Sweeping Method, More efficient practice...?

Hi muris,

I've been practicing sweep picking for some time now, a good 4 months doing an average of 10 hours each week whilst I'm in uni (though from next week I'm doing 5 hours every day, so hopefully will help me quite a bit). It's still not great and slow to progress, however I've really found two ways to practice sweeping and I wanted to know if you have an opinion on which one is better before I start getting into this properly?

method 1 - to practice the same shape (either 3string or 5string) over and over, say 1 hour doing the simple major 3string and 1 hour doing major 5string.

or

method 2- to practice several shapes (either 3string or 5string) switching between them, so for example playing a chord progression with 5 string shapes for 1 hour and then another progression with 3 string shapes for 1 hour.

Which way is more efficient? because with one I won't learn all the shapes but will get good at one, but the other i'm leaning all the shapes. Is there one in particular that you used and found helpful?

Also, what sort of speeds should I look at for this? Typically I do around 60bmp 16th notes, but then speed up a bit every 15 mins and end up around 80 or 90 bpm (which I find quite hard). It feels ok around 60 but not amazingly synched up, will I still improve if I play slower, or do I need to be pushing myself to get better?

Hi Adam smile.gif

I must be honest with you,I never had any practicing routine,
I was just drawing a goal and running for it.
Tho I probably made million mistakes going that way biggrin.gif

So I would switching through shapes,do not lock yourself to just one,my opinion.
And do NOT look at the watch, just practice and have fun while doing that!!
Practicing has to be fun, otherwise you're doing it against your will which isn't greatest thing tho.

About timing,do not look that much on tempo and speed but on articulation and clean playing.
Sweeping is tricky technique I must admit,
when you're playing alternate you're able to feel every note,
obviously cause you're picking the same number of notes as you're playing.
But in sweeping you can get lost, articulation wise.
So try to hear every note you're playing and try to feel
when you're hitting string/note,that is most important,
otherwise you'll just sweep around with lot of noise etc.

Hope I helped a bit,let me know if you need anything else. smile.gif

Thanks, yea I think I'm just worrying a little too much about exactly how to practice, I just need to be patient and keep going. Perhaps soon I'll record and upload a soundbyte or video so you can see if I'm doing anything in particular wrong? I recently started hitting a downstroke at the top of the patterns rather than an upstroke, which I think is probably better but I'm still waiting to see how it works out. If you could take a look at my video perhaps just to make sure there's nothing glaring that is wrong I'd really appretiate it! Would that be ok?

As far as I can see you're doing it just right Adam,
picking hand is moving without effort, timing is good as well.
Now simply upgrade your speed step by step
but keep it clean as possible, just like in this video, well done. smile.gif

Muris. I'm really struggling with sweeping also. Going from Low E down to High E I think my technique is all wrong and I'm so incredibly slow. It's like being stuck behind an old lady getting off the bus. But when I go from high E to low E, my technique is fine I think and I can play patterns well and quickly. So I sound like I'm stuck behind the old lady getting off the bus and when I hit the pavement (high E string) and head up the street (to Bass E) it's suddenly like I'm being whisked away by an invisible rocket.

Any tips at all for getting both down and up sweeps the same tempo and quality as it's annoying. I have to do odd rhythm sweeps that don't really work in every song sad.gif

Can you tell from audio or does it need to be video?

I will try and get a video of it if possible. Hopefully my phone can do a good enough video. My house is like Drucula's House. No light anywhere.

Well I could try with audio as well
but I can't tell why something is wrong,
all I can say is what is wrong,
which won't be of great help I guess. huh.gif

I'll get a video up asap. I like my sweeping a bit. But it isn't fast or anything. Just add some nice slow melodic sweeps in some songs. Cheers for helping out. I will try and upload later.

Sure,looking forward to it! smile.gif

And do not worry about speed atm,
just watch Adam's take and you'll see that timing, accuracy
and clean playing is the most important here,
speed will come naturally, trust me. smile.gif

AdamB Could you record a video which shows how much of your pick your sweeping with? Because it looks like you're digging too deep.

EDIT:

Sorry for the interruption Muris.
