I'm sure many of you have seen this already..
I haven't really listened to shred guitarists for years but lately I've been very inspired by Michael's precision, speed and the the idea of no limitations. I watch some of his videos now and then to remind myself what is possible.
My kind of belief is that we already have the ability inside us, we just have to uncover it. The only way to uncover it as by keeping practising.
I see it as a big block of rock, which contains a brilliant sculpture underneath. To get at the sculpture we have to keep chopping away at the rock until the sculpture starts to emerge
Also, even if we sometimes practice and don't see any progress for a while.. it doesn't matter. Just the act of practising is chopping away at the rock !
Indeed.... it reminds me of this quote:
To build a massive sky scraper building, you must lay endless amounts of underground foundation, only then will you be able to reach the sky
Great analogy Ben!! For an easy way to reference how your little bits of chopping are actually working think back to when you very first picked up a guitar and didn't know anything!!
Very nice words Ben, highly motivating video and post. I'd better get to practice as well
Indeed, it's all about us having no limits, and practicing as much as possible. Goals seem so far away sometimes, but they are actually very near. The more the person is calmer and patient, better it can observe infinity ahead of him, that awaits to be explored.
I don't know. I have listened to MAB before and his technique is flawless, not to mention he can play right and left-handed, with hands on both sides of neck. But I don't really like his music, just too soulless for me. Although he has a good vibrato, he just sweeps. Too. Much. In every song.
That was amazing! what a version!
What you said really hit me, I view guitar playing like that as well, it's like you chip away blocks slowly and painfully until the sculpture is just there and you can sort of "use" it anytime you want,
And I agree that practice gets you there, so it's really important to keep motivated to practice...I did that by playing the stuff I like that, playing along and stuff,
That tribute is amazing! I like his two albums with tributes to great artists and bands...
I agree with your words about how to move to the next level... Practising is the key and nothing is impossible should be our main phrases... I use to write this phrases and put them at my studio when I'm working on something new and feel a bit frustrated because It seems like if I'm not improving.
Steve Vai always has inspiring thoughts about this..
“The level of achievement that we have at anything, is a reflection, of how well, we were able to focus on it. Because the only thing that’s holding you back, is the way you’re thinking.”
– Steve Vai
Yeah he has 2 songs for randy. the mr crowley solo is sooo epic.
Also liked the symphony of destruction cover on that cd.
awesome. haha maybe a guitarteachers collab
Great point Ben...it is one of the reasons that I do not loose hope. I know what is inside of me, it is just being patient as the rock is shaped so it comes out... Again always great encouragement here!
I actually I think hes one of the few people who can shred, sweep, and pick at super high speeds and still retain a level of melody that inspires thought evokes emotion, Love MAB.
THE OZZY INSTRUCTOR COLLAB! !!!!!!!!!!
That is freaking BRILLIANT! If that's on deck COUNT......ME......IN Would be a great promo bit for GMC and crazy fun to work on.
This video is some of MB best playing IMHO, the structure and melody of the song are serving to restrain him enough to actually make him sound much much more well rounded that just sounding like a shred nut. Don't get me wrong, I"m not a hater nor huge fan of MAB, but I've always appreciated his skill and the audible aggression of his style. I might have even stolen some of the angrier bits of picking directly from him
Certain phrasing/picking just sounds aggressive/hostile and he has a real way with that sort of thing. Almost like he sat down and said "how can I make this phrase sound like I'm talking smack and want to start a fight?" Even if you aren't a fan of him in general, or any player, there is always something you can take away from listening to really good player like MAB
How come he hasn't been in any really good bands?
He does his solo career, he was in a band called Nitro Train in the 80's, pretty cheesy but some fun stuff. I think his interest for the past decade have been in doing clinics and teaching, I have seen him 4 times and the most recent visit about 10 months ago he had so much information to share, really cool guy in person.
Yeah, I read where he has a lot of commercial endorsement deals too. Maybe he'd rather do that than be on the road all the time.
Incredible tribute by MAB. Great words of wisdom also Ben.. love the analogy of the statue within the rock. We should have sticky filled with motivational qoutes.. be a nice place to visit when we are burned out and feel we have hit a wall.
