GMC Forum _ CHILL OUT _ My Youtube Vids Stolen By Datab.us?

I ran across ALL of my youtube vids on some site called datab.us? It looks like they just compile youtube videos and then put their own adverts all over it and call it their own. Can you guys find your vids on here as well? If you are a youtube "partner" I wonder if this stuff counts for your plays or not?

Yes. it looks like they have all my video's as well. I just typed in my youtube user name into the search box and there they all were.

There are wads of "aggregator" sites out there. They just crawl the web looking for content and then put adds on it

Probably anything with guitar in the title gets aggregated.
Most of my YouTube channel is up on those sites and very few of them are actual gear vids.
Everything is everybody's.

Looks like they've branded some of the videos with their own logo too. Some people attribute no financial value to non-tangible things.....until there's some money or promotion of your own business to gain from it. I'd definitely put my name / website in the corner of all my stuff before publishing. If they get nicked, at least you get some promotion from it, and if they remove your branding that's even more black and white wrong in the eyes of the law.

Well said!! That's really a very good bit of advice. I'd been considering some sort of graphic or watermark or something just to have all my content branded for just such things. Good call

I have a feeling that the Guitar Show YouTube Channel would have left branded videos alone, never mind putting their own logo on them
I notice on some of the teachers videos here they are wearing T-shirts with Guitar Master Class printed on which is a great idea, I think that would be even harder to remove than a static logo on the corner of a vid.

I think the views you get from plays on that site will actually be counted towards your total number of views on Youtube. This is because the youtube videos are embedded.
Now it is really awful to see sites like this, I have always wondered - does anyone really browse and use those type of sites?
This curiosity also expands to : does anyone answer marriage proposals, viagra and lottery win spam emails?
When it comes to fake accounts on youtube, I find it annoying but it is really comforting to know that YT does a nice job in keeping content as duplicate free as possible. Such accounts are suspended all the time and there are mechanisms for removing duplicate/stolen content.

I had the same question? Who would use this type of site instead of youtube? and why? Maybe in countries where youtube is blocked they somehow tunnel in and provide it?

A quick googling says embedded videos don't add to your number of views, so I would suggest spending the time changing your settings not to allow embedded videos to play that will give them the option of watching them through youtube. A tedious job for you though Todd

My research indicated the same. Still, every eyeball is still an eyeball At this level, the only real enemy is anonymity, as they say. So I say let em grab em all If anyone gets an extra view so much the better. Would be nice to have the views count but, eyeballs.....

Some other things I didn't mention but would like to. Much of which is regarding actually selling stolen material. I'm not going to name names, but what I say can be looked up.
Amazon kindle books is awash with piracy of our industry (and others). There are 100's of guitar tab books on kindle from a certain individual, and for almost any guitarist under the sun. Not a single one has a publisher name or copyright statement inside, just professional tabs that look like they have been lifted then sold on Amazon. Another book promo vid uses music from a famous guitarist, and even if the author played it, he didn't write the tune.
I contacted the legal department of the huge publisher who I know own the copyrights but never heard back and it's still rife on Amazon, I guess they have bigger fish to fry? no idea. I noticed one of the guys stuff who looks to have had their stuff nicked is a JamTrack Central artist.
As the law stands Amazon would have to take this stuff down only if a DMCA take down request was made. If amazon don't know about it / aren't told then they are not liable and neither do they have any responsibility to make sure it doesn't happen in the first place. It would be hard to argue websites should be held liable for copyright infringements from content they don't publish themselves, this might open vague interpretation for websites that genuinely try their best to police, pre-DMCA take down.
I made a DMCA takedown request before and after my work was taken down (a book) the website had a system to recognize further infringements of the same work and stop them automatically, which is good faith, I'm not sure they are legally obliged to do that. I think the technology is there, A.I. can recognize cat vids on youtube.
For anyone interested this is an example of a legal copy of someones work, if you view the look inside there is a publisher statement and a copyright statement (the bit that tells you copying without holders permission is illegal), the Publisher is also listed in the product details:

Sure, if money is on the table, lawyers will one up. OTherwise, it's pretty hit or miss. On the buyer side, they just want something free or cheap typically.
