I've been wondering for a long time now, that what's the difference between economy picking and sweeping? I really liked to know.

And thanks for those who answer.

Economy picking is where you do alternate picking but don't change picking direction when you go between strings. Sweep picking is where you "sweep" through the strings only playing 1 note per string.

But is Lians Repetitive sweep picking same as economy picking then? Or does "sweeping through the strings" mean something else?

This is really good question!
As far as I see things,
economy is the same thing as 2 string sweeping,
everything above is only sweeping(3 strings,4 strings etc).
Note, economy is very often mixed with alternate picking,
you do economy just to connect notes on 2 different strings easily,
with less effort for your picking hand, that's why it's called economy.
On the other hand, when you run into sweeping section
you'll probably have few arpeggios to execute, without alternate,
just pure sweeping up and down.

I see. But here's a lesson that has more than 2 string economy.
But I understand what you are trying to say.

"The rule is to play alternate picking always except when playing two notes on adjacent strings.

Whenever this happens, we will use sweeping to continue the movement started. "

So that's what was said in the description of this lesson.

I'm pretty confused right now...

Yeah,Danilo uses to call that economy as well.
There is NOTHING wrong with that tho,
idea is to get things under your hands in order to play them
clean and accurate when needed,
name is just the name,it doesn't play for you. smile.gif

There is no point to confuse ourselves with different names for the same thing. Some people can call it that, some this, but in the end, sweeping and economy should be a similar ways of picking, involving keeping the same movement when changing strings. The precise limit where one ends and other begins is a bit subjective. In general, sweep picking is mostly used on arpeggios and economy with runs, but as I said, the limit is a bit blurred, because there are various ways that you can mix different picking techniques, and various ways that you can play notes.

Economy involves more than 1 note per single string while sweeping (overall) has one note per string only. The same motion happens in the right hand when changing direction keep using same pick stroke and go trough the strings like you were strumming chords.
