Hi GMCers,
I started guitar around 1 and a half years ago and around the same time my sister bought herself a keyboard. We both took lessons in some institutes and hated it cause they made us play classical songs out of some books. So we decided to quit. I took lessons off UG (also various other free sites) and later joined GMC while my sis just gave up on keyboard. Today she picked it up again and decided to play. Her goal is to buy a good piano within a few months (as a birthday gift) but seriously she cant really play.

So what would be a good approach to learning piano. Is there some things she should start with first. I think she remembers how to read sheet music, but i guess she needs to refresh on that too.

I got some piano tabs for like Umbrella by Rhianna but she found them hard. So could you also recommend some easy and interesting piano songs. Ill get her signed up for lessons in a few weeks till then i just need something to keep her practicing. Thanks

Theory is the same, the notes are arranged differently and in a wider range but they're the same too. If you have your theory down, you're a few steps ahead of the game.

What's different is the mechanics of playing. All 10 fingers plus your feet are more independent players. You're pressing a key down through a good half-inch of travel.

It's one thing if you're just knocking out a sketch of a backing track for some guitar but if you're playing the instrument, it's totally a different critter.

here's one tip smile.gif

it is very important that your hands are relaxed when playing and there is a good exercise for that.. press any keys on keyboard (it could be neighboring 5 white keys, or any chords), and then release the pressure while keeping the sound on, and then slowly start to rotate the wrist but not loosing the sound.. rotate the wrist in all possible directions

You're welcome guys smile.gif

OK here's the next one biggrin.gif

When playing, you should move whole arm left or right, and to minimize movement of the wrist.. and also when hitting keys with fingers, all action shall be in fingers, rising fingers prior to hit, and the top of the hand shall be still.. you can put a coin on top of the hand and take care not to fall down while playing.

Hi GMCers,
I started guitar around 1 and a half years ago and around the same time my sister bought herself a keyboard. We both took lessons in some institutes and hated it cause they made us play classical songs out of some books. So we decided to quit.

As I'm sure you already know, most good teachers will start you out playing some easy tunes when first teaching. Some classical pieces are just real easy and cover what a beginner should be learning, this way you not only get the music theory, finger placement(guitar and keyboard/piano) as well as the basic note and chord sounds. Minuet in G comes readily to mind as one of these pieces.

Learning from a site like GMC or another will probably give you a good bag of licks and tricks but IMHO it won't make you a complete musician who can listen to a song and then play it or one who can transcribe what they are listening to and even write their own music. IMHO a complete musician can do all of these things and more and I feel the only way to get those skills is by either taking lessons( long expensive approach) or by going to a good music school(best way). I know if I had it to do all over again, I would have stuck to the lessons I was being taught when I was a kid and then went on to a school like Berklee College of Music.

Probably right about this, but for me I just want to learn a few things. I don't need to be the next Stevie Wonder. I just want a few basic things and a few GMC piano lessons would be perfect for me. smile.gif
