Using your whole fretting hand is important. First check out Ben's new lesson, "Ben's Land Of Legato 3", and then post a response to today's topic.
How many of you use all 4 (or even 5??) fingers on your fretting hand? How often do you use your pinky? Are there specific techniques where you have problems using your pinky? |

I often fret the low E with my thumb - so I guess that makes 5 fingers. That's not to say it makes anything I do sound better :/

Great question. I didn't use my pinky for years. I finally started working it in. I know have a series of finger workouts that focus on getting the pinky in to shape. Most of my lessons have something to do with that principal. Here is a link
http://bit.ly/lessonnotes Once my pinky got up to speed as it were, it opened up a whole new realm of sonic/musical range in my lead playing. I don't usually incorporate the thumb, but now that I think about it, why not? Todd |

Guthrie Goven in this interview (Interview 2) towards the end of the video, swings his thumb under and around the neck to play the b string in a chord. you may have to sign up (but it's free) to see the interview, which is a wonderful interview.

I tend to play - one finger per fret approach so I'm using 4 most of the time. I sometimes sneak the thumb over the fretboard when I'm strumming across all the strings at the same time (to help with the muting part).
