Increasing Speed

Oct 12 2009, 09:23 PM	GMC:er Posts: 14 Joined: 12-October 09	Hello everyone! I want to increase the speed of my play, but i don't know how i can do this the most effective. I am playing pentatonic scale runs at the moment along with a metronome, but i don't know if this is the right approach, if i want to increase my speed. I have been doing so for like 3 weeks, but i have only gained a little increasement in speed. I am feeling more confident about the the patterns of the pentatonic scale though, and my accuracy has increased aswell Does anyone have a suggestion for how i should change my practice? My suggestion is to learn the scale shapes, not the pattern he plays them in, just the shapes, then practice them (once you are comfortable with them), at the highest speed you can play them cleanly. Learning the names of each mode is useful also. If you do that I'd like to point out that "Minor" is also known as "Aeolian", and "Major" is also known as "Ionian". Even some great players like Joe Satriani don't have great picking but legato instead, perhaps he didn't practice picking that much in early ages and then somehow legato came like his trademark, who knows. There is no "perfect" practice, there is no "perfect" playing, you are only practicing to make it as perfect as you can. The more you do that, the more perfect it will become. It is simple as that. Play scales with metronome and increase 5bpm every 10 min until you're safe (no rush) 3. Play a solo along the backing track and learn it properly until you make no mistake. I absolutely agree, building speed needs a lot of practice, and it is a kind of long term goal, you won't become lightning fast in 4 weeks,, this needs some more devotion. Practicing with a click or a metronom is absolutely essential, warm up before practicing, start at a speed that is comfortable for you and only increase the tempo in small steps. There are things I can play while sleeping, but sometimes, because of lack of attention, I make a mistake. This happens from time to time, and most of the time I'm able to correct it right away and continue playing. I don't know exactly how often it happens, but it does happen and I wonder if I should practice this kind of things more, even if I can play them perfectly for about twice as fast when I concentrate.
