Here is where the magic happens: the REC board turns bedroom guitarists into real pros. Remember - it doesn't matter if you fail or pass, as long as you keep posting REC takes you will progress.

The entries will be graded by a number of instructors. After grading, members will be accredited with the appropriate points if they pass, and adjustments will be made to their REC level.
Passing grade is 6 or higher.

Original lesson: Ben's Land Of Legato by Ben Higgins

I've been practicing this for a little over 2 months, still not quite happy with timing but here it goes.

Hi Tadas!

Great! Don't stop practicing this one! Please keep it in your daily routine.

I notice the obvious timing issues, and the question that comes to mind is, are you able to play this tight at slower tempos? It would be important to practice at a comfortable tempo, play this tight and increase tempo gradually until your reach this speed. That's the way to master this one.

Btw, your legato technique is very good. The notes sound clean and clear, you just need to polish timing.

Very interesting.

I agree with Gab, how does this sound at a slower tempo?

And are you able to play this without any picking at all? If so it might be the actual picking hand that messes things up for you.

Some points of improvement:

* Your picking dynamics are too loud and they disrupt the smooth legato flow you have got going. As mentioned I wonder if they are needed at all. Either way I would suggest you just apply a minimal amount of picking pressure - and perhaps this change alone could fix the weird timing issue we are hearing.

* Try to fret the notes closer to the fretwire, this will not only give you better tone - but it will allow you to get an equal amount of sound/volume from the notes by applying less pressure. And being able to play with little pressure/tension is absolutely key for a good legato technique.

Overall your legato technique looks pretty good though, so maybe a simple change of strategy here could convey a totally different impression.

It could also be that your right hand is better a keeping time than your left hand - which explains why your hands are not totally in sync.

Hey there!

As usual there are good and bad news. I like you attitude and focused work on the instrument. Your legato has this promissing touch of not being just a soft "slip through" but a solid hammering and pulling. I can guess but strength looks just right. It should work on a clean tone as well or acoustic guitar If you want to challenge yourself really honestly..but....that's not complaint, a proposition for self recheck

Now...now suprise...the timing seems to be a problem and right hand that seems to become and enemy instead of support. Well, sometimes I try to explain that you need to "play a playstation" on your guitar. When you need and additional extra "kick" or something, you use a combination of keys. In legato supported by right hand it's similar. You only whit where the note will simultaneously happen wiht the left hand. Not earlier, not later....exactly at the same time.

Mind can trick us sometimes and create problems from simple things. I guess you mind is telling you that the pick stroke should be somewhere inbetween and..simply doesn't want to accept the fact they should work on the same "click" in mind.

The timing problem is the key here - you rush and then try to stretch the whole thing to....suprise...put the finger slightly before you can pick the same note with a pick. For my observations that causes the problem.

Knowing your previous work I'm sure you have a good sense of time and rhythm so you need to rather find a proper way of how your mind imagines the lick, rather than a raw practise. Tricky thing.
