I know have a series of finger workouts that focus on getting the pinky in to shape. Most of my lessons have something to do with that principal. I should probably try to get more strength, since I tend to want to use third or even second finger sometimes for bends and such. It happens, mainly when playing acoustic, that I fret with my thumb. Early on I realized how useful it would be to utilize this ill regarded digit. I can't really do any bends with it though I just started to use my thumb when I began learning the Alice in Chains song "Don't Follow", which would be very difficult to play without stretching my thumb over the neck. I sometimes sneak the thumb over the fretboard when I'm strumming across all the strings at the same time (to help with the muting part). I may use my thumb on a chord but that is about it. In the upper register I sometimes struggle with the angle of my hand to reach notes and flow better, but the lessons here are really helping.
