Are there any draw backs to holding the pick with the thumb, index and middle finger ( steve morse type of thing ) ?
Middle finger has to go
chicken picking with middle finger is prety important technique sometimes
hmm ok so I should lose it ?
i vote lose it... that finger can keep you from having more control of the pick and it can be used for a other things... try it out for awhile and if you don't like it this way go back!

Do what's most comfortable, practice without the middle finger for a while though, get used to that, and then see witch style works better for your style of playing. Thier really are no rules, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=44-q_flFb-k holds the pick with his middle and index finger. I've also seen great guitarists hold the pick with only the thumb and middle finger.
So try both and if you find that they both work well, but for different things, you can alternate between picking styles.
I used to play like that, then I "found" the best way to hold the pick. As soon as I started playing with two fingers in the best position, it turned out great. My methods looks almost identical to the way Pavel holds his pick, and I swear by it! My progression has improved an insane amount due to my correct picking method, and picking was my absolute biggest obstical, above anything else I've learned so far. I used to use my arm when picking, and little wrist movement, but now that I hold my arm in the right position, my wrist movement is very fast. I would advise you to lose the middle finger, and look at the way Pavel holds the pick, it helped me a rediculous amount, now I can play alot of metallica, and my speed picking has gotten great because of it. Good luck.
Well ik eddie van halen picked with the middle finger and thumb, and i tryed that and thats a real pain in the ass. But now im so comfortable with the middle finger, index and thumb that ive developed my own ways to play fast and controlled its just so natural and switchin back to the thumb and index seems like taking a step back .
Thanks man always nice to hear what Rip_Dime has to say. I wasnt trying to ignore your last post I was just clarifying my methods and making sure it was uundestandable. Ive started to do a combination of both and its working well. Thanks Gmcerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrsssssss
