit, I wouldn't recommend getting used to it, because it can slow you down, if you want play as fast possible, do it like Rusty!

but, more importantly try to think of the notes in terms of triads instead of all the tones in the scale. That's one thing Kiko Loureiro really focuses on, and boy, does he sound musical.

He says he always thought about scales like 1 -3 - 5 -7 -9 - 11 - 13 instead of 1 - 2- -3 -4 etc

Crazy speed! Personally for me it's a bit too much I am not crazy about his tone and about his melodies I think people can relate more to that than just a crazy shredding! Still very impressive!

Yeah, it's odd how he's using massive thumb action in the first bit, and then changes to the wrist. I've seen players change their picking technique massively for certain passages (Andy James comes to mind, also with the thumb action - I believe it was section over only 1 string, or perhaps 2, nothing more).

Nice technique, but I definately agree that this video is just *widdly widdly* laugh.gif

Great video and great example of proper technique smile.gif This seems to be coming up quite a bit lately and we discuss it nearly every time in my video chat. "Tensing Up" is something of an epidemic among players and attention to proper technique can be really beneficial.

"Picking from the Elbow" is something that should be banned and be written about in a booklet that comes with every guitar smile.gif Maybe bumper stickers? "SAVE YOUR ELBOW! PICK FROM THE WRIST!"

His use of finger rotation to create a second pivot point is quite good. This is a somewhat advanced technique as it creates two fulcrum points and can greatly increase pick tip speed. Also, it reduces stress on the wrist so that endurance can be maintained over long passages/songs.

God Bless Rusty Cooley! smile.gif

P.S. NOTICE: His brilliantly proper classical hand position about 40 seconds in. The man is a veritiable clinic in the benefits of good form. My classical instructor would love him smile.gif
