Here my issue. Im basically spending too little time on each lesson. GMC has so much variety that the moment i find a lesson hard or my guitar pratice time is up i skip it and move on to another. I basically tackle 3 lessons a day without finishing them, understanding or learning the tabs for them.

So how do you practice your lessons?

Do you do many lessons at a time?

How do you deal with hard lessons (im finding Gabriels Malnestemm 2 lesson hard)?

I really need to get organized and use my time effectively and derive the best restults out of my efforts and time. There are many things i want to learn, but i have to be dedicated to one lesson at a time.

And finally how do you structure you guitar practice time (do you have a schedule or you just play any lesson you want)?

Thanks

Jammer,
As mentioned in previous threads, building a routine can be challenging when you first start out, but dont worry!

What you want to avoid if possible, is starting a lesson, and moveing on too quickly from it. You really want to nail it before you move on.

If you are finding lessons such as gabriels Yngwie 2 lesson tricky (and it is a tricking lesson for a beginner) you can do either of the following two options.

Tackle each section of the lesson one peice at a time, slowly, i would also recommend useing a metronome! Take your time here, i can gaurentee you practicing slow and pricise is the fastest way to your goal.

Or move onto a slightly easier lesson, but one that you will find a little challenging.

Probably the first lesson i did straight after Kris's 101 series was Gabriels Alternate Picking Etude, I think this is a fabulous lesson for a beginner because its just hard enough to give you skills, but not too hard as you cant manage it!

I have 3 lessons on the go at any one time, but it might be wise for you to work hard on only one or two for now.

I would recomnend doing all the 101 lessons if you want a solid foundation to work with! However it is entirely up to you where you want to go from here wink.gif

Everyone here has gone down a different journey of learning, so there is no exact science but I am a "child of GMC" so i can tell you how i started off.

1. Kris's Beginner lessons >

2. Kris's 101 Lesson Series, Inc Pentatonic 101 and Speed picking series etc (by now i have a basic but solid knowledge of Alternate picking, improvisation, phrasing and timeing).

3. Various Lessons from out other fab instructors !

I hope this helps a little! smile.gif

Thanks a lot for the help Matt (as usual),

Ill had a go at Gabriels alt pick lesson, but didnt finish now im going to get back to and yeah, NAIL IT!

And Matt why arent you a senior yet. I remember once during the summer i slightly threw a pun at you when you tried to become a senior but now i think its well deserved that you become one. You really put in a LOT of effort to help others and now you do have all the qualities of a senior.

I think I see your problem. It is really an easy thing to fix...don't rush. Take the smallest bite of a lesson you can, and master it. After that, and only after that...move on. If you continue to plow through the lessons, and not completely grasp/master them...it is only going to set you back...not forward. I may be coming accross as rude on this, but I can say it...I had the same problem. Yes, there are many great things to learn on GMC. IMO...learn them slow and learn them well. The benefit of slow can sometimes outweigh the "coolness" of speed. Guitar playing is like any other thing we try to do...and be good at it. You are only going to get out of it, what you put into it.
I hope this helps. The best of luck to you.
ps I still have to FORCE myself to slow down! biggrin.gif

Thanks a lot guys. Ive now got it clear. I need to focus on one lesson at a time. Its just that with so many lessons on GMC you cant help but juggle around with them (im sure many people have this problem also).

Dont worry about the beginner lessons (theyre supposed to make you a bit more confident in your practicing and playing). Work on thw 1-0-1 and other lessons on the site. I may be confused but there are some lessons that really increased my speed. They were:
-Kris's speedpicking
-Pavels alternate picking series
-Pavels ionian scale lesson
-Pavels Legato series
-Pavels sweep picking series

Id suggest you go through these lessons in the order mentioned above as theyre essential. While youre at it take a look a Kris's pentatonic lessons. Once youve done those you can work on other lessons on GMC with a bit ease. Im yet for finish Pavels sweep picking and Kris pentatonic lessons.

Hi Besip,

Lessons where your learning things like improvisation, or new licks etc - are a little different to exercises where you learn an entire piece of music like say one of Gabriel’s Yngwie lessons just for example.

This is because on a “set piece” you can gauge the sound of your performance in its entirety against the instructors and see how you have progressed. You will know if you sound close to it, and have the right timing etc.

Of course a lesson like 101 improvisation, or beginner licks you cannot compare to the instructor. This is something you progress over time in. And you are also building your own style and improvisations along the way.

I would suggest perhaps take all the things you learn from the 101 lessons and improvise for at least 30-60 minutes a day. You can use this as your warm up!! Take the things you have learnt, and play along to backing tracks - there is a list Andrew has put up, but I would recommend the ones on www.freelicks.net

You can then for example, choose a piece by another instructor and work on this after your "warm-up". This is how I practice!

This is how I practiced for the first 6 months.

1.Warmup with improvisations to all the backing tracking on www.freelicks.net using the pentatonic scales and licks learnt from Kris. I also started to build my own licks straight after. You can have a lot of fun doing this.

Suggested daily time 30 – 60 minutes.

2. Move onto a structured lesson you ENJOY by one of our instructors. Its important to choose something you will have a lot of fun with because it keeps you playing.

I would always recommended using a metronome when starting out, be very firm with yourself on timing as this is what ultimately helps you become a flashy player.

After improvisation warm-ups, I spent say an hour doing alternate picking and an hour sweeping. But you must choose the styles YOU wish to play!

One last tip to keep motivated, listen to players you love daily. Youtube is great for keeping up motivation.

I hope this helps and isn’t too confusing.

Matt

As stated before, don't move on before you nail the lesson, if you feel it's possible. You may however find a lesson is harder than you thought, in that case find an easier lesson with the same technique, for instance, if there's a really hard speedpicking part in a solo lesson, take a break from it and do one of the more basic speedpicking exercises on the site.
I also found that 2 lessons at a time is a good number, you can switch back and forth between the two if you get tired of one.

Myself I don't really practice anything for the moment, I have a guitar teacher in real life that gives me plenty to work on (got scarified by paul gilbert at my last lesson, 3 weeks and I'm barely halfway). Also I just got into a band with some very complex songs that take up the rest of my free time, so right now I basically pay 10 dollars a month to browse the forums tongue.gif

It's still a great site though, and If I have to little to do elsewhere I'll pick up a lesson here and work on it.
