I am wondering what a good software package is for mastering final mixes. I just started using Reaper recently and I am wondering if I may need anything else to do a final mix. I used to use Roland VS1880 and it was all self contained in that you would mix all of your tracks and then send them to the mastering part of that machine for final mix. So, in Reaper do I just export a final mix to wav file and then up load that to a mastering software to add compression, effects, etc.? thanks! I think you can master directly in Reaper if you want to. Simply add the mastering effects on the master channel. If you want an all in one package I can warmly recommend Izotope Ozone. They have all the common mastering tools in one plugin plus some great guides on their web site. Waves also has some great plugins but if I'm not mistaken they're very expensive. Ozone is relatively cheap and you get all in one . Check them out at http://www.izotope.com /Marcus |

You can either run it in the master channel of reaper as Smurkas suggested or do it separately in something like WaveLab (which is great if you can afford it). Wavelab on its own won't do much for you, you need the effects as well such as Ozone. PSP Vintage Warmer is also a great one if you want a quick fix. In general, the received wisdom is that you should mix separately to mastering if you are making an album. Part of what you do when mastering is give all of your tracks a common feel so they sound like they all belong together, you need to work on all the tracks together to do that rather than master then individually as part of the mix. -------------------- Check out my Instructor profile
